Reaching Out

President’s TaleHelen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much". This is exactly what made September the month it was- completely amazing, fantastic, awesome, superb and I go short of words to sum it all up.

I am privileged to have such a Board of Directors and General Body who pulled off all the projects of this month in great style. This month we covered activities of various kinds and genre – be it having a ball of time at the most grand Prom Night, Indradhanush which colored a life of 5000 children, a project with our dear Interactors – Interact Symposium, bringing the cultures of the World under one roof at – The 11th We are the World. The most special moment has been an article in HT NEXT. Kudos to the PR team!!!Congratulations on the completion of a successful Quarter. Let's take a leap into the 2ndQaurter and strive to work with the same enthusiasm and zeal.Thanking You,Yours In Rotaract,Rtr. Junaid Khan,President 2011-12.

Reaching Out

The President Is ComingTime and tide waits for no one. A rightful saying in today’s world. So we at the Rotaract Club of H.R.College decided to keep up with time and manage it efficiently! To make sure that we students realize time management the Professional Development Directors planned 'The President Is Coming '. A project on time management where one chalks out the time table of a president’s visit to india keeping certain mandates. There were different points given for doing various things, but we had to make sure minor details(Eg:- He had to eat both of his meals and he must get enough hours of rest, etc.) It was an eye opener to each one of us, and now we would be able to manage our time in a better way!

Prom Nite A night for which every colegel student awaits and is excited about the minute he or she gets into college. A night that gets all the romance out of us and if this has already created the excitement in you, The H.R. Prom promised to give us more. Prom was an awesome night which took palce at Sunville banquets, Worli which constituted of 3 floors: 2 for the stags who enjoyed the night with the latest bollywood numbers and the third room was for that of the couples who were ball dancing in the room peacefully, yet enjoying every minute to the fullest! Its one night where we danced our hearts out irrespective of who was there in the room and who wasn’t in the room! This one night will certainly be cherished by me all my life!!!

Bob The BuilderBob the builder was one of our first Professional Development projects. We were all divided into teams of nine. This project was a based on making a town out of limited resources with mandates of a town along with other structures! Out of the numerous teams that were there, whichever team made the best town with the best presentation would emerge victorious. We had to use our bob money to buy all the extra things we needed and the most efficient use of money was also taken into account. We had to plan out a whole city with representatives of the city as well! Shortcomings like emergencies and a short time span were the highlights of the project. Thus, in totality I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The team which won was ‘Bob Town’ and I was elated to be a part of the winning team. Overall, A great experience that taught us many things such as time management and also enhanced our creative and artistic skills!

R.C.H.R.We Are The WorldWe Are The World is the biggest annual inter-school Cultural Extravaganza in the City of Mumbai. It is one of the signature projects of the Rotaract Club of H.R.College. This year it was the eleventh we are the world and it was held at St. Stanislaus School, Bandra! We Are The World’11 was a very grand event with about thirty schools participating! The fashion shows and the dances put up by the schools were amazing and breath taking! We had Imran Khan come to judge the Fashion show! This was my first We Are The World fas an organizer and the experience was immaculate and will be etched in my memories forever. The event was a grand sucess and was very well organised because of the hard work and diligence of the 26th Board of Directors and the 26th General Body Members put together!

BlessingsWhen I first got to know that we were being taken to an old age home,I did not know what to expect. I've always been a very sentimental person, but I never thought of going to an old age home! St.King George Memorial's old age home was one of the most touching experiences I've had! When I reached there we were instructed not to disclose our phone numbers to anyone there, I was wondering why but not for too long. I met so many different kinds of people. All of them blew took me aback .Each one had a different story. The first lady I spoke was paralyzed and she had no legs, and she had to drag herself to move. When I began talking to her, I realized she is Gujarati too, and that her husband had left her and married another women, when I heard this I immediately broke in to tears I couldn't take it, and looking at me she told me that there isn't anything to cry and life goes on! This astonished me, i understood that how a person who has gone through so much in life can face it then why can't we? She was just one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. On that particular day I learned a lesson which people take years to understand, I understood I have everything and should treasure my life, whatever I have is more than anyone does, and crying over small things is immaterial, life is altogether a bigger place and my problems are nothing compared to what everyone else is going through !

Ed-PickPat jones was an American citizen. He was once asked,” what are the first things which come to your mind after hearing the word India?” He answered,”the Taj Mahal, the mouthwatering food, unique culture, pretty women, the next big thing''.the same question was asked to yash kapadia,an Indian student studying in usa.his answer was something like this, “poverty, corruption, traffic,no liquor till 25 !!” The answers say it all.one would expect a better answer from an Indian on this question. But that wasn't the case .itadjust not about the yash kapadia's answer. I' m sure that most of us would have given a similar answer if we were asked regarding this question. So how does that work if we are thinking of making India a superpower by 2020? If we can't present ourselves in a positive manner how do we expect others to do the same? Our country boasts a 5000 year old rich history. We have the world's 3rd largest army, the 2nd largest force of scientists, engineers and doctors, the world's largest democracy arguably the most diverse culture of the world in which a language changes on an average of 3kms throughout India. The world recognized chandrayaans role in finding water on the moon, the people of other countries are looking upon India as the next world leader in terms of economic and militarily might .India is predicted to be the next superpower. Everyone talks about optimism and all that stuff. But when it comes to our country it doesn't really work that way. Remember No country is perfect; we have to make it perfect. If we want our country to be perfect .the first thing that we need to do is get our attitude right. We need to be positive. We need to be INDIA POSITIVE.

