The Barrett Centre is not closing at the end of next month.

The local HHS has been asked to review the current Barrett Centre in light of a number of concerns the Minister has with regard to the inappropriate mixture of adult and adolescent patients as well as a backlog in critical infrastructure upgrades and maintenance the Government has inherited at the existing facility.

No decision has been made to close the centre, and recently reported media comments to that effect are erroneous.

The Minister's primary concern is to see continuity of CMe for patients in a safe and secure environment. The Minister will take on Board the recommendations of both the local HHS as well as a newly formed Mental Health Commission about the future of this centre when they report to the Minister.

Until that time, the local HHS is endeavouring to contact patients as well as their relatives to allay any concerns.

I am writing to express my concern at the ongoing, short sighted funding cuts currently being undertaken by the LNP. Every day since the LNP has taken over the reins of our state I see the impacts on the children and their families who I work with. Lisa, have you noticed the amount of young people walking around this area during school hours? YOLI might want to find out how many young people have spent time in adult mental health inpatient units in Queensland and your electorate. You may wish to find out how the extreme trauma that young people who have been supported by the expert team at the Barrett Centre will be addressed with its closure next month? You may wish to find out about the increase in referrals to youth shelters,youth support agencies, Department of Child Safety, early intervention services and child mental health services in Queensland and in your electorate in particular and the current level of resources and funding placed in these areas. Have you spoken to people working on the ground, the so called 'front line', have you heard what they say is really happening for the chidren in this area and in Queensland? If you knew these things then I know as my local member you would not be supporting funding cuts, job losses etc in these areas as I know that you will see the subsequent costs down the track in hospital emergency departments and the courts/prison systems, social and economic impacts of increases in Domestic violence, crime, educational disengagement, underemployment and poverty for those who are not living to their full potential. Children do not vote but they are the future contributors to the economic and social wellbeing of this state. Yours sincerely Alison Palmer
