So who plans where, how and when, the pave- ments and roads are treated to avoid accidents? Is it the Scottish Government or may- be the City Council or even the local Community Council or it could be Mr Nobody because anyone we’ve asked seems to pass the buck. This week alone we have heard of two elderly pensioners falling on the pavements in this area alone, two pensioners who were just going about their daily routine of going to the shop for their milk and bread. Little did they know that when they left their house they would end up in the Casualty Department of the Royal. So who is respon- sible for gritting our roads and pavements then. Firstly we looked at the Transport Minister Keith Brown and we discovered that the ultimate responsibility for roads in Scotland lies with him but he can’t be expected to go out and grit the roads now, can he. So we looked at Glasgow City Council’s winter mainte- nance plan and we discovered that they prioritise the grit- ting. Major Bus Routes, Junc- tions and Emergency Access Routes are first to get the treatment, roads in schemes and council estates are well down the list of priority. How do they decide when to salt the areas? According to their web- site this is what happens.. Land and Environmental Services has a contract with the Metreological Office to supply weather forecasts for Glasgow each day from the beginning of October until mid May. The department has also installed ice stations at five selected locations within the city which together with the facility to access fifteen other stations in adjacent au- thorities help to improve the accuracy of forecasts. Staff can access information from these stations via portable computers. Pre gritting op- erations are undertaken from the beginning of November until the end of March on a standby arrangement. Ad hoc gritting is done outwith this period. It also says Footpaths and Pavements are always treated??? Do you really be- lieve this? Tell that to the two pensioners mentioned earlier. All the Re-Gen is asking for is for someone to visit the streets off the major roads, the streets and pavements where people actually live and make sure they are safe for the citizens of Glasgow. If they can clear the pavements in other places, surely it is not too hard to do it here. After all the winter is just starting or did those in authority think it would miss us this year!!! “GET A GRIP - THE ROADS ARE SLIPPY”

“GET A GRIP - THE ROADS ARE SLIPPY”

Brooke Dornan, from East-bank Primary school is pic-tured with her winning Christmas card entry and her prize Young Booze Busters teddy bear. She was awarded this at an assembly by GEAAP staff in front of her whole school last Monday morning (26th November).

Pupils and staff were de-lighted that Brooke’s artistic talent shone through and that she was able to put across a safe message around alco-hol for this Christmas. Pupils were particularly impressed that the Young Booze Bust-ers teddy bear was taller than Brooke!

Brooke has learned much about alcohol awareness from GEAAP’s Young Booze Bust-ers staff visiting Primary 6

& Primary 7 pupils at her school for four weeks. R o l e - p l a y, c o m p e t i -tions, games, drawing & alcohol-free cocktails are just some of the activities staff use with pupils to increase their knowledge of alcohol. As well as having fun learning from this, and from GEAAP’s www.youngbooze-busters.com site, it will help pupils make informed choices about alcohol now and in the future.

Brooke is picture here in the middle of two of her classmates (Melissa & Re-becca) outside Traffic Design

Studio in Park Circus, Glasgow. On Thurs-day last week (29th November), these pu-pils worked hard with Graphic Designers us-ing the latest comput-er technology to put the finishing touches to the winning entry before sending the artwork to be printed.

When the Christmas cards are profession-ally printed, GEAAP will send one to all the

primary schools in the East of Glasgow, as well as each of the partners they work with all year. Brooke will receive a pack of Christmas cards for her family and friends, and Eastbank Primary will also re-ceive a pack to distribute. Well done Brooke!

Runner-up goodie bags were given to exceptional competition entries in the Alexandra Parade, St.Paul’s, Quarry Brae, Sandaig and St.Bridget’s Primary Schools. GEAAP would like to thank everyone who entered from the schools they deliver their Young Booze Busters pro-gramme in, and urge schools to keep an eye open for more Young Booze Busters com-petitions coming in the New Year. In the meantime, pupils aged 9-18 years are encour-aged to try the alcohol aware-ness quizzes on GEAAP’s www.youngboozebusters.com site.

There is an ipod touch to be won every month!

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. SERVING UP A CHRISTMAS WINNER

Tree-mendous.........tenants Margaret Woods (left) and May Hollis take delivery of the festive plates.

TENANTS IN Glasgow’s east end have just been served a Christmas winner! Thenue Housing has donated Christmas-themed dinner services to its two sheltered housing complexes in Bridgeton and Calton. The early Christmas present comes just weeks after both developments received a sparkling endorsement

by the Care Inspectorate which visited both.

The sheltered housing developments were rated highly by inspectors from the Care Inspectorate and were awarded

a mark of five out of six . The high quality crockery featuring Christmas trees will now be used when the

tenants hold festive

gettogethers and brings an authentic

feel to their Christmas celebrations. Charlie Turner, Chief Executive of Thenue said: “We hope the tenants enjoy the new dinner servicesduring the festive season and they come with our very best wishes.” Just thinking.... If they had got that extra mark would there have been something to put on the plates Charlie?

EAST END PAEDOPHILE JAILEDA paedophile from

Dennistoun who preyed on children as young as 2 years old during the 1990’s was eventually convicted and jailed last month. William Dennis (46) of Cumbernauld Road carried out attacks on a girl and two boys over a long period forcing the children to take part in perverted practices resulting in using indecent behaviour towards each other. He also preyed

on vulnerable women getting many of them pregnant on numerous occasions. This perverted former window cleaner didn’t have the guts to admit the offences thereby forcing his victims to take the stand during his trial at the High Court in Glasgow. A jury found him guilty of rape, indecent behaviour and assault at various addresses throughout the city. He was jailed for 12 years at

Edinburgh High Court and Lord Burns slammed the appalling catalogue of crimes when sentencing the creep.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said, “Child protection officers worked closely with the police on this case and we were pleased to support the efforts that led to a conviction. The focus for our officers is always the welfare of the child”.

Mars your ruling planet ensures you are where the action is in this position you can open new doors, win important battles or choose a different way to show the world what you’re capable of. Try to control the need to be autocratic though as this will be counterproductive if you have to deal with bosses or authorities.

Relationships will have an impact on your professional life this month, to some Taureens, collaboration and associations will be relevant and they will consider doing some deals or signing some contracts, others might be about contacts with clients or with the public, a good time to socialize and get known for your talents.

