RECORDS FOR THE CENSUS CATALOGUE OF THE FLORA OF IRELAND IN THE HERBARIUM NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS, GLASNEVIN. M. J. P. Scannell and D. M. Synnott Herbarium, National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9 Occasional Papers No. 5 : pp 42. publication date 1990 INTRODUCTION Publication of vice-county records of vascular plants in Ireland was begun by Robert Lloyd Praeger in Irish Topographical Botany(Praeger 1901). Additions to that list were made in a number of subsequent publications by Praeger (see Scannell & Synnott 1987) and a census of the distribution in vice-counties of Irish vascular plants was included in The Botanist in Ireland (Praeger 1934). Following publication of the second edition of the Census Catalogue of the Flora of Ireland (Scannell & Synnott 1987) the sources for all the records made since 1934 were published (Scannell and Synnott 1989). Those sources included the herbarium of the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, from which many unpublished records were derived. Details of these herbarium records are published here. Inclusion of some pre-1934 records arises either because of taxonomic revision or because the specimens have been previously overlooked or disregarded. Only those records which were available at the time of preparation of the recent Census Catalogue (Scannell & Synnott 1987) have been included. Some records have since been published, mainly in the Irish Naturalist's Journal (Vol. 22 onwards). We are aware that the date of a specimen does not always indicate the first sighting of a taxon in a vice-county but consider a voucher specimen the most securely based. Where discrepancies between the list of sources (Scannell & Synnott 1989) and the present list of herbarium records occur, a comment or explanation is printed in brackets. Genera and species are in the same order as in the Census Catalogue and in the list of sources, locality, date of collection, collector's name (or initials of those frequently occurring) and 10km grid reference are given; habitat is included only in a few instances to clarify location. Acknowledgments. We are grateful to Ms. Grace Pasley who extracted the herbarium records and to Ms. Berni Shine who did the word-processing. Thanks are also due to Dr E.C.Nelson for assistance with proofreading. Ms. Susan Donohoe helped in various ways. The following have contributed to the list (initials as used in the list are given in brackets): Adams, J. Lambert, Miss D.S. Akeroyd, J.R. Levinge, H.C. (HCL) Bailey, Dr.-. Linton, E.F. Ball, Miss A. Long, M.

INTRODUCTION

Publication of vice-county records of vascular plants in Ireland was begun by Robert Lloyd Praeger in Irish Topographical Botany(Praeger 1901).
