RT Ethernet Solutions for Field DevicesPortable Protocol Software

Softing’s portable protocol stacks for PROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus/TCP enhance any field devicewith an existing Ethernet interface with Real-Time (RT)Ethernet capabilities. The extremely flexible porting layer guarantees a rapidintegration of Softing’s high-performance solutionsinto any target device. The well-documented portinglayer is developed in ANSI-C to ensure compatibilitywith any target hardware. From a functional point ofview, the porting layer handles memory allocation, task and thread management, and access to the Ethernet peripheral. The flexible, yet high performancecapabilities of the porting layer have been demonstratedwith VxWorks, Linux, Windows, eCos, µC/OSII, andNetOS. A simple checklist serves as an easy tool toquickly estimate the implementation effort. The Simple-Device-Application-Interface (SDAI) is an ex-tremely efficient protocol abstraction layer that is designed to offer a single application interface for allRT Ethernet protocols, helping to significantly speed-up device integration and time-to-market, while simplifying support and maintenance. This design approach also effectively supports conformance tocommunication profiles, where necessary (safety, motion, etc.).

Benefits of Our Portable Offer

Time-to-MarketThe use of our portable protocol soft-ware effectively reduces the develop-ment effort to the time frame allocatedfor the hardware design.

ReliableToday, many device vendors already depend on Softing’s industry-hardenedprotocol stacks. At the same time, Softing is committed to continually im-proving its implementations.

EconomicalSignificantly reduces R&D costs in re-ference to protocol software develop-ment. Maintenance cost estimation is straightforward because the softwarelicense includes maintenance, updates, and upgrades.

RT Ethernet Solutions for Field DevicesFPGA-based Hardware Integration

The main advantage of FPGA technology is that itcombines flexible adaptation to specific application requirements with economical considerations. At thesame time, it offers protection of your intellectualproperty. FPGA technology enables device manufac-turers to enhance existing devices with additionalcommunication protocols. It also enables them to design new devices with a flexible communications interface based on a powerful, yet economical plat-form.Today, Softing offers protocol software forPROFINET IO, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus/TCP that is already optimized for various operating systems thatrun within Altera’s NIOS-II-Kernel.

Design Alternative 1:System-on-a-Chip – Altera Cyclone III

Softing’s RT Ethernet protocol software integratedwith the Altera Cyclone III FPGA represents the

most economical solution for high volumeproducts. This FPGA is a cost-effective, yet

high performance Ethernet controller that, together with Softing’s protocol stacks,

represents an ideal choice for designing a robust RT Ethernet device. In addition, Softing's

RT Ethernet stacks offer support for the integratedswitch-core of the FPGA, thus eliminating the need forexternal switching components.

and robotics Drive systems Industrial computers And more…

Design Alternative 2:RT Ethernet Communications ModuleField device manufacturers take pride in designingmodular products with built-in flexibility to support themultitude of communication protocols used in today’sautomation systems. One key element of a productdesign is the availability of a cost-effective communi-cation module.Softing’s RT Ethernet com-munication module is a completeboard-level solution that is an excel-lent alternative for use in low volumeproducts or when a device manufacturerdoes not have the necessary R&D bandwidthto design a demanding RT Ethernet interface. There are two benefits to this approach. The first isthat the device manufacturer will have a standardizedhardware and software interface that enables supportfor multiple RT Ethernet protocols. The second is thelow cost of such a module when compared againstthe full development costs of a proprietary communi-cation interface. Softing’s communication module design for field devices incorporates the advantagesoffered by Altera’s Cyclone III FPGA.

ConsultingSofting has extensive experience in developing devicesfor fieldbus systems on various hardware and operat-ing system platforms. Softing’s team of consultantscan provide a concept for integrating the RT Ethernetdevice stack and identify the necessary device require-ments.

SpecificationSofting can develop the product specification basedon the product requirements of the device manufac-turer. The product specification will define productfunctionality, application interfaces, hardware and soft-ware requirements, test scenarios, and other device-specific requirements.

Hardware DevelopmentSofting can design the RT Ethernet hardware based onFPGA technology. All new designs are based on field-proven schematics. On request, Softing can carry-outthe final hardware production in quantities.

Protocol Stack Porting/ImplementingSofting can port the RT Ethernet device stack to thecustomer-specific target hardware and operating system. Softing’s protocol software includes hardwareabstraction layers to allow quick integration into thetarget environment.

RT Ethernet Solutions for Field DevicesEngineering Services by Softing

ParameterizationSofting can develop a Device Description file (GSDMLor similar) that is used to parameterize a RT Ethernetdevice with the according configuration tool.

System TestSofting can commission the hardware and perform all initial testing. The next step of ensuring the inter-operability of the product with all major providers ofRT Ethernet components can be performed withinSofting’s extensive test lab.

CertificationSofting can execute all required certification tests priorto the actual product certification. Softing will workwith the appropriate certification labs to ensure thesuccessful completion of the certification process.

OEM ProductsSofting can develop and manufactures RT Ethernetproducts based on Softing-technology. All componentsof the RT Ethernet product can be placed into a customer specific/brand-labeled housing. The finishedgoods will be delivered to the device manufacturer for final sales.
