Joomla! has become one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet.
It is a 'free' open source framework and content publishing system designed for quickly creating highly interactive multi-language Web sites, online communities, media portals, blogs and e-commerce applications.
The name 'Joomla' is derived from the Swahili word 'Jumla', which means 'all together'.

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

One possible disadvantage of Joomla is that it will be so different than Mambo. In a few years, Mambo and Joomla will continue to evolve, and one or the other will turn out to be the dominate one. However, we cannot know which one that will be at this time, so you must weigh both the risk and the advantages.
Another disadvantage of Joomla is that it can be hard to get the hang of if you are new to the Joomla-Mambo software. In addition to this, Joomla, like Mambo, can be difficult to learn how to work when you are just starting. It’s hard to get it to work right in the beginning, disable certain features, and to make a template you like.

Joomla! already is a rich featured content management system, but if you're building a website with Joomla! and you need extra features which aren't available in Joomla! by default, you can easily extend it with extensions.
There are five types of extensions for Joomla!: Components, Modules, Plugins, Templates, and Languages. Each of these extensions handle specific functionality.

A component is an extension that enhances the core functionality of your joomla CMS. This is usually displayed in the “main content” section of your website. Think forum, image gallery, contacts.

A module, for the most part, is a program to create content that surrounds your “main content” section. These are mainly displayed in the different module positions: top, left, right, etc. Joomla modules usually go hand-in-hand to display certain information from other installed components. Ex: display latest forum post made on your forum component, display random images from your image gallery component, display latest news, most popular articles.
Examples: Banners (mod_banners), Menus (mod_menu), Who's Online (mod_whosonline)

Plug-ins are more advanced extensions and are in essence event handlers. In the execution of any part of joomla, be it the core, a module or a component, an event can be triggered. When an event is triggered, plug-ins that are registered with the application to handle that event execute. For example, a plug-in could be used to intercept user-submitted articles and filter out bad words. Plug-ins were known in Joomla! 1.0 as mambots.
Examples: content. searchbot, tinymce

A template is basically the design of your Joomla! powered website. With a template you can change the look and feel of your website. Templates have certain fields in which the component (just one) and modules (as many as you like) will be shown. Templates are easy to build or customize and they provide maximum flexibility in how you style your site.
There are mainly two default template present in joomla.
