Notes: Transported to England where he is fostered by the well-meaning Mrs Captain Betty Rose of God’s Force, Kaninda has one overriding aim — to return to his East African country and rejoin the Kibu soldiers in order to kill as many Yusulu as he can. It is the only way in which he can revenge the deaths of his parents and younger sister. But Kaninda is caught up in a gang war that spills over from the Estates into the school he now attends. He agrees to join in only as a means to killing the Yusulu boy new to his school, and to protect Laura, Mrs Rose’s daughter. It is a complicated scenario and very English in setting and plot though the depiction of civil war and the driving forces of greed and revenge are well explored.

Fiction.; Key stage 2-Humanities-Geography-Literature examining other culturesNotes: The mystery of an ancient coin, a family she doesn't know… Leah's search for

their secrets draws her across China - to the terror of Tiananmen Square.Complete and unabridged.Read by Melissa Eccleston.

Annotation: Leah's mother, Joan, is Chinese and her father was Scottish. For various reasons, most provoked by the death of both Joan's and Leah's father, Joan and Leah are in China trying to trace Joan's family and find the other half of an ancient coin left by Joan's father. The quest for the coin leads them to experience much of China in a time of turmoil and causes Leah to re-evaluate her relationship with Joan and her ethnic background. Leah sees for herself the

horror of Tiananmen Square and the book ends with the probability that her new found cousin, Ke, has died there.

Awards: 2007 Shortlist - NSW Premier's Award (Patricia Wrightson Prize) Annotation: Loku is a 'Responsible Boy', just like Lapun Papa (grandfather) when he was young says Loku's easygoing twin brother, Nul. Loku resents that his hard work is taken for granted and the straight jacket of 'responsibility' so he determines to have an adventure of his own. Unfortunately he chooses to light a fire which burns out of control and the punishment for his recklessness might result in harm to his tribe's totem and in his death.A short, rich story about a boy's sudden growth to manhood that reads like a modernised cautionary tale illustrated with dramatic stylized black and white drawings.

Notes: Reading age 8 to 12

A gentle send up of the current obsession with the notion of self-improvement.Kylie is teaching her brother Ash Limpid to rumba when she discovers he has a roll of fat, a 'muffin top'. Their mother is inspired by this to broaden her usual newspaper writing (the pet column) to a makeover feature with the Limpid family as the subject. There are dodgy 'before' photographs, a week at the Natural Spirtual Health and Wellness Centre ('Subtle,' said Dad), and the shiny 'after' photographs. The obese owner of NSHWC eats bacon and egg rolls out of sight of the wheat grass drinking clients and much fun is had writing about farting in yoga and drumming in teepees.Ash, of course, comes to realise he isn't fat at all and looks just fine but this notion of accepting oneself is shouldered aside by a general impression of fakery and dishonesty—the media, photographs, labels (there is considerable mention of brands) and health 'farms'. It all leaves an unpleasant taste, a bit like tofu pasta sauce.

Main subject: War storiesSubjects: Tanglin top tens-Year 8-War stories.; Soldiers-Fiction.; Africa-Politics and

government-Fiction.; Key stage 3-English-Year 8 reading list-Fiction; Key stage 2-Humanities-Geography-Literature examining other cultures

Notes: The imaginary country of Nagala, in which this story takes place stands, for all those African states plagued by corruption and civil war.AK begins with peace declared and a shared government announced. Paul, an orphan and warrior, knows no other life than war, no other loyalty than to his group and his adoptive father, Michael. He survives by good bushcraft and good soldiering; his most treasured possession an old AK rifle, and he is not going to lose that in the amnesty. But he will go to school as Michael wishes,When Paul learns that Michael, a minister in the new government, is a victim of an army coup, he and his friends escape from school just ahead of the army searching for him.The pace lifts as the young people cover vast tracts of inhospitable country, recover Paul’s AK and deliver the youngest into safe keeping before Paul and Jilli smuggle themselves into the city. There they become involved in a revolt against the gangs who rule the shanties on the outskirts of the town; at the same time Paul continues his crusade to find and save Michael.Dickinson offers two endings - a warm, feel-good one and, sadly, perhaps the more realistic one of continuing conflict and death.