Stress and the tendency towards excesses will be Gemini’s enemies this month; you could easily lose control now or expose yourself to dangers. You’ll need inner harmony and you’ll have to make a disciplinary effort to get it, try to get enough rest, exercise, and avoid stimulants, you need time out this month!

Mars in Cancer’s house of couples will polarize wishes and passion. Full of initiative, anxious and daring, Mars will urge you to take the first step in a sentimental relationship or make gestures you wouldn’t have made before, a thirst for love will be big and immediate. Go girl go!

If you’re patient and professional this month there’ll you will benefit as fateful Pluto is on your side, it will help you be at the right place at the right time to take advantage of an opportunity. Moreover, all throughout December you stand out; promote your talents, including the creative-artistic ones.

Venus, the planet of love, will cross your house of communication and action, making you a live wire, but with no real stability. The general climate seems to be more seasonal fleets of flirting than an affair or serious commitments. Your sexuality will have a remarkable influence on the choices you’ll make this month using your womanly wiles to get your way.

Part of your energy and motivation will go to the problems related to your home, family, financially, Venus will make sure you’ll benefit from some chances in the first part of December money will mainly come from the activities around work. You’ll need firmer life discipline, a more organised routine, with good eating habits, enough sleep and exercise.

You’ll feel a great need for love and you’ll have a lot of love to offer, you’ll feel the need to share everything with the other one, to have perfect timing with them. Throughout the whole month in December you’ll experience an enhanced communications with those you love now mercury is back on track.

With the Sun now in Sagittarius, your chances to stand out will be very big, the generator of life, will highlight your qualities, will lend you strength, feed your ambitions, and place you in a dominant or very visible position. You can now use your talent of a leader and organiser. Try to keep communication honest.

You’ll find it very easy to move, act, make decisions, and initiate procedures. Mars in Capricorn will lend you boldness, courage and power. You won’t be afraid to fight; you’ll even do it wholeheartedly if you think it’s worth it.You can accomplish many things this month.

Success will depend on others or how you work with others. Maybe you usually like taking action independently but it won’t be the case now. It’s time for cooperation and for coordinated collective effort. And you yourself can be the coordinator, as you benefit from both the preference of the group and its respect.

December is very likely to be a month of professional success. The Sun, Mercury and Venus will go through Pisces’ house of career and fame, each contributing to success as much as they can. The Sun, with its shine that highlights, Mercury with its intelligence and skill, Venus with its charm and good relationships. The whole image shows you in a good light.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

“Tartan-tastic Day” at Swinton

To celebrate St Andrew’s Day last Friday (30th November) staff

and pupils in Swinton Primary in Rhindmuir Road Baillieston had a “Tartan-tastic” Day! Everyone including the staff went to school dressed in as much tartan as possible and their efforts raised money for the Scottish charity, Children 1st.

The best dressed pupils and staff strutted their stuff on the catwalk at assembly and during a whole school assembly, Eilidh, Cara and Olivia presented a piece about the history of St Andrew, and they did a wonderful job. The school pupils also all enjoyed singing Scottish songs and they were delighted that Ellis Cappie a former Swinton pupil could join them and demonstrate Scottish Highland dancing. Throughout the day all the pupils moved around a variety of Scottish workshops learning about Scottish history and culture. These included dancing, singing, art work based on famous Scottish film scenes, and the history of tartan. To complete the “Tartan-tastic” event everyone got to taste some Scottish delights such as the famous drink made from “Girders”, Irn Bru and shortbread! Everyone had a wonderful day and really enjoyed celebrating St Andrew’s Day.

You may have seen a poster, or received a leaflet about a Glasgow 2014: East End Communication Event or like many you may not have. However the event was held last Monday (3rd December) at the brand new Emirates Arena. Young people from the local community sacrificed their youth drop-in service to attend the event. Elderly residents from Bridgeton and Dalmarnock ventured out in the cold and icy night to hear about how their community was developing. There are a few definitions of the word communication such as “the imparting or exchanging of information” or “the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings”. This is where the confusion and misunderstanding begins, I like many others perceived

this event to be focused on local issues, local concerns and have some opportunities for local people to share their views. This event which was organised by the 2014 Organising Committee alongside key partners such as Glasgow 2014 evidently used the first definition as it was more of an information event than a community event.

Things that you may be accustomed to at community events such as; relevance to the community, community involvement in delivering the event and even a Q+A session were not featured. Glasgow 2014 will be an amazing international sporting event it will bring nations together to participate in 17 sports and there will be over 200 Golden Moments. You may have heard

this or something similar before via the internet, television or other media sources but you may not know how many beds, bottles of water or services will be needed for the 11 days of sport.

Even though this event went into great detail regarding the temporary facilities and services and organisational aspects of the games it achieved nothing in terms of addressing any issues/concerns or worries that are shared by many local residents.

I as an active local person know that the real questions that need answered and explored are regarding; Housing Allocations, Employment & Training Opportunities, Health and Education Services, Lack of free and accessible community facilities and the un-accountability of public servants who make decisions on behalf of local people without any engagement, consultation or advance notice. I am completely disappointed and shocked at how this great opportunity was mis-managed and completely overlooked the needs of the local communities. With this in mind I will be organising a community event and inviting key 2014 games stakeholders to come and share their view, plans and vision regarding a lasting games legacy. Most importantly this will provide a platform for local residents to voice their opinions and get answers and

clarification on issues, concerns and worries that really matter to us who live and work in the East End. Legacy is another word that has several different meanings but a Social Legacy is what’s really needed in the East End of Glasgow.

Clyde Gateway URC are working hard to deliver on some aspects of a Social Legacy and it was great to attend their fantastic Public Meeting the other week. They have made some great steps and admitted much more needed to be done.

To deliver a real Social Legacy then key organisations such as Glasgow City Council, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Local Housing Association and the 2014 Organising Committee, need to work in partnership and alongside local elected members and more importantly engage and consult with local residents to deliver their vision, hopes and aspirations of a Social Legacy. Let’s work on a Social Legacy Plan that can be duplicated in the North of the City if Glasgow is appointed host city of the 2018 Youth Olympics next year. If you have any ideas, would like to get involved in planning this event or would like to be kept up to date please feel free to contact David Stewart MSYPGlasgow Shettleston on:[email protected] The Dalmarnock Centre, 3 Lily Street, Dalmarnock G40 3EU TEl: 0141 556 4776

The brand new, state of the art Bridgeton Library in the Olympia was officially opened on Monday 3 December. The ceremony was performed by Councillor Archie Graham, the Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Red-mond, the Vice-Chair of Clyde Gateway and Mrs Grace Donald, an 88 year-old lifelong resident of Bridgeton who was a frequent user of the Olympia in its heyday as a cin-ema.

