Greenvi l l e , Rockford, Ceda r Spr ings , and Coopersv i l le cha lk-e d up v ic to r i e s for f i r s t p lace in the T r i - R i v e r Conference F r i -d a y night in the l eague ' s f i r s t year a s an 8 - t e a m c i rcu i t . Greenvi l le and Coopersv i l le a r e new to the con fe rence this year .
The Greenvi l le club blanked Lowel l 53-0 in the mos t s u r p r i s -ing development of the night. Rockford edged Spar ta 7 -2 ; C e -d a r Spr ings ro l led ove r Belding 12-0 at Ceda r Springs; and Coop-e r s v i l l e downed Comstock Pa rk 6 - 0 at Coopars iv l le .

Newaygo elected to rece ive and Steve Cole s t a r t ed out the Kent Ci ty N.C.A.^A. football s e a -son with a 35-yard kickoff. The Lions at tempted to sco re but were unsuccessfu l a f t e r four downs of play.
Kent City rece ived the punt and c a r r i e d to the 23-ya rd l ine. Runs by Dennis E m m o n s and Randy Mar tens , plus a p a s s to John Coronado brought the ball to the one -ya rd l ine . DaveCarew pushed the ball a c r o s s for the only Eagle touchdown. The ex t ra point conversion by Scott Ander-son put the Eag les ahead 7-0 ,
Newaygo came back in the s e c -ond q u a r t e r to s c o r e and the con-vers ion tied the s c o r e 7 -7 ,
Late in the thi rd q u a r t e r , the L ions scored on a 2 - y a r d plunge. The victory went to the Lions with a s c o r e of 13-7,

The two touchdowns made by Kent City were f r o m L a r r y Thompson and Mor tensen , With the help of Coach Gary Woodhull and Coach Rich Allington, the E a g l e s a r e hoping fo r a vic tory o v e r White Cloud at "7:30 on Thu r sday evening.
Kenowa Knights Defeated by Zeeland 26-7
F o u r second-half touchdowns r a l l i ed Zeeland to a 26-7 win ove r Kenowa Hills F r i d a y night in Ottawa-Kent Blue Division a c -t ion.
The Kenowa Knights dominated the f i r s t half action and appeared c lo se to an upse t . They picked up 98 ya rds total of fense in the f i r s t two q u a r t e r s and seven f i r s t downs to Zee land ' s to ta ls of 45 and ^
After a s c o r e l e s s f i r s t qua r t e r , Kenowa, aided by a penalty, m a r c h e d 60 ya rds e a r l y in the second per iod fo r i ts only touch-down. Halfback Mark Warber found the end zone on an 8 -yard run around right end.
Zeeland, picked by league coa-c h e s as the team to beat th is fall , s t a r t e d displaying some offen-s ive power when it s co red twice within a minute and a half to sew up the contest e a r l y in the th i rd q u a r t e r . Zeeland scored on a 49 -ya rd march on Doug B a r e n s e ' s one-ya rd dive.
On Kenowa Hil ls ' next s e r i e s of downs, punter Warber was tackled on his own 30 a f te r a low p a s s f rom c e n t e r . Qua r t e r back Dirk Schrotenboer of Zee-land faded to p a s s on the f i r s t p lay, but a f t e r finding his r ece iv -e r s covered, ran 29 ya rds around the lef t s ide to se t up B a r e n s e ' s second s c o r e fo r a 13-7 advan-tage.
Then, late in the thi rd qua r t e r , Zeeland got i ts third touch-down. Kenowa Hills gambled with a fake punt play at Zee land ' s 42 which backf i red . Zeeland took ove r and on the f i r s t play, Sch-ro tenboer f i r ed a long p a s s to junior end Mike Zy l s t r a who c a r -r ied the ball to the 4. Schro-tenboer scored two p lays l a t e r on a left end sweep to give the Chix a 20-6 lead.
B a r e n s e c r o s s e d the goal l ine fo r the third t ime with l e s s than a minute remaining f r o m two y a r d s out for a f inal 20-7 s c o r e , Schro tenboer completed six of 12 p a s s e s for 101 yards wliile Keno-w a ' s Randy Miller comple ted the s a m e number in 14 t r i e s fo r 45 y a r d s .

On September 3, the s tudents of Kent Cl ty -Casnovia High School were welcomed back by o u r new pr inc ipa l , Mr . C a r l o s F lo r ldo . To the s tuden t ' s a m a z e -men t , al l the doors and r e g i s t e r s had been repainted f r o m the f o r -m e r l y " u g l y " brown to a beau-t i fu l sof t g reen .
Throughout the f i r s t week, the c l a s s e s and clubs caused much d i s rup t ion as It was n e c e s s a r y f o r them to meet and se t t le all old and new bus ines s .
The Student Council me t t h ree t i m e s during the f i r s t week to c l e a r up many m a t t e r s that had caused much d i s sa t i s fac t ion a -mong the s tudents .
The f i r s t i tem of b u s i n e s s was tha t of amending o u r cons t i -tut ion. It now s t a t e s that qua l i -f i ca t ions f o r holding an of f ice within the council a r e that you a r e a m e m b e r of the council at the t ime of e lec t ions o r have s e r v e d one year on the council p r e v i o u s to the e lec t ion . second amendment now r e a d s that the Student Council will nominate according to the con-st i tut ion qual i f icat ions and the s tudent body will vote on those cand ida tes . These amendments wil l go into ef fect th is coming sp r ing .
The Council a lso decided that a l l c l a s s e s and clubs who wish to build f loats for Homecoming wil l be put into competi t ion. The P . T . C . will judge the f loa ts and no p r i ze will be o f fe red o ther than recognit ion.
On the day of Homecoming, the s ix th hour will be e l iminated and a p a r a d e with the f loats ; band, and queen candidates will take place . The chee r l eade r s will lead the s tudent body In a snake dance behind the parade . After all of the exci tement the student body wil l p roceed to the football f ield f o r the solemn ce remony of the burn ing of " G r a n t " . To top th i s off, we will win the football g a m e f r o m Grant High School!

The Spar ta r u n n e r s f in ished with the f i r s t eight p l aces with Godwin taking the 9th spot . With Gordy P r e s t o n res t ing his t i r ed legs , B r i a n Claxton paced the pack fol lowed by Badgerow, Taf t , Momber , and Anderson, the r e s u l t was a p e r f e c t s c o r e , 15-50.
Next week the Spar tans take on Coopersv i l l e and Greenv i l l e In league act ion. The Spa r t a r u n n e r s have a total of 16 m e e t s s ched-uled fo r the season .