Matthew is seriously fat, a target of bullies but a wonder at working out the most food you can buy at the school tuckshop. His services are much in demand at lunchtime. However, when he faints at sport the doctor is worried that his obesity may have already caused him to develop class 2 diabetes. Mum really takes notice and cuts back on her work hours in order to spend time with her son, cooking healthy food and exercising with him. And it turns out quite a few of the kids at school are on his side as well in his battle to lose weight. Especially Kayla, who has never worried about his size anyway.

Humanities-Geography-Literature examining other culturesNotes: Right from the start, Elvis refused to be ignored. He pushed his way into our lives

and made himself part of our family. Sometimes I think he was even more important than the rest of us. When a foal becomes part of Matt’s family, the trouble really begins. This is a tale of one boy’s determination, a family’s struggle to stay together, and a foal that touches their lives.Unabridged Australian audio.Contents are barcoded - Cover E003534; CD 1 E003535; CD 2 E003536; CD 3 E003537.

Awards: 2005 Honour Book - CBC Book of the Year Younger Readers Annotation: Life is not going well in Matt's house. His hardworking mother, Mary, has just about reached the end of her patience with her layabout husband, Ray. Nick, Matt's older brother is sullen and sister Jaz seems to be running wild. The house sits surrounded by junk and Ray's half-hearted projects. Everything is filthy and nothing works. Then the old mare, abandoned in a paddock, dies giving birth to a foal. Matt mourns the horse he had tried to help but is thrilled to have a foal. The ensuing troubles with Elvis are a provocation for family breakdown and, eventually some healing and reassessment. It is an interesting picture of the family, especially the connections between the children. The house and its surroundings are portrayed vividly and the grind of caring for Elvis entirely convincing. The characterisation of Ray and Mary doesn't work because the author pulls back from what would be a realistic outcome in a book for another readership. Ray turns his life around suspiciously easily, and quickly, when Mary and Jaz leave and the final happy feasting scene fits ill with the rest of the book.Nevertheless young readers will remember Matt's passion and struggles, the heart of the book.

Australia but she is happy enough to get on with things as long as she is left alone to study and enjoy her new found love of swimming. But when she eats a yam cake, part of an offering during the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts, the angry ghost Pei enters her life and changes everything.Until Pei came along, Sarah was impatient with ‘stupid Chinese superstitions’. Indeed, as the narrator of this story she is subdued and almost pendantic, reflecting her matter-of-fact and orderly character. That she is the one with ‘Yin eyes’ who can see and talk to ghosts is enjoyably ironic.A mix of curiousity, kindness and a sense of duty compels Sarah to help Pei, killed when young after journeying to Australia in the 1850s, and boiling with hurt and anger at being, she thinks, duped by her great love, Heng.

Henni starts out having the holiday of her life, with some of her delightful

neighbours from Stella Street, in a fantastic wooden house in the dunes behind a remote, perfect bay beach. But when Tara comes the mood changes dramatically.Tara is the same age as Henni, but everyone thinks she is much older. Tara's parents are breaking up and Donna, Henni's mentor and neighbour, asks her to have Tara for the holiday as a favour. Henni has already been asked to keep an eye on the other children when her parents leave the holiday house to return to work, and responsibility starts to weigh heavily. This is arguably Honey's best novel—a subtle examination of the crossing from childhood to another stage of awareness and expectation—adolescence. It is the sort of novel that will stay in the minds of some readers forever. Reading age 10 to 14

Key stage 2-Humanities-Geography-Literature examining other culturesNotes: Summary: A picture book adaptation of the novel of the same name about a

young girl's struggle to be accepted by her grandfather as the leader of her people.