Councillor Archie Graham said “Libraries are at the very heart of our communities throughout Glasgow and the new Bridgeton Library will deliver more services for and on behalf of local people than ever before. New life has been breathed into the Olympia which has recovered all of its former glory and the new library will ensure it will play a vital role in the life of Bridgeton for generations to come.”

In addition to being the Vice-Chair of Clyde Gateway, George Redmond is also the coun-

cillor for the Bridgeton and Dalmarnock area. He said “The opening of the library is the lat-est chapter in what is becoming a thrilling story associated with the regeneration of the local communities. There is an incredible transformation under-way across the whole area but I’ve no doubt this £10m investment to bring the Olympia back into use is the one that has got local people most excited. This fantastic new library really does have the best of everything and I have no doubt it is going to be very popular with residents of all ages”.

The involvement of Grace Donald in the opening ceremony was not just about pro-viding a link with the building’s former uses but in recognition of a lifetime’s involvement in working with and for the community. As members of her family and many of her friends looked on Grace said, “This has been a very special day. For years the Olympia was a big part of my life to me and I spent many a happy time here on nights out at the cinema with my husband and my children. I was re-ally upset when it closed its doors all those years ago as it was a really lowpoint in Bridgeton’s history. I never dreamed that I’d ever get back in-side the building and it’s a big thrill to see what

Clyde Gateway and Glasgow Life have done. I’ve lived here all my life and I know that Bridgeton Cross has never looked better.”

As well as an extensive range of books, newspapers and magazines, the library has 32 PC’s, online learning, a community room and will deliver computer courses, reader devel-opment programmes and a Children’s Area. It also offers an enhanced business resource for Glasgow firms and access to a rich collection of local and family history resources.

Hospitality and Catering students at John Wheatley College in the East of Glasgow have trumped their previous year’s re-cord breaking fundraising figure by almost £400. Throughout the current session the students have held Macmillan Coffee Mornings, afternoon teas and cake and bake stalls to help raise funds for the very deserving charity of Macmillan Cancer Support. In the previous year, they raised around £860 but this year they pulled out all the stops and, with hard work and commitment from the students at both Easterhouse and East End Campuses, they raked in a fantastic £1,257.92!! Their fellow students at the College have benefitted by

being able to buy exquisite pastries and delicious home-made cakes. The cheque was accepted by Pauline Reay, a volunteer with Macmillan fundraising. In thanking the delighted students and very proud staff, Pauline spoke of the difference that these donations make to the Macmillan services, including in the East of Glasgow where Macmillan Support Groups run at both Easterhouse and Dennistoun Librar-ies.Some of the hard-working students and staff are pictured here with Pauline and the huge cheque. A massive well-done to everyone involved – you certainly make a difference!!

Building a sustainable futureCity Building is one of Scotland’s largest construction companies. We deliver construction, repairs and maintenance solutions to commercial, public and third sector organisations across the country.

Our success is due to our forward-thinking approach and looking for ways to deliver services differently. We run Scotland’s largest - and most successful - apprentice training centres in Glasgow. Here, we train more than 450 apprentices each year with skills such as painting and decorating, joinery, plumbing, electrical, roofing and construction operations.

City Building delivers new build housing, schools and other large construction projects, whilst continuing to deliver our core business of repairs and maintenance services across Central Scotland.

We also operate Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), one of Europe’s largest supported facilities, employing more than 240 people, over 50% of whom have a disability.

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and City Building are cre-ating job opportunities for peo-ple in the East End – and helping residents keep their gardens spick and span.

GHA is doing everything it can to help Winget residents in Carntyne while major refur-bishment work is carried out on their homes.

As part of that process, ten-ants are decanted from their home – and contractors City Building have now taken on eight environmental trainees to work on the upkeep of their gardens.

The Carntyne Wingets – built in the 1920s using a reinforced concrete design – were first designated ‘structurally defec-tive’ in 1987 due to their con-struction type. GHA agreed to

save and upgrade the Winget homes in November 2009.

The new environmental train-ees are helping out by tidy-ing gardens, cutting grass and trim-ming hedges to make sure gardens are ship-shape in time for resi-dents mov-ing back into their Winget homes.

The project has been so s u c c e s s f u l two of the trainees have already been offered jobs on other City Build-ing projects.

As well as offer-ing vital employ-ment opportunities for young people, the environmental initiative is mak-ing a big difference to Winget tenants and homeowners.

Tenant Margaret Sharp, 79, was de-lighted after mov-ing back from into her home to find her garden trans-formed.

Margaret said: “The lads have done brilliantly. The garden looks fantastic. They cleared away the moss, cut back some of the trees

and even put a new fence round the garden.

“It looks a hundred per cent better and it means I’m getting

much more light into my house too.

“It’s a really good thing for people to get these job oppor-tunities too.”

Gordon Sloan, GHA Chair and himself a Winget tenant, said: “It’s great that, with our part-ners at City Building, we can offer local people employment opportunities in these tough times.

“The trainees themselves have really responded well to the chance to learn new skills and residents have told me how much they appreciate the im-provement in the environment. It’s a win-win situation.”

Graham Paterson, Executive Director of City Building, said: “Partnerships like this add to the communities where we work by creating these jobs. We are de-lighted to be able to offer these trainees this chance.”

