In a city containing the highest percentage of non-drivers in the U.K. they plan to move the facil- ity three miles to the east, to an area where the nearest bus stop is twenty minute walk away through an industrial estate. There has been no consultation with the public, nor with elected officials, yet postmen have been told the move is scheduled for January. The current sorting office is exceptionally well used, and for those without online access it’s difficult enough to arrange a redelivery as it is. The alternative of delivering to a local post office for a fee of £1.50 is seen by many as an attempt to raise company profits via the poorest people in Scotland. Enquiries to the Royal Mail from elected officials have been met with vague statements regarding how plans are in the very early stages, and no final decision has yet been made. Talking with indi- vidual postmen, though, provides a very different story as they have been informed that the closure of the Cubie Street sorting office will occur on January 23rd 2013. None of the alternative services offered are acceptable. The most efficient alternative is to arrange re-delivery of missed packages via Royal Mail’s website, yet this is not accessible to a significant percentage of the local popula- tion. Phoning for a redelivery currently requires exceptional pa- tience before the call is answered, and waiting times are hardly likely to improve with the new sorting office covering a vast swathe of Glasgow. Why should anyone have to pay a further £1.50 for a package on which postage has already been paid to be redelivered to a local sorting office? And the current opt out rather than opt in plan for packages to be left with neigh- bours will lead to vast numbers of items going missing. Online petitions and posters can be accessed through the Face- book page set up for this cam- paign there will be on the street presences in locations throughout the east end this weekend includ- ing Cubie Street Sorting Office, outside Duke Street Post Office and Bridgeton Cross for the next two Saturdays. We want Royal Mail to balance service with profits and keep a local facility open. Community Council members from Dennis- toun, Bridgeton & Dalmarnock, Calton as well as Community or- ganisations such the Calton Area Association have all come to- gether with elected members from across all parties to tackle this issues. Please link into this page, and sign the petition at https://www. facebook.com/SOSOCubieSt , and if at all possible attend the public meeting at Bridgeton Community Learning Centre, 68 Dale Street, Bridgeton at 1.30pm on Saturday November 17th. Local Labour Councillor Yvonne Kucuk praised the efforts of all the Community Councils and vol- untary organisations involved and in particular highlighted the Den- nistoun Community Council mem- bers for their hard work and ef- forts from designing the posters, petitions and the Facebook page. “ The response from local resi- dents has been amazing, people like Stephen Birrell the Chair of Dennistoun Community Council have taken annual leave and used up valuable holiday time to at- tend these planning meetings all in order to protect a vital service to their community. Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team.

Tel: 0141 548 4756THE children at Lamlash Nursery in Cranhill were distraught following their return after the October week holiday when they discovered that their Gar-den which they tended and played in was destroyed by thoughtless vandals. There can be no excuse for this wanton damage which resulted in large wooden planters trashed, the insect world shed which the children had built smashed to smithereens, a compost bin set on fire, wooden chairs and tables attacked and bulbs which were being planted by the kids strewn all over the place. Headteacher Margot Sagan told the Re-Gen how the children couldn’t understand why anyone would cause such carnage and they kept saying, “Why did the bad people do this to our Garden?” How can anyone explain something like that to three and four year olds is beyond compre-hension. A couple of good things have happened to restore faith in that the Governor of nearby Barlinnie Prison has promised to get volunteers to rebuild the Garden and members of Strathclyde Fire

Mercury, the ruler of Aries’ house of work, will be retrograde for most of November (7th - 27th) drawing attention on some problems that require a deeper look, maybe even a new approach is needed some of the issues troubling you will be related to money, work relationships. It seems you have to do some thinking before speaking!

Professional relationships will be slightly more peaceful than personal ones; the former will also bear important significance. Contracts need to be approached very carefully, Not a good month for starting project, so tie up all loose ends and focus on getting your own house in order too.

In the first part of the month, Mars could make you a bit too aggressive attitude, and retrograde Mercury adds the risk of communications collisions or misunderstandings, On 28th you’ll benefit from a Moon eclipse there might be unexpected things, out of the ordinary, but the final outcome will be positive.