Annotation: Witi Ihimaera’s novel The Whale Rider (1987) achieved world-wide recognition after being filmed as Whalerider in 2002 (directed by Niki Caro). This picture book (published in 2005) takes the process a step further. It follows the general narrative structure of the film version, with Koro Apirana rejecting his granddaughter, Kahu, because he seeks a male to inherit the mantle of leadership passed down in the male line from Paikea, the original whale rider. Kahu’s struggle for acceptance, her achievements, and the climactic arrival of the whales at Whangara are all presented in word and picture. Some parts of the tale are expanded, such as the role of the original Paikea (with the interesting addition of his last magic spear), and the motivation of the whales. Other parts are left out: for example, Kahu’s father, Porourangi, never reappears after Kahu’s birth. This is a fresh, and relatively simple, retelling of the filmed story, which will act as both a guide to the film, and an invitation to older readers to dive into the full novel version of The Whale Rider. It is also a satisfying illustrated story and picture book in its own right. Bruce Potter’s magnificent colour illustrations capture the mood of some of the key scenes of the film, as well as the original novel. He has wisely used faces quite different from the actors.

Notes: Annotation: A lyrical tale of a young girl’s thoughts of home as she and other refugees from Afghanistan sail ‘across an endless sea’ (and perhaps towards Australia?).The water and wind remind young Ziba of cool mountain air and collecting water from a stream back in Afghanistan, smells of food remind her of helping in the kitchen, the lurching of their boat of her mother weaving. She remembers her father, but he is not on the boat. Reference is made to her not being able to go to school. As the boat approaches land Ziba dreams of the warm welcome ahead. This might be read as ironical by older readers but for the younger reader it will seem logical.Ingpen’s illustrations enhance the poetical tone of the text. Even those of the ship in a stormy sea evoke calm. With so much room for intrepretation this picture book will suit a wide age range.

In five short stories we see the intricate relationships established or being established between characters, how small changes require further renegotiations and share in the pleasure of the village inhabitants when things turn out well.

culturesNotes: A rewarding read with more themes than can be included here. A young

(unnamed) Aboriginal boy shares his fears and hurts in this entertaining and moving book. Bullied at school, half in love with a migaloo jalbu (white girl) and tired of the fighting at home, to the point where he says he 'wonders what's the point of living', the culture of the past becomes a support in present-day confusion where drink is causing his people to 'drown inside'. The boy believes a green frog, a girragundji, is sent to him by the old people to protect his spirit and he puts aside fears, grows in confidence and sees opportunities where before there was only despair. Illustrated with photographs throughout, sometimes as background to text creating varied visual interest.

Awards: 2005 Honour Book - CBC Book of the Year Younger Readers Annotation: At the end of the preceding book, Captain Mack, Daniel was responsible for the expulsion of two bullies from his school, in the process acquiring a place in the mythology of the school community. His ill-fated attempt to help the old soldier, Captain Mack, escape from the nursing home has made him reflect on the nature of responsibility and bravery. The Victoria Cross that Captain Mack gives him is the catalyst for both Daniel standing up to the bullies and for this, the following book. In Billy Mack's War, Daniel returns the Victoria Cross to Captain Mack's son, William. William, recognising Daniel's real affection for his father, tells the boy of his own childhood experiences when his father returned home from a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Burma. The book encompasses many themes-often only lightly touched upon-that meld history with much of humanity's strengths and weaknesses into a gripping, thoughtful narrative.

The story moves between the present day where an unexpected friendship develops between Danny and Captain Mack's son, William, as the older man explains to Daniel what it was like growing up as Fred McAuliffe's son in a small Tasmanian farming community. Thus there are two strands to the narrative: Daniel's story in the present and William MacAuliffe's memories of when his father came home after the war. The two stories are differentiated by a change in type style; both stories are narrated in the present tense giving a sense of immediacy to both. The narrative moves easily from one time to another providing a comparison between the two boys-Daniel and the young William (Billy) McAuliffe-at much the same age. Reading age 10 to 13

