Welcome to the first online

edition of REBEAT! magazine.

We’ve created a new digital

platform for Southampton based vintage

store, Beatnik Emporium.

You will find a mix of vintage culture,

combining the latest vintage inspired

runway looks with Beatnik’s own

products. One of my personal favourite

trends of spring 2016 is 40s military style,

which you can find in store and on the

shop online.

Explore the world of mod from music

to fashion. Also Blogger, Paige Joanna,

gives an insight into mixing vintage

fashion with modern trends. Let us

transform your vintage style into

something special.

Mod was more than a fashion statement; it was

a lifestyle. The youth of the 60s left behind the

old 50s Britain for a new look. They created

their own style that made them feel unique and

modern. Mod affected everything from fashion to music. It

also influenced where they went and how they got there.

The term mod came from a youth movement of well dressed,

fashion conscious men who listened to ‘modern jazz’. They

called themselves ‘modernists’, later known as ‘mod’. Jazz

was great, but the youth needed something they could

dance to. This lead to the rise of soul and RnB on the mod

scene.

Style was influenced by 50s America, and mixed with Italian

and Spanish fashion. The mod teens wanted to move

away from traditional British style. An example of this is

the ‘demob’ suit. It was baggy. It only came in grey. It was

something their parents would wear. Instead, the mods had

their suits fitted with shorter lapels.

MUSIC DURING THE MOD ERA

During the 60s, the mod subculture was associated with

Soul, Ska and RnB music. It perfectly matched the

era’s sleek and edgy style. Before the mods became

exceedingly popular they had developed an interest in

Jazz and Blues from the time spent in various coffee bars around

London. As the mods communities grew, the music genres

associated with them became broader. Their love of blues led

them towards RnB. While the rockers community subsided, more

people were drawn to the mod culture. They began connecting

with Rock n Roll bands. The Who and The Kinks became some of

the most influential bands of all time.

Big Britpop bands, Oasis and Blur took influence from what the

artists and bands curated in the 60s mod era. They replicated

similar tones to their own modern music. Even in the noughties,

the mods were still having a significant influence on emerging

rock and indie music. Bands and artists, Miles Kane, Jake Bugg

and The Arctic Monkeys have become highly successful. Today

people are still enjoying and reminiscing over the sounds of the

rebellious era.

More recently, there has been a comeback of

vinyl. It was one of the most popular ways to play

music back in the 60s. With the revival of bands

and artists like Noel Gallagher and mod trends in

fashion, no wonder the love of vinyl has increased.

Sometimes it’s better to be a little nostalgic instead

of immersing ourselves into the mainstream.

“The magic that music creates can be lost in

the digital world.”

People are starting to appreciate the authenticity

a record holds. It’s something you can cherish and

physically touch. An old fashioned way to play music.

It holds a more important place in someone’s heart

than a simple download. The magic that music

creates can be lost in the digital world. Placing a

record on a turntable makes it more real for the

listener. It gives them a stronger connection with

the music, rather than pressing play on a piece of

advanced technology.

REMODIFY YOUR STYLE

During the mod era, women who had previously

been shunned by the male-dominant culture

began to create their own fashion status within

society. Carnaby Street in London was one of the

first shopping destinations to introduce fashion boutiques,

catering primarily to teenage girls and young women. After

the rise in these boutiques, the fashion started to spread

rapidly. Then, female mod fashion started to emerge

especially in clubs and on the streets in day to day life.

Hemlines were gradually shortened and the mini skirt was

born. The mini skirt became an iconic piece in London,

popular among female mod fashionistas within young

fashion culture. Flat shoes were seen in Vogue, as were

trousers which weren’t as common with women at the time.

Whilst trying to achieve the look of Twiggy, girls

complimented the mini skirt with short and neat

haircuts, natural makeup paired with false eyelashes.

This was unlike the male influences of the era who

adorned with black eye shadow, eye pencil and

lipstick.

Social trends dictate fashion and in the 40s this couldn’t

be more evident. The outbreak of war in Britain caused

lifestyles to suddenly change. Men were sent away to fight

for their country while women stepped up to help out on

the home front. Elongated gowns of the 30s faded out of

fashion and were replaced by suited jackets.

1940’s MILITARY

40s trends for women contain elements of gingham, utility

and bolero jackets. Tory Burch’s collection features a

perfect, buttoned jacket with wide shoulders mimicking this

era. For men, 40s vintage trends included oversized jackets

with uniform badges in tan, khaki and black. Alexander

Wang and Balmain’s SS16 menswear campaigns focused

on this uniform trend. Go against the rules of bright spring/

summer colours.

REBEAT! ON THE STREETWe list the best street style looks for the new season

WORDS BY CECILIA KOHLMYRART DIRECTOR

New season – new trends. Mod, 90s denim and military

styles are back in fashion this spring. REBEAT!

went on a Southampton street style venture to find

the best looks of the season. These are the most

inspirational, quirky and fun looks for ss16 that you’ll have to try.

HATS Hats have been popular for quite some time and they’re

not going away. Fedoras, bowlers and bucket hats are super

trendy this spring. The bowler is a timeless accessory. It

can give a fun vibe to everyday outfits. (And hides a bad

hair day perfectly – thank heavens!) A perfect addition to a

casual outfit.

MIX OLD AND NEW WITH PAIGE JOANNA

Get inspired to fuse vintage fashion with modern trends

A petite girl with a passion for all things sentimental, Paige Joanna

tells us how to get her vintage look!

Paige takes inspiration from her style icons, Kate Bush and Hayley

Williams. She mixes an iconic red lip with whimsical hair to get the vintage

look. Originally from Portsmouth, the 24-year-old moved to London to

pursue her dream job in the fashion industry.

Now blogging for four years, her YouTube channel has received over

58,000 views across all of her videos. As well as blogging, she enjoys

making DIY’s and has over 25k followers on Pinterest alone.

What do you love about your idols?I love Kate for her whimsical hair, floaty dresses and matching

suits. Hayley is like the punk rocker I always wanted to be; I feel if

you mix them together you would get my ideal style.

Do they inspire your look?I definitely share elements of their styles but I don’t directly copy

them. I feel like combining vintage styling with modern trends is

the best way to gain a girly and preppy look.

Any style tips for our readers? For a vintage look it really depends what people are comfortable

with. A plaid jacket is a vintage essential. Red lipstick, floral prints

and knitwear can work really well.

"It’s great to buy vintage fashion when on a budget. You could spend little money and be the only one wearing something like it."
