    WELCOME

    March 2010

I am delighted to welcome you to our annual Religious Education Congress. Thisextraordinary event affords us an opportunity to renew our commitment to pass on thewonderful richness of our Catholic faith: our beliefs, rituals and spiritual traditions.

The theme selected for Congress 2010 draws us into the story of Gods IncredibleAbundance overflowing in love and compassion and echoed down through the centu-ries. To the exiles it is a promise of restoration, reminder of a life-giving Spirit, and inJesus it is a celebration of the wonder and power of a God who revives and revitalizes.I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).

I am very pleased that so many of you take the time to be renewed and enriched by themany excellent workshops, keynotes, liturgical celebrations and opportunities to con-nect which are offered throughout the weekend. Your leadership and faithful participa-tion is admirable especially in these challenging times. You are gift and blessing to our

parish communities of faith. Please be assured of my ongoing support and encouragement as you so generouslyshare the Good News of our Catholic story and tradition.

Asking Gods blessing on you, your families and your parish communities,

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

His Eminence,Cardinal Roger MahonyArchbishop of Los Angeles

    March 2010

It is always a joy to welcome you to yet another wonderful Congress. The weekend offersmany opportunities to gather reflect and recommit to proclaiming the richness of our SacredStory.

Our theme, Incredible Abundance , inspired by the Scripture readings of the fifth Sundayof Lent, speaks of Gods gracious abundance flowing out in acts of love and mercy. In Jesusthe forces of death and despair are overcome, stones and grit that block the stream of life areremoved and new life emerges. Embracing this incredible abundance we believe that it is nevertoo late for God to invigorate and renew a person, a church, a world.

As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdio-cese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education,Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to

pursue a masters degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2009 Congress Saturdaynight liturgies added $40,207 to this fund. We also thank those who made a special contribution tothe endowment with their online registration.

We are blessed by the variety of offerings, inspiring liturgical celebrations, entertainment andmulticultural expressions provided. You are encouraged to walk the labyrinth, participate inthe Sacrament of Reconciliation or spend quiet moments in our contemplative Sacred Space.Mindful of our common responsibility to care for the earth and all of Gods creation, ourGreen Space will provide resources and opportunities to exchange ideas and join efforts inthis most important enterprise.

Thank you again for your presence, your faithful participation and for the hope that you sogenerously share with your communities of faith. I look forward to greeting you throughoutthese days of Incredible Abundance.

    Sincerely,

    Sister Edith Prendergast, RSCArchdiocesan Director
