If you can’t do the first part well, this part is a nightmare! With practice however, you can help them learn how to do this - for free. Without this part reading and spelling will continue to be difficult ANY intelligent child can struggle with reading and spelling So before you spend time and money on assessments, expensive tutoring etc make sure you tackle this part When you say a word can they tell you how many speech sounds they can hear within that word? Can they correctly segment (order) those speech sounds - using a ‘quack hand’ (make a duck beak shape) to say the speech sounds as their hand ‘quacks’. Can they then write the lines, ready to work out which speech sound pics could represent those speech sounds?
