Such amoebae evolved convergently in many eukaryotic groups (mostly Amoebozoa and Rhizaria) and are often closely related to major parasite groups of economic importance. Yet they remain very poorly understood. For the majority of described species, molecular data are still missing, and few lineages have been studied morphologically or ecologically. As part of NERC-funded projects, David Bass and I explored the molecular, ecological, and morphological diversity of these amoebae, including Vampyrellida (top left box) and Variosea (top right box). Using lineage-specific 18S primers, we explored hidden diversity within Ascetosporean parasites (bottom left box). We also investigated rhizarian lineages known only from environmental data and could characterise some of them morphologically. We used a combined 18S-28S dataset to resolve deep relationships within Rhizaria (bottom right box).