Trainee posts offer jobs lifeline and help keep gardens spick and span

John Wheatley College’s spar-kling new Nail Bar, Beauty Room, Make-up Studio and Hair Salon at the Easterhouse Campus is now open to the public - under the name of Elegance Beauty. With an eclectic guest list, the students helped to open the newly refurbished facilities with make-up demonstrations, polish and manicures (including Shel-lac!) and hair styling to show off their new skills and encourage clients to get the message out there. Several were busy in the Nail Bar showing off their consid-erable nail-art skills while others were demonstrating their make-up artistry – excellent for those planning for a special occasion. In the refurbished hair salon, dedicated hairdressing students were displaying their styling and hair-up skills. In addition, the College’s talented Hospitality & Catering students put together a delicious array of canapés and mocktails and moved graciously among the guests offering

refreshments. College Princi-pal, Alan Sherry, dropped in to see how the event was going. He spent some time chatting with the students who had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of products and treatments. He said, “I’m very impressed with the clear enthusiasm and skills of our stu-dents who organised this event themselves. We’re delighted that we have been able to invest in these new facilities which recreate a professional salon environment for our students to learn their skills. They each have extensive knowledge and talents which will continue to grow as the year progresses. I hope our community can support them in

this venture. “My thanks go to the students and the committed staff who have supported them.” Bringing in the public to sample their Hair and Beauty services gives learners the opportunity to have ‘hands-on’ experience and helps them to develop their customer service skills into the bargain. The students develop their skills to a certain level and only then are they able to pro-vide services to the public. With a range of treatments, there is a very reasonable charge for any treatment sessions or hairdress-ing services. If you’d like to find out more, contact John Wheatley College on 0141 588 1500 or visit the face-book page at Elegance Beauty.

MORE than 600 Glasgow dog owners have been fined for fail-ing to pick up after their pets. A Clean Glasgow campaign de-signed to force irresponsible dog owners to clean up their act has seen 637 fixed penalty notices issued in 12 months. The anti dog fouling cam-paign has sparked huge public support and 85 Glasgow social landlords with tens of thou-sands of tenants have also given it their backing. Enforcement officers from Glasgow Community & Safety Services continue to blitz local neighbourhoods to spot anyone creating a potential health

hazard by failing to clean up after their dogs. Latest figures show the initiative has prompted a 68% increase in calls to the Clean Glasgow hotline by people reporting culprits or identifying sites where there is a particular problem. The city’s network of public CCTV cameras is also being used to identify people failing to clean up their dogs’ faeces. A total of 11,590 warning letters have also been sent to streets or closes where suspects live. The blitz is now stepping

up a gear with enforcement officers visiting neighbour-hoods unan-nounced. Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The initial part of the campaign was as much about educa-tion as enforcement. By telling people we were coming to their neighbourhood we aimed to change habits by making it clear that irrespon-sible behaviour was unacceptable and would not be toler-ated.

“We are extremely pleased with the initial results and thrilled by the huge level of support from the general public who have been phoning in to report those flouting the law. There is also an-ecdotal evidence that those who have been fined have changed their ways and now pick up after their pets. “However, anyone who thought they could revert to their filthy ways when we left their area can now think again. The crackdown continues and no one can afford to risk receiving a fine.” The fines are £40 rising to £60 if unpaid within 28 days. Please call Clean Glasgow on 0800 027 7027 to report dirty dog owners in your community.

EVERY year the problem of Domestic Abuse comes to the fore and every year those who have never experienced it glance at stories like these, shrug their shoulders and then forget all about it, while those who experience it on a day to day or week to week basis, just pray that it would end and let them live a normal life without being Beaten, Verbally Abused, Sexually Assaulted and everything else that goes along with Domestic Abuse. This scourge on society can occur in any walk of life, from the person living a great lifestyle in their £1 million home through to the wee woman who has to make ends meet every week with hardly any income. Domestic abuse crosses all walks of life and the excuse that drink brings it out more, is a fallacy, in fact the perpetrator who actually

carries out Domestic Abuse while sober can be far more vicious as their brain is calmly telling them to carry out acts of violence which terrifies their partner and only ceases when they want it to. Very often in these

cases children are exposed to the violence carried out or hearing it from another room and it can affect them for the rest of their life. Slogans like “Domestic Abuse-There’s No Excuse” literally mean next to nothing now as everyone knows there is no excuse but “Abuse your Partner and We’ll Jail You” doesn’t trip off the tongue with quite the same ease, although now Strathclyde Police mean exactly that as they have changed the way they treat Domestic Abuse and have done so for the past couple of years now. If you are experiencing physical, emotional, sexual or financial abuse or are being intimidated or by I Want This”threatened by a current or previous partner, you are being subjected to domestic abuse. You may be feeling frightened, isolated and ashamed.

Remember You are not to blame for what is happening to you, it is NOT your fault. Above all, you are not alone and you don’t need to suffer in silence. Help is available to you. As we’ve previously stated, Domestic abuse exists in all sections of our communities. Domestic abuse can exist in all types of relationships between partners and ex partners. Abusers and victims can be male or female, any race or religion and from

all different types of background. What we want is to eradicate this horrible, horrible crime once and for all but we already know that this is impossible because some youngsters who have witnessed their parent being abused may think this is the norm in a relationship or, and this is one of the main reasons it continues, the abused partner reports it to the Police then refuses to press the charges and goes back into the same cycle of abuse for years to

come. Anyone abusing a Partner should be punished severely by the courts and that shouldn’t reflect on the abused partner. If you are subjected to Domestic Abuse LIFT THE PHONE, TELL A NEIGHBOUR TO LIFT THE PHONE, GET HELP IMMEDIATELY!!! The Police now take the

victim’s side and they and other agencies can give you all the real help you need to get your life back on track and moving forward.

The former Foxy Bingo Hall at Shandwick Square Shopping Centre has a new lease of life and it’s all down to 3 differ-ent organisations who have teamed together to make the place a much more welcom-ing and satisfying venue for the Easterhouse community. CORE (Community Outreach Easterhouse) came into being last July as part of the Easter-house Community Church run by Stuart Patterson and his wife Tracy and thereby hangs a tale. Stuart was born and raised in Easterhouse and like a few others in the area basi-cally took the wrong road and became involved in drugs and unfortunately became ad-dicted to heroin. Thankfully help was near in the guise of the Teen Challenge (Christian Drug and Alcohol Rehab) and Stuart attended this from May 1997, and eventually working in the project until Septem-ber 2000. He then moved to Ireland where he met Tracy and they were married in March 2001. Now parents with 3 children they all moved back to Scotland in 2009 to work with

the Haven Kilmacolm mens rehab and Teen Challenge Strathclyde. Stuart was now well on the road to recovery and with Tracy’s help they started up the Easterhouse Commu-nity Church in 2011 initially holding their meetings in Blairtummock Community Hall working closely with the Pavillion Youth Cafe to provide activities for the young people of the Blair-tummock area but always in the back of their mind to find premises of their own. Step in Renia Tysler (Manager of Shandwick Shopping Centre) who heard their plight and between her and the parent company British Land (who have been a tremendous supporter of local projects in the Easterhouse area) she was able to offer them the former Foxy Bingo Club in Shandwick Square. Now the church uses the premises to host its worship services and thanks to a very generous donation from British Land of

