he first Smartpones were patented in 1973, and officially came onto the market in the

early 1990s. Initially a smartphone was classified by features such as e-mail capability,

internet access, QWERTY keyboards, personal digital assistant functions and in some

cases a built-in camera. Today we typically classify smartphones as having a high

definition touchscreen, multiple apps, tools for navigation and internet access on the go.

Sales of smartphones have exceeded traditional feature phones as smartphone usage has

continued to rise.

This forecast shows the anticipated number of smartphone users in the U.S. from 2014 to 2018, based on figures from 2010 to 2013. The source estimates that there will be more than 196 million smartphone users in the U.S. by the year 2016.

Smartphone market information

Advances in telecommunication technology have been significant in recent years. These advances have meant that the population has a level of connectedness never seen before. The number of smartphone users in the U.S. has been rising steadily for some years now and forecasts estimate that smartphone penetration in North America

will also continue to rise steadily into the future. The United States is one of the leading countries in the world with respect to adoption of smartphone technology.

In America the most popular brands are Samsung and Apple, with respect to handset manufacturers, while the most popular smartphone operating systems / platforms with respect to market share are none other than Google Android and Apple’s own operating system, iOS. Other operating systems, such as Symbian, Blackberry OS, Bada and Windows have struggled to maintain a foothold in the market as iOS and Android clearly dominate the field.

Wearables.Consumers are using wearables to track and monitor physical activity and sleep habits as well as enhance their everyday experiences.

For the outdoor enthusiast interested in health and fitness, wearables are redefining their lifestyles by encouraging them to challenge their own capabilities.

Wearable technology is a growing industry with over 10 billion devices currently available and expected to grow to 50 billion devices by 2020, making it a $1.9 trillion dollar industry!

Overall opinions are mixed regarding wearable technology. Skepticism and confusion can be expected this early in the game when most consumers have yet to grasp the full benefits and potential applications. This survey is not specific to outdoor enthusiasts where sales are typically greater because of health and wellness applications.

A practical promotional item will increase

marketing impact over an extended period

of time. A common dilemma however, is

deciding what item will be most effective

and offer the most exposure.

Many promotional products are distributed

at various events – a key chain, the popular

Using a patent-pending thermoelectric technology, BioLite Stoves convert heat to electricity that powers a fan to make the fire ultra-efficient. Extra electricity can be used to charge small electronics like mobile phones and LED lights.

Under her leadership, PackIt’s patented technology has expanded from lunch totes into a line of food and drink solutions spanning wine, baby, picnic, and shopping bags that are sold in more than 40 countries internationally. PackIt enjoyed astounding growth in 2014, expanding distribution to 40 countries worldwide and remaining a top-seller at major retailers and independents alike. The company launched new portable food accessories in Q1, building upon its current success in the lunch and wine sectors.

PackIt also partnered with acclaimed design brand French Bull on licensed patterns that have been a hit with both consumers and customers.

In August, PackIt was named #28 on the prestigious Inc. 500 ranking

of the fastest-growing U.S. small businesses, as well as the #1 fastest-growing woman-owned company on the list. The announcement kicked off a

whirlwind of press: PackIt made appearances on CNBC’s Squawk

In early 2015, PackIt will debut two new shoulder bags and a deluxe-sized lunch bag. The designs allow for hands-free carrying, cater to active lifestyles and meet the demand for PackIt’s proprietary freezable technology in stylish silhouettes.

PackIt was founded by Melissa Kieling, a single mom of three, when she noticed that no single kids lunch bag could keep her children’s lunches cool and safe until lunchtime. She’d have to stick toxic freezable gel packs in their lunch boxes, which inevitably got lost, or used wasteful plastic baggies of ice that always leaked.

Taking matters into her own hands, Melissa researched and patented the idea for a lunch bag that had freezable gel built into its lining. In 2009, she launched the PackIt Personal Cooler, the first foldable, freezable bag that keeps food and drinks cool on the go for up to 10 hours—no ice packs needed.

The LuminAID solar light was designed to

fulfill the basic need for light in post-natural disaster situations shortly after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti. When founders Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta were thinking about what they could design to make a difference, they decided to focus an affordable, renewable light because it had the potential to greatly improve the comfort, safety, and survival of disaster victims.

Having experienced first-hand how a disaster can negatively impact the lives of millions, they were motivated to make the LuminAID light a reality for those affected by disasters, crises, and conflict.
