Reading

In school children read in many ways:

• In shared reading as a class• In guided reading in a group but

reading at their own pace• Individually to a Teacher, Teaching

Assistant or helper• Reading is part of most lessons

Reading at Home• Reading at home is equally as important and we

welcome your support with this. Here are some suggestions of ways in which you can help:

• Be a good model (show them that you read too)• Watch the T.V together and then turn it off and

read together• Always choose a comfortable place and make it

fun.

Assessment • We assess your child’s reading ability,

based on previous records and present performance.

• This takes into account their comprehension and enjoyment, as well as word recognition

Reading Books• The children should have one reading book at a

time from the coloured coded selection, which are changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

• We encourage the children to read through the book at least twice. It is important for you to understand that in these books we focus on the children reading the key words and attempt the “new” vocabulary using their phonic knowledge

Reading Books and Comments

• We appreciate your comments in their reading record as this keeps us informed of how reading is going at home

• The coloured coded book provides the back bone for reading but it is important that the children read a broad range of books. In school they have free choice of books from the classroom which are changed frequently and children in year 1 are encouraged to join our school library

Phonics• Learning the sounds (phonemes) in words is a

crucial skill for both reading and writing• In year 1 the children continue with daily

phonic work introduced in the foundation stage

• The emphasis in year 1 is for the children to start to apply and extend their skills in blending phonemes for reading and spelling

Spellings• During the second part of the Autumn term

your child will bring home a list of spellings. Weekly spelling practise helps the children to consolidate their class based learning. It is very important you spend time with your child on these important words