£8131.00 Stuart and his team have been able to revamp the former “gam-bling den” into a place worthy of welcoming Easterhouse residents to a more fulfilling pastime than “Bingo”. CORE now have an excellent Drop-In venue where people of all ages can get free tea and coffee plus a warm welcome and that is not all. The venue also hosts a ful-ly equipped Jobclub resource room ( Jobcare@CORE) thanks to the excellent dona-tion from British Land and with their help and expertise there is now Internet Ac-cess and materials to assist people who are unemployed back into employment and Further Education. Stuart and Tracy have set aside Thursday nights for CORE Life

which is their work with people who have life controlling problems. They provide a warm, non judgemental atmosphere

where people can begin to face the issues that hold them back from reclaiming their lives and in January they will be launching the training aspect of this as well. Another big plus that has occurred since CORE came back to Easterhouse was in August the inaugural “Arise Easterhouse” community Gala Day took place and this proved very successful. CORE run a Sunday evening children’s programme which runs alongside the adult eve-ning service at the premises in Westerhouse Road ( just past the main doors of the Shopping Centre), and of course there are various Kids activities running throughout the year. Why not take a trip along and see for yourself just what is on offer at CORE, Stuart and Tracy and the team will be delighted to see you.

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

Here are some frequently asked questions in relation to Welfare Reform and the intro-duction of the new Universal Credit.

What is Universal Credit? It’s a benefit that will replace working tax credit, child tax credit, housing benefit, income support, job seekers allowance and employment and sup-port allowance. All of these benefits will be paid as one “Universal Credit”.

Who will receive Universal Credit? Single people or a couple jointly of working age can get Universal Credit. However, it won’t be payable if you have savings of £16,000 or more and to qualify you have to accept a “Claimant Commit-ment”.

What is a Claimant Commit-ment? All claimants must agree to meet requirements related to finding work. There will be sanctions for failing to meet any of the requirements under the Claimant Commit-

ment.

What is Working Age? Anyone over 16 and under the age of 61 at the time Universal Credit is introduced in October 2013.

How do you apply for Univer-sal Credit? Applications must be made to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). The expectation is that you will apply on-line using a computer rather than filling in a form or going to an office to make a claim.

How will Universal Credit be paid? It will be paid monthly in arrears and anyone receiving Universal Credit must have a bank account. If you don’t have a bank account, you RE-ALLY need to get one before Universal Credit comes into force.

When does Welfare Reform begin? The reforms will begin next October and anyone in receipt of the benefits covered by Universal Credit will be placed on the new system by

the end of 2017. However, if you’re circumstances change, you will move to the new system right away.

Will Benefits be capped? Yes, from April 2013 no couple or single parent can receive more than £26,000 per annum and single claimants can’t receive more than £18,000 per annum.

What about my housing ben-efit? Under the new system, any help you receive with your rent will be part of Universal Credit. You will have to pay rent yourself as there will no longer be direct payments to your landlord as happens under the current system. Failure to pay your rent will result in arrears and housing providers may have no option but to take court action and seek eviction.

Is there anything I should do now? Yes. If you receive benefits and think you’ll be affected by these reforms, you should seek advice right away. Contact a Welfare Advice centre immediately or speak to your landlord. The worst thing you can do is ignore the fact that changes are going to be introduced.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN WELFARE REFORMRe-GENTHE

If you claim Housing Benefit to help pay your rent you may be af-fected by changes from April 2013. The changes mean that some people will get less Housing Benefit than they did before.

This information will help you find out what’s hap-pening and how you can prepare as many tenants will be concerned about the changes to Housing Benefit. How many bedrooms do you have? From April 2013 if you rent a Housing Asso-ciation property and have one or more spare bedrooms your Housing Benefit may get reduced. You could be affected if…• You are 16 to 61 years old• If you are working and only get a small amount of Housing Benefit• Even if you are sick or disabled What is classed as a “spare” bedroom? If you have more bed-rooms than the Govern-ment says you need, under the new rules you will lose part of your Housing Benefit.

The new rules state you will be allocated one bedroom for: • Each adult couple• Any other person age 16 or over• Two children of the same sex under 16• Two children under the age of 10 regardless of sex• Any other child• A carer (who does not normally live with you) if you or your partner need overnight care.

It doesn’t matter who uses the spare room, the new rules will even apply if:• You and your partner need to sleep apart because of a medical

condition• The main home of your children is another address, but you have a spare room for when they stay over with you eg. Access to children

What happens if you have a spare bedroom? If you have one spare bedroom your Housing Benefit will be cut by 14% of the rent you pay weekly. If you have two or more spare bedrooms you will lose 25% of the rent you pay weekly. You will have to pay to your landlord the dif-ference between your Housing Benefit and your rent if your benefit is cut.

Limit on BenefitsFrom April 2013, there will be a cap on the overall amount of ben-efit you can receive.

The Government will add up how much money you get from a range of benefits including: housing benefit, job-seekers allowance, employment support allowance, child ben-efit, child tax credit and carer’s allowance.

If the amount of your benefits add up to more than the maximum allowed your housing benefit will be reduced.

From April 2013 the maximum amount of benefit you will be enti-tled to is:• £500 per wk for single parents• £500 per wk for couples with or without children• £350 per week for single people without children This will not apply if….• You get pension credit or working tax credit• A member of your household is claiming disability living allow-ance, attendance al-lowance or the support element of employment support allowance.

Emergency Numbers From Housing AssociationsTHIS year must go down as one of the wettest in recent history as reports of flood-ing from all over Britain have been on the news and even the “Summer “Holidays” were a wash-out. As we approach the “real” win-ter period householders are ex-tremely worried about a harsh winter and as housing associa-tions can testify this is the time of year they seem to get the most calls. In preparation for this some of the local housing associations in the area have supplied us with various emergency numbers

you might like to keep handy, just in case you need to call on someone over the holiday pe-riod. Localised flooding has been occurring in certain areas and with the amount of rain that has fallen over the past month it is little wonder, but we have been luckier than those who find their homes flooded almost as soon as the rain starts. Taking a little care by keeping the house heated on at least a low setting overnight or even if you are going away for a few days, this might be the differ-ence between a burst pipe or a

cozy house to come home to. We have not had any power cuts recently but with the she-nanigans at Westminster who knows what might happen in the near future. So why not invest in a couple of cheap torches obtainable from most household stores and then if the lights go out at least you’ll be able to see. Remember torches are far saf-er than candles, though maybe not as romantic. Keep these numbers handy as they could be very useful in the weeks to come and hopefully you won’t have to use them.