The Glorifying LegendsI recall it was 6years, right in 2005, on 2nd January 2005 to be more precise on my 10th birthday when my dad gifted me the 4th Gen Ipod. I being a tech savvy guy at that time dint bother ponder over the brain which had created of this incredible device but I had definitely become an Apple fanatic. You would be quite astonished to know when I first heard about Steve Jobs, for me, He was just another tech billionaire who was capitalizing on our materialistic, gullible and fashion oriented society. On the sun-satured afternoon of 12June 2005 at Stanford California Steve said" "Your time is limited, so don't spend it living someone else's life." This statement greatly influenced my life.Steve Jobs had passed away, I read this in the newspaper. "3 Apples changed d World, 1st one seduced Eve, 2nd fell on Newton and d 3rd was offered to d World half bitten by Steve Jobs" was quoted by Shashi Tharoor. On reading this a hollow impulse went down my spine, as I had realized that today we had lost one of the greatest visionaries of our era. With a span of a second my thoughts diverted from a man, who in my eyes money oriented billionaire, to the phenomenal devise he was holding.I realized, here was a man who had the world the palm of his hand. Here was a man, who had innovation beyond imagination. Here was a man, who had bottomless wealth yet he was by heart and soul devoted to the service of Apple. There is this one question which has always been bothering me. "Why do we study so much?". To get degrees, to be lawyer, doctors and C.A.’s, to be successful, to get fame and get the unfathomable wealth. These degrees might just us to be the richest man in our grave but they won't give the satisfaction. But doing something incredible and going to sleep will give us contentment like nothing else. As we must not forget one of the greatest visionaries of our period said "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't not matter to me.Going to bed at night saying we have done something wonderful is what matters to me".P.S,- Steve Jobs had become my inspiration.

Today's youth on drugs, alchohol and smoking. According to me the only word that symbolises with today's youth is fast. Be it education or technologies, even shopping demands or the slang I haven't seen a faster change in any other generation. Also the media playing a pivotal role in their lives they are bound to be driven towards the harmful. While visiting my daughter's college on a few occasions during her admissions I wasn't surprised to see students smoking in the vicinity. But it also made me apprehensive for some time. They have access to alcohol or cigarettes or even drugs if they make up their mind to have it. The rich spoilt brats as we call them are not the only ones who come across as the victims of this vicious circle. My daughter once narrated an incident to me in which she spotted young boys riding in the ladies first class compartment of a train heavily under the influence of drugs and even taking some. Smoking is a fad and drinking is socially acceptable for them now a days. But nevertheless though we parents find it a little tough to accept it but there are various good aspects in today's generation with the bad ones. This generation has a determination that is rare to be seen. Also on the parents side good communication is a must. And a good chat is not only telling your children about the harmful and scolding them once in a while. It includes asking them about their day in the evening and chatting about nothing in particular for hours at end.

But children must also remember that though parents can be your friends in some situations they are your parents first in grave matters and pestering you is their job.

Mrs. Priti Vora(Mother of Smriti Vora)

“Search others for their virtues, thyself for thy vices.”Benjamin Franklin

Fashion plays a major role in the lives of today's youth. It controls their actions and makes them tread on the wrong path. Just as a coin has two sides to it, in the same way fashion has two sides to it. Fashion can be of great advantage as well as a vice. The most apt example of fashion as a vice is “DRUGS and ALCOHOL”. They are the two offspring of a devil mind. Earlier, drugs and alcohol were considered as stress busters and socializing elements. But today due to change in the outlook and perspective of the people, these two elements have become the source of increasing racial abuses, social evils. Alcohol and drugs are consumed by the youth so as to get the tag of being “COOL”. They have become an addiction. Every teenage party, every social gathering has an overdose of alcohol and drugs. Today's youth consume these more than the normal healthy food. This makes them go beyond control and makes them insensitive towards everything be it minor or major. They are enclosed within their own “DEVIL” world, which makes them a subject of social abuse.

Story of A HeartStarting a journey, this beautiful one,Out of blood and flesh when I was first undone.Naughty as I was, I always cried,Brains of my mother terribly I fried. But life passed and I grewBeating the beats as steady as they brew… I had friends and mom and dad,The friends though left…too bad. But life passed on and I grewBeating the beats as steady as they brew… I teened and got new allies,Some of the best and special ones…some bull-eyes.They withered away too…thought life was mad,Some problem with me sure it had. But life passed on and I grewBeating the beats as steady as they brew… Found a “soul mate” as they say,Had a lot of fights and were merely at bay.Broke up didn't we?I guess all the faults I had…Gee!!

But life passed on and I grew

Beating the beats as steady as they brew…

Old now, leaving the peopleI earned my respect and fortune with,

Helped me my office mates, sure they did!

But life passed on and I grewBeating the beats as steady as they brew…

Is nothing in life ever-lasting?

Why the hell do all desires keep blasting?

But life passed on and I grewBeating the beats as steady as they brew…

Relaxing on my deathbed,

Waiting for eternal sleep to my head…Through the journey of life…coming to its key!

Nothing in life stays,

Except the soul and the creator's maze…But life still passes and I grow

Beating the beats as steady as they flow!!!
