Match backgroundReal Madrid CF and Manchester United FC will square off in a much-anticipated last-16 showdown lent extra spiceby the presence of Old Trafford old boy Cristiano Ronaldo in the home ranks.

• The sight of Ronaldo facing United for the first time since his departure adds another layer of intrigue to a contestpairing clubs who have met in four previous European Cup ties – with the winners going on to lift the trophy on threeoccasions.

• It is also an opportunity for José Mourinho to renew his rivalry with Sir Alex Ferguson. Although United reached theround of 16 as Group H winners, Group D runners-up Madrid have won eight of their last nine UEFA ChampionsLeague home fixtures and can draw further encouragement from the fact United have conceded first in their last fiveEuropean outings and have won only twice in 20 visits to Spain.

Previous meetings• Madrid came out on top in three of the clubs' four previous encounters – in the semi-finals in 1956/57 and quarter-finalsin 1999/2000 and 2002/03 – with United prevailing in the 1967/68 semi-finals.

• Madrid triumphed 6-5 on aggregate in their most recent encounter. Vicente del Bosque's side emerged 3-1 winnersfrom the first leg at the Bernabéu, Luís Figo and Raúl González (2) scoring before Ruud van Nistelrooy pulled a goalback.

• The Brazilian Ronaldo struck a hat-trick in the Old Trafford return where United fought back to win 4-3 through twogoals from substitute David Beckham on a night when Van Nistelrooy and Iván Helguera (own goal) also found thenet.

• The lineups from that last meeting on 23 April 2003 were:Man Utd: Barthez, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Brown, Silvestre (P Neville 79), Verón (Beckham 63), Butt, Keane (Fortune82), Giggs, Van Nistelrooy, Solskjær.Madrid: Casillas, Salgado, Hierro, Helguera, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, McManaman (Portillo 69), Figo (Pavón 88),Makelele, Ronaldo (Solari 67), Guti.

• In the 1999/2000 quarter-finals, eventual champions Madrid advanced 3-2 on aggregate as they followed up agoalless home draw by taking a 3-0 lead in Manchester through Roy Keane's own goal and a Raúl double, beforeBeckham and Paul Scholes replied for the then holders. Ryan Giggs and Iker Casillas also featured.

• United have a history of comebacks in this fixture. After George Best had scored the only goal of their 1967/68semi-final first leg at Old Trafford, they trailed Madrid 3-1 at half-time in the return but goals by David Sadler and BillFoulkes earned a 4-3 aggregate victory and United went on to lift the trophy for the first time.

• Madrid won the first-ever meeting 5-3 on aggregate to reach the 1956/57 final. The Merengues overcame MattBusby's men 3-1 at home and then led 2-0 away before United battled back to 2-2.

Match background• Madrid have already got the better of United's neighbours in this season's group stage. Mourinho's side earned athrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Manchester City FC at home on matchday one, Ronaldo delivering the 90th-minutewinner, then drew 1-1 away.

• The Spanish champions' home record against England clubs is W6 D4 L2. The last English visitors to beat themwere Liverpool FC, 1-0 victors at this stage in 2008/09.

• United exited last term's UEFA Europa League after home and away defeats by Athletic Club, and also lost theirmost recent UEFA Champions League encounter with Liga opposition – 3-1 against FC Barcelona in the 2011 finalat Wembley.

• United's record away to Liga clubs is W2 D8 L10. Their last success came at Valencia CF in the 2010/11 UEFAChampions League group stage, Javier Hernández scoring the only goal.

• Madrid lost the 1981 European Champion Clubs' Cup final to Liverpool and the 1971 European Cup Winners' Cupfinal to Chelsea FC.

• United lost UEFA Champions League finals against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 having beaten the same opponentsin the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup final.

• Sir Alex oversaw Aberdeen FC's 2-1 defeat of Madrid in the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup final – his firstcontinental trophy.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FCBayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a sideprogressed after a home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finalswhen they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-leggedtie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two gamesalso featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFAChampions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 thatfeatured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holdersand lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 monthslater Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