At this time of year we would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the local community about the dangers and risks surrounding “Bogus Callers” and “Cold Callers”. The following advice is given in an effort to help people prevent doorstep scams:

TOP TEN TIPS.1. Be aware when an unexpect-ed caller attends at your door. 2. Think before you open the door – if a spy-hole is fitted USE IT, if not then look out a window to see who is there. 3. Do NOT open the door to strangers. 4.

Treat every stranger with cau-tion. 5. Ask who they are before opening the door. 6. DO NOT let them in unless you are expect-ing them. 7. Be wary of special offers or anybody warning you that there are problems with your house. 8. DO NOT agree to work unless you have spoken to somebody else regarding it I.E. a friend or neighbour. 9. NEVER hand over money. 10. IF IN DOUBT KEEP THEM OUT. Consideration should also be given to using the password scheme provided by many domestic service providers. This scheme allows residents

to choose their own unique password which would then be used by staff from the domestic company calling at your house to read meters, etc. Below are the telephone numbers for the major domestic service providers which can be called to set up the password scheme. SCOTTISH GAS – 0800 072 8625, SCOTTISH POWER – 0141 272 6044 (Colin Miller), SCOTTISH HYDRO – 0800 622 838 Telephone numbers for the police are: EMERGENCY – 999, NON-EMERGENCY – 0141 532 4300

Be Environmentally-Friendly During the Holiday SeasonSmall changes make a big

difference in striving for a more earth-conscious holiday. With alterations to Christmas traditions, celebrating a green holiday is simple.Give Mother Nature a present by celebrating a green Christmas

with these concrete steps to a more environmentally-conscious holiday. On the first day of Christmas, get a live tree. The smell of an evergreen tree is a strong part of many families’

Christmas traditions. A live tree can be re-potted in the yard to bring joy for the rest of the year. If a live tree is not manageable, at least recycle the tree at the end of the season. Many cities will grind them up for mulch and wood chips. On the second day of Christmas, limit gift purchases. How many new things does anyone need this year? Skip store-

bought items and exchange home-made gifts, housecleaning or babysitting certificates, or go in together on a professional photographer for a family picture. Instead of a traditional gift exchange have a white elephant Christmas exchange, make a group donation to a charity of choice, or give the gift of time instead of things. Stick to the list and don’t get sucked into last minute must-have purchases. On the third day of Christmas, re-use wrapping paper.Instead of buying multiple rolls of wrapping paper, get creative

with how to wrap presents. Try to re-use wrapping paper from previous years, use paper bags or sections of newspaper, or even cloth napkins or dish towels. If bright Christmas wrapping paper is an important part of holiday joy, then at least recycle the wrapping paper. On the fourth day of Christmas, decorate with natural items.Pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and cranberries make beautiful table

décor and have the dual benefit of being both environmentally friendly and inexpensive. Forgo purchasing additional holiday decorations and use branches from the evergreen Christmas tree instead. On the fifth day of Christmas, burn beeswax candles.Burning candles at Christmas-time is both beautiful and energy

efficient. Instead of traditional petroleum-based candles, purchase candles made of biodegradable and renewable materials such as beeswax. On the sixth day of Christmas, limit errand trips.Instead of driving back and forth, try to get as many purchases

and holiday errands done on a single trip. Both the earth and your pocket book will thank you for limiting oil usage as the cost of gasoline skyrockets. On the seventh day of Christmas, get new lights.Ditch the incandescent bulbs for decorating the tree and house,

and use light-emitting diode (LED) lights. In addition to using less energy than conventional bulbs, LED lights last longer and do not get hot so children won’t burn their fingers and the tree won’t get singed. On the eighth day of Christmas, give green gifts.Help make the rest of the year environmentally friendly as

well, and give those on the Christmas list useful green items as gifts. Whether it is Burt’s Bees lip balm or Method hand soap, eco-friendly products are useful and good for the earth, and feel decadent at the same time.On the ninth day of Christmas, make a donation pile.Instead of throwing out old items that are being replaced during

the holidays, donate them. From cell phones to winter coats, someone else probably needs it and the landfill does not.On the tenth day of Christmas, re-use holiday cards. In addition to getting back in touch with friends and family and

providing table decorations, holiday cards can be recycled for the following year as name tags, place cards, or for gift cards. Cut out the pictures and put them away with the rest of the holiday decorations. Or use them with children for collages and decorating. On the eleventh day of Christmas, buy local.Whether it’s holiday crafts or local eggs, supporting local

producers is a win-win for everyone. Local farmers have fresh meats and produce, and transporting supplies over a short distance burns significantly less oil and supports the local economy. On the twelfth day of Christmas, plan a jolly earth-friendly new

year.Enjoy the Christmas holiday and think about ways to celebrate

integrate green practices beyond the holiday season and into every day life.

12 Days of Green Christmas

Some of these energy-saving tips may seem obvious, but they can make a big difference when it comes to reducing your fuel bills. By setting your heating to the right temperature, you can keep your home warm and lower your bills. Your main living room should be around 18–21°C (64–70°F), and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F). Above this and you may be wasting money; below this and you may be risking your health. Set your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up.

