Liverpool FC v Manchester City

GOOD afternoon and welcome to Anfi eld for this afternoon’s game with Manchester City.

We go into the match on the back of an excellent win at Chelsea last Sunday. You always need to play well to win at Stamford Bridge and we were delighted with the attitude, commitment and effort of the 14 players that took part and all of them made a valuable contribution to the victory.

We made a couple of changes and the boys that came into the team did really well and then when we made a few changes towards the end, the younger lads were also excellent with their attitude and commitment. People may be dismissive and say that Andy Carroll was only on the pitch for a few minutes but, no matter, it’s the attitude that you come on with that’s solely important and each one of the players showed the

correct approach and that helped them get the result they did.

From the start of the season, every single player has worked hard and each of them has had a run-out in the games in some way, shape or form, whether it’s been a league match or a Carling Cup tie, so they are all playing their part. There will always be some that play more games than others but the way they have gone about their jobs has been excellent. We need to continue that and remember that we’ve got to where we have because they’ve all worked really hard and stuck together both on and off the pitch.

It is now over two months since we last lost at Spurs and we have been pleased with the

reaction since. Nobody would have been happy with the result or the performance that day but the response to it has been very good. We’ve just got on with things and received our rewards for the work we’ve done in every game since, so we need to continue in the same way.

Our next test is against Manchester City this afternoon and we are all looking forward to the game.

City have a fantastic array of players and are now a real force. They are the ones who are in the position that everybody wants to be in and that’s top of the Barclays Premier League. They’ve got the wealth and everything that anybody needs to make it a

success and are trying their best to do that.

Every fan would love the club that they support to be in the same fi nancial position as Manchester City but that’s not going to happen so there’s no point in us complaining about what they have got. The important thing for us is to compete against whoever is put up in front of us and we’ll try our best to do that.

Our last three home games have all ended in draws but the lads always enjoy playing here. Everyone has to remember that when we play at Anfi eld, the fans are on our side. We’ve also got to remember that we brought three or four boys in during the summer and it’s a big step for them to play at Anfi eld. It is bound to be different and a bit strange for them when they have been used to playing here and the support

being against them rather than for them. That support should work in our favour so we’ve just got to maintain what we’re doing. Also, I think that we’ve created enough chances in the matches we’ve played here to have won every one of those fi xtures. Clearly we haven’t done that but we’ll continue to work hard in training, gain confi dence from what we’re doing and make sure that the good work we have done is rewarded properly.

We want exactly the same thing as the people who come along to support us. We want to score as many goals as we can and collect as many points as we can – and that’s from every match not just our home games.

For all the talk about football, everything has been put into perspective by the recent death of Brad Jones’ son Luca. He was ill

for a long period and sadly didn’t get better. All of our thoughts and sympathies go to Brad and his family at this time.

What’s happened shows there are more important things than football and Brad will be given all the time he needs by the club. We all send our condolences to the family.

Thank you for your support,

Liverpool FC v Manchester City

THE win at Chelsea was a great

result, now we want to follow it up

with another victory today.

Going to Stamford Bridge is

always diffi cult. You don’t come

away with anything unless you

perform well.

We did exactly that, particularly

in the fi rst half. We passed the ball

sharply and pressed them all over

the park. That was obvious in the

fi rst goal.

We felt we should have been

further ahead by half-time and

knew they would enjoy some

periods of pressure in the second

half. Although they got level we still

showed enough character to go

on and win, with Pepe making a

brilliant save at 1-1. That was just

as important as the winning goal.

Obviously Glen’s a defender.

But he has so much quality going

forward too.

Afterwards the lads dedicated

the victory to Brad Jones and his

family following the sad death of

his son Luca. It’s obviously a very

tough time for Brad and all of us at

the club are here for him.

“AWAY FROM HOME SOME OF OUR DISPLAYS HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT. OUR ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT SO FAR IS THAT WE HAVEN’T COMBINED THOSE RESULTS WITH ENOUGH WINS AT ANFIELD. ”

We did exactly that, particularly in the fi rst half. We passed the ball sharply and pressed them.

GOING TO STAMFORD BRIDGE IS ALWAYS DIFFICULT. YOU DON’TCOME AWAY WITH ANYTHING UNLESS YOU PERFORM WELL.

The result last weekend has given

us lots of confi dence. We’re

now nine games unbeaten in all

competitions.

Away from home some of our

displays have been excellent. Our

only disappointment so far is that

we haven’t combined those results

with enough wins at Anfi eld. We

know we’ve drawn too many. That

has to end if we’re to fi nish where

we want to be. I don’t feel we’ve

played badly in some of the home

games where we’ve come away

with a point.

The 0-0 draw with Swansea

was probably the one occasion

where we haven’t performed like

we can. In the other draws we

made enough chances to win.

We just weren’t clinical enough

and in this league teams will take

advantage when you don’t punish

them.

That certainly applies against

today’s opposition. Man City are

where everybody wants to be; top

of the table. They’ve started the

season in great form.

We know we’ll have to be at our

best if we’re to defeat them. A fast

start is crucial. We got that in the

corresponding fi xture last season.

We really pressurised them and

got the fi rst goal after only 13

minutes.

Defeating them 3-0 that night

showed what we are capable of. I

think we’re a better side now than

we were then, and we’ll be aiming

to defeat them again.