Max Quigley isn’t exactly a bully, he is just incredibly confident and remarkably selfish. From Max's viewpoint if something, usually a bad something, happens then it is always the fault of someone else. And if someone gets picked on; well that is their fault too for being weird.Triffin Nordstrom for example has a weird name and is a nerd so deserves to be called ‘Nerdstrom’ and tricked into missing the bus home from an excursion. Triffin’s mum however sees the huge gap between Triffin and Max as an opportunity. No worse punishment could be concocted for Max then spending time with Triffin. As well as being coached in mathematics; a by-product is that Max is inducted into the, until now, foreign state of empathy.Aspects of bullying are evident in the characterisation of Max’s older brother Cameron and Max’s friend Jared. Other minor characters like Katie, the girl who always has to have the last word, and little Casey a bad boy in the making are obviously the product of close association with children and observance of behaviour.Marvellous comic writing that is also subtle in depicting the shades of boyish relationships.

Notes: A witty, good natured sports novel with a family and school setting that acknowledges the complexities of ethnic diversity in Australia.Lan groans when his school principal announces plans for the annual Multicultural Day. He hates it because it makes him feel different and he is no good at traditional Vietnamese dances in any case! When he is trapped into coming up with an alternative Lan decides to create a school cricket team which, in a clever, ironical twist, he calls 'the Nips' as it consists mostly of Asians together with a boy from El Salvador and one Italian.Lan is dogged in pursuit of his aim and his good-heartedness attracts help, the most useful from an old man, Spinner McGinty, who had played for Australia. When the NIPS do get to play they show, newcomers all, the true spirit of sportsmanship. This is very much about people—'anglos' and 'ethnics'—changing their views and thereby creating a situation where everyone wins through new experiences and friendships.

Notes: Lan and his team of Asian-Australian players are invited by the Australian Cricket Board to the Harmony Cup, a cricket tournament intended to encourage young non-Anglo Australians to play cricket. Lan, of course, is thrilled. A special invitation and a tour to Melbourne! The others are somewhat less excited, and a problem arises when star player David Ho breaks his arm, but the clever strategy of announcing his need for an Asian replacement player on sports radio gains them Sam, a fine Chinese-Australian cricketer.Lan feels there is something a bit different about Sam and, sure enough, suspicious Izzy discovers Sam is a girl on the eve of their big game for the tournament cup. Once again Lan has a dilemma to solve and the resolution is an acknowledgement of his good sense and honesty.Dull to start, the humour and excitement builds once the team is on their way to Melbourne.Sequel to NIPS XI.

Notes: Tennis became important in the Heath Family's life early on - the twins were only nine, and the others younger when they started to play. But their grandfather and father before them had been top players - the four red-headed children had tennis in their blood. They join the competitive tournament circuit and battle hard to win! An absorbing story from an enormously popular children's author - and Noel Streatfeild's favourite book.

A visit from the Taliban searching for young boys to join their army, and the resulting death of his father as he hides his son, prompts his mother and uncle to raise enough money to send Ali out of the country to safety. Whilst they may have thought Ali was going to Germany, he ends up on a leaking boat bound for

Australia. Ali is bright boy, frightened, missing his family and putting his faith in a future in which he can make enough money to sponsor his family to join him. Instead he ends up in Woomera where hope is at a premium. Even though he is given a chance to school in Adelaide he breaks the conditions of his temporary status to see his only friend off at the airport and is sent back to Woomera. There is little hope in this book.

grandparents in a Thai village, enjoying life but always wondering where her mother is and what she is doing. Her grandmother is always on the edge of anger; her grandfather a constant support. Then comes the day when a car arrives and the three of them travel to where her mother lies dying of an incurable disease. It is a time of great sadness and it is followed, after her mother's death, by Kati travelling to the city with her mother's oldest friends where she is presented with 'treasures' her mother has gathered for her—mementos of her and Kati's lives that emphasis the depth of her love for Kati and explain why she had to send her only child away to be cared for by her grandparents.