If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room throughout the day and your bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. Heating your home safely is really important. Remember to get your heating system checked regularly, and keep your home well ventilated. If you have open fires make sure they are properly ventilated. Use safety guards and don’t hang your washing near the open flames. If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom at night, always keep a window and the door open. Use your electric blanket as

instructed and get it tested every three years. Remember never to use an electric blanket and a hot water bottle together. Switch your appliances (such as TVs and microwaves) off rather than leaving them on standby. Do not use a gas cooker or oven to heat your home – it is inefficient and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping the heat inInsulating your home not only helps to keep you warm and healthy, but it will also help to keep your heating costs down. Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors. Make sure that your loft has at least 10–11 inches (270mm) of insulation. Any home with 4 inches (100mm) or less should have it topped up. If you have wall cavities, make sure that they are insulated too. Insulate your hot water cylinder and pipes. Draw your curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside your rooms. Make sure that your radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture. For more information on installing insulation and to find an approved National Insulation Association (NIA) installer in your area, call the enquiry line on 08451 63 63 63 or visit www.nationalinsulationassociation.org.uk Carbon monoxide poisoningIncorrectly installed, poorly maintained or poorly ventilated cooking and heating appliances which burn carbon containing fuels can give off carbon monoxide – a poisonous gas which you can’t see, smell or taste but which kills around 50 people a year in England and Wales. Low levels of carbon monoxide can cause serious harm to your health if breathed in over a long time. Have your cooking and heating appliances which burn carbon containing fuels, flues and chimneys serviced at least once a year by a suitably trained, reputable, registered engineer.

Your top tips for keeping warm and well

1 Get financial support. There are grants, benefits and sources of advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills. It’s worthwhile claiming all the benefits you are entitled to.

2 Keep warm. By setting your heating to the right temperature (18–21°C or 64–70°F), you can keep your home warm and your bills as low as possible.

3 Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. Try to make sure that you have hot meals and drinks regularly throughout the day.

4 Get your flu jab if you are aged 65 or over, pregnant, have certain medical conditions, live in a residential or nursing home, or are the main carer for an older or disabled person.

5 Look after yourself and check on older neighbours or relatives to make sure they are safe, warm and well. Layer your clothing and wear well-gripping shoes if you need to go outside.

6 Have your heating and cooking appliances checked – carbon monoxide is a killer.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE THIS FESTIVE SEASON

Police in Scotland are giving their clearest ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ message yet this festive season and pledging to use ev-ery means at their disposal to track down those who fail to heed the warnings.

The basic message from the country’s senior officers is that while they support any plan to reduce the drink drive limit those who plan to get behind the wheel should not drink any alcohol.

The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) is backing a four week campaign starting on 3 December 2012 which will target those who drive under the influence of al-cohol or drugs.

Across Scotland officers in marked and unmarked vehicles will be on the lookout for of-fenders as will all officers who are on patrol in their local areas. Information and intelligence will be gathered on possible trouble spots and potential drink or drug drivers.

Police are urging the public to help the scourge of drink and

drug driving by reporting sus-pected offenders to the police or Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.

The Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland are sup-porting ACPOS annual festive drink and drug drive campaign. A television and radio adver-tising campaign is being aired from 3 December to emphasise the consequences of drink driv-ing by underlining the message that ‘if you choose to drink and drive, you choose to lose your licence.’

Deputy Chief Constable Tom Ewing from Fife Constabulary, who speaks on road policing matters for ACPOS said:

“Throughout my career, I have found it astonishing that people are prepared to risk not only the serious consequences of losing their licence but also the threat to life and limb by taking to the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Last year we saw 7445 people charged with being over the limit which is a simply unacceptable figure.

We will use every means at our disposal to track down those who drive after taking al-cohol or drugs and with our law enforcement partners, will en-sure that they face the conse-quences. That is likely to mean a fine, loss of driving licence for at least a year and for repeat offenders and those who give a high reading the chance of los-ing their vehicle.

Many serious crashes happen as a result of drivers drinking or taking drugs and as many as one in nine road deaths is re-lated to a drink or drug driver. That is simply not acceptable and we must work together to end the scourge of drink and drug driving. ACPOS fully sup-ports the idea of reducing the limit for drink driving which has been the subject of recent con-sultation but would stress that our clear advice remains that no alcohol or drugs should ever be taken before driving a vehicle.”

Officers in the North and East of the city and East Dunbarton-shire will be playing their part in the nationwide initiative with pro active teams of traffic of-ficers seeking out those who flout this law. Inspector Gary Price from the Divisional Road Policing Unit said, “I have out-lined the importance we place on detecting drink and drug drivers over the last few weeks. In the last week alone we de-tected nine individuals who were drunk behind the wheel. I find this staggering despite the coverage that this issue has re-ceived in the press.

As I have previously stated, my officers within the Divisional Road Policing Unit are commit-ted to tackling those who show an utter disregard for the safety of road users by driving under

the influence of drink or drugs. More traffic officers will be on patrol throughout the month of December and will be actively seeking those who continue to break the law and put them-selves and others at risk.”

EAST END POLICE OFFI-CERS HONOURED

Two east end police officers were honoured by receiving the Chief Constables High Commen-dation for bravery this week at the Strathclyde Police Force Training Centre in Jackton, East Kilbride.

Constables Ashley Gemmel and Gordon Pollock, uniformed officers attached to the Com-munity Policing Team at London Road Police Office.

On the evening of Saturday 18th June 2011, PC’s Gemmel and Pollock responded to a call that a male in possession of a knife had attended at a door of a property on Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow and threatened the oc-cupants following a row in a lo-cal bar.

When the officers attended they found the male, and ob-served him in possession of what appeared to be a gun in the waste band of his trousers.

With no thought for their own safety, the officers quickly disarmed the male and arrested him.

The weapon was later found to be a 9mm self loading pistol with 8 live rounds of ammuni-tion in the magazine, one live round in the chamber ready to fire. The weapon was also fit-ted with a silencer.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Mawson, Divisional Command-er for Glasgow North, East & East Dunbartsonshire said “I am immensely proud of Ashley and Gordon for the outstand-ingly courageous actions they took that night in Bridgeton in disarming a serious criminal, in possession of what can only be described as a lethal weapon.

The raw courage, dedication and commitment of these two young, unarmed officers cannot be underestimated and I am ex-tremely proud of them.

They have been awarded the Chief Constables High Com-mendation for their actions that night, which seen a deadly weapon taken off the streets and undoubtedly – lives saved.

Each one of those nine bul-lets was potentially a life lost.

We talk about Keeping Peo-ple Safe as the basis of what we do in Strathclyde Police. It is of-ficers like these who take this message to the streets of our communities and make them safer places for us all to live and work there”.

The 36 year old male ar-rested for this incident was sentenced at the High Court to 5 years imprisonment.

PROTESTERS TARGET GAMES SPONSOR Protesters last week occu-pied the offices of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the centre of town last week to demand that one of the major sponsors of the upcoming games be removed as sponsors con-sidering the alleged treat-ment of people who they claim are being forced off benefits. The Citizens United group made their way into the building in Albion Street and called for Atos, the com-pany that assess whether people are fit to work or to claim sickness or invalidity benefits to stand down as sponsors of the Games. The controversial company has been in the news recently as being the assessing me-diators who determine who should or shouldn’t receive benefits while off work and in many cases have ruled that persons suffering from long-term illnesses are re-ally fit for work. One young-ster Kieran McArdle (13) re-cently told how his father Brian, 57, collapsed and died the day after his disability benefits were stopped. He had been assessed by Atos and deemed “fit for work”. The youngster said a previ-ous stroke on Boxing Day last year had caused a blood clot on Brian’s brain. He was left paralysed down his left side, unable to speak prop-erly, blind in one eye and barely able to eat or dress but he was still summoned to an Atos “work capabil-ity assessment” as part of the Government’s drive to cut billions from the wel-fare bill. Kieran says he had another stroke days before his appointment because of

stress, but was still deter-mined to attend. A month later, his father Brian, got a letter telling him he would lose his disability benefits on September 26. Kieran said his dad’s health went rapidly downhill. He believes it was the constant worry about how he would survive without the cash he needed, robbed Brian of the will to live. The day after his benefits were stopped, Brian collapsed and died in the street. He had suf-fered a heart attack. One of the protesters in the Al-bion Street offices claimed Atos had only ten doctors to cover the North East of Eng-land and Scotland to make all the assessments and he claimed they are not quali-fied to assess anyone with a mental health problem.’ The group claim Atos has a 7 year contract worth more than £1 billion. ‘This is hap-pening while the people of Glasgow are suffering and are being victimised by the same company and are be-ing treated in a shocking and inhuman way during the as-sessments.’ The Common-wealth Games 2014 senior press officer, Matthew Wil-liams, told our reporter, ‘We are very proud to have glob-al IT experts Atos as part of Glasgow 2014’s sponsor family. The company has demonstrated unwavering commitment to driving for-ward the Paralympic move-ment by providing dedicated practical support to athletes for the last ten years. We are confident in the positive role Atos will play in helping us deliver an athlete centred and sports focused Com-monwealth Games.”

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. Victo

ria Crosses have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St. Jo

hnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short s

pace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

BONNYTON THISTLE 5, BAILLIESTON JUNIORS 1. UNDER-19 Scottish Cup holders Bonnyton moved into the fifth round of this season’s tourney at Stewarton Sports Centre. Despite the final scoreline, Baillieston gave a great account of themselves, and for a second half 20 minute spell Bonnyton were hanging on before finishing strongly. Jordan Muir put Thistle ahead after 9 minutes, and Sam McCloskey made it two after 15 minutes. Baillieston troubled the homesters from set-pieces, and when they could not defend a corner kick Dale Dickson scored in 35 minutes. Bonnyton weathered some excellent play from Baillieston, and McCloskey scored on the hour mark, and completed his hat-trick ten minutes from time. In between David Shedden added Bonnyton’s fourth goal after 70 minutes. Although conceding five goals, Baillieston Juniors goalkeeper Stephen Thomson played to a high standard.

W A L L A C E T O U N SPORTING AFC (AYR) 1, BROOMHOUSE 4. TWO goals from Mark McGeough and Darren Hogan inside 21 minutes gave ‘House a great start. Good link-up play between Sean Cairney and Darren Hogan allowed Jason MacKay in for No 3. Wallacetoun missed a 49th minute penalty kick. Gary Rae, who could have scored earlier, made amends with a fourth goal 12 minutes from time. The hosts hit their consolation in this Scottish Amateur Cup 2nd Round clash on 88 minutes.ARBROATH SPORTING CLUB 2, BROOMHOUSE 1. THIRD round of the Scottish Amateur Cup. ‘House never really recovered from conceding an early goal, and fell further behind after 36 minutes. The visitors missed numerous chances and only managed to pull one goal back through Jason MacKay five minutes from time.B R O O M H O U S E 15, CAMBRIA 0. BROOMHOUSE returned to Greater Glasgow

COLVILLE Park County Club West of Scotland Amateur Cup Second Round. Broomhouse could not have asked for a worse start after conceding the opening goal in 90 seconds! However, the homesters really turned the cup-tie around with second half goals from Jason MacKay, Craig Scott, Gary Rae and Mark McGeough. Arthurlie’s second goal came from the penalty spot in 88 minutes. BROOMHOUSE held junior side, GLASGOW PERTHSHIRE, to a 3-3 draw in their Monday evening floodlight friendly at Greenfield. The home side took a 2-0 lead, and went three up before ‘Shire brought on several regulars and salvaged a draw.

CITY star Jane Ross receives the SWF Players’ Player of the Year award from Scottish Sun Sports Editor Iain King. In 2012, Jane was part of City’s historic treble-winning squad which reached the last 32 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, and was the only Scottish-based player picked for the GB Olympic Squad, where she was a reserve. Jane Ross, who joined Glasgow City F.C. as a 16-year-old, finished top scorer with 40 goals in only 27 starts this season. Photograph kindly supplied by Stephen Kennedy at SWFitba.

SCOTS GOALS TAME AUSSIE TOURISTSTWO wins and a draw - that was the outcome of results from players registered with the Scottish Youth Football Association against Australian touring opposition at Toryglen Regional Football Centre. A full afternoon of indoor action produced double-figure scorelines at Under-15 and Under-16 national level, while the West Region Under-17s were only denied glory by a late penalty kick. Nine West-based players were part of the Under-15 set-up - including Celtic Boys’ Club trio Lloyd Fallon, Conor Bell and Elliott McKenzie. South Queensland’s youngest age group trailed 3-0 at half-time following counters from Euan Stark, Jamie Crawford and Jamie Dorrans. The second 45 minutes proved even busier for Aussie goalkeeper Alex White, who despite conceding another eight goals pulled off several great saves. Man of the Match Jamie Crawford and Bradley Sinclair completed individual hat-tricks in the 11-0 win.

Intersport Football Festival, Hungary. Jack Dyer made the long-awaited 70th minute breakthrough after Steven Oates challenged the Melbourne goalkeeper to a Justo Bernado cross.

Amid a clutch of substitutions, Marc Wylie lashed home the West second goal following good build-up play from David Fisher. To their credit, Melbourne were far from finished. Defensive indecision allowed them to reduce