It’s very unlikely that things will go according to plan, this month. Don’t hope for too much and have a plan B at hand! There could be nice surprises too, because the eclipse on the 14th , which will take place in Cancer’s house of love, will be a little more benevolent; The second part of November will bring clarification and decisions!

Communication between partners, exchanges of impressions, shared dreams, wishes or preferences will go more easily. Even if there are some unleashed aspects, the basic intentions will tend towards privacy, stability, home, family. An unexpected event at the end of the month will have a huge effect. The Moon eclipse on the 28th will bring about a truth about situations re friends!

The first part of the month will be one of practicalities. It’s possible that shared interests will revolve around money, career, family, there’ll be a lot of discussions, (verbal or written) within relationships that will be volatile, so try to hold off serious debates until the middle of the month when more harmony, rhythm and passion is apparent.

The charm, sensuality and tendency to express your feelings will draw sentimental opportunities. This will also be supported by your cheerful and optimistic mood; you may socialise more often, and meet a lot of people. The need for interaction and com-munication will be highlighted by a lively, colorful period, favorable to love, marriage, friendship, relationships in general.

You are feeling more nostalgic, romantic even, but your practicalities are rather weak and idealistic than real. It might happen that nothing special occurs, but it also might happen that some things at the discrete, private level take place. A secret or forbidden love? A disappointment that you’ll quietly dwell on? Try to keep it real this month.

In the first part of the month you’ll take an all-out attitude and get ready for great deeds. You want to prove what you’re capable of, but you’ll miss coordination and you might direct your actions wrongly. You don’t have patience either, and neglected details will take their toll, use the strengths of those around you and form a team.

Teamwork, participation in projects involving a lot of people, or one that supports your interests in other ways - all will be highlighted by the Sun’s transit, all can bring you achievements, but they will require careful communication and more care with papers, documents and accurate calculations, so pay attention as they can have financial implications.

This will be a month of action, conquer-ing and fulfillment, not one for long term goals but immediate action. For total suc-cess, you have to prepare your thoughts carefully and allow your inner passion to seduce, persuade, negotiate conditions or reconciliation, depending on the case, because communication is the only one thing that could harm the results.

It won’t be a quiet month but special things usually happen in restless periods, which challenge you, make you compete, force you to take action. All you have to take care of is for your intensions to be honorable, and don’t cause unnecessary conflicts between you and your peers or bosses.

ASSAULT AND ROBBERY– DALMARNOCKDETECTIVES are continuing inquiries and appealing for witnesses following an assault and robbery on a 30 year old man in the Dalmar-nock area of Glasgow on Wednesday 26 October.

Around 6.50pm last Wednesday, the 30 year-old male security guard was work-ing in the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village Build-ing Site when he heard a noise outside his cabin. He went outside to investigate and was confronted by 5 youths who threatened him with a bladed weapon. Three of the youths went into cabin and stole the security guards back pack containing a Sony laptop, his wallet containing bank cards and 2 mobile phones. As they made off the victim chased after them when one of sus-pects picked up a large brick and hit the man on the head. The group then made off onto Belvidere Road.

The security guard made his way to a nearby house where he contacted police. He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he was treated for a head injury and later released.

The suspects are all

described as white, Scottish aged between 14 and 20 years.

2 of the suspects where wearing distinctive balacla-vas which had silver edging around the eyes and mouth. The other three suspects were wearing scarves over their faces. They are all described as wearing black clothing.

Speaking from London Road Police Office Detective Con-stable Ewan Gilmour said:

“We are carrying out ex-tensive inquiries and checking CCTV to trace those respon-sible for this assault and robbery.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was around the Belvidere Avenue area on

Wednesday night and saw a group of youths hanging around the Commonwealth Games site, or saw anyone hanging around the area to contact me.

“I would also ask anyone who has any information which can help the inquiry to contact London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4600. Alternatively you can contact CRIMESTOPPERS ON 0800 555 111 if you prefer to remain anonymous”

YOUNG adults and school-children in North Lanark-shire are being given the opportunity to try their hand at some basic DIY skills through a series of three day introductory painting, decorating and tiling courses. The workshops are being offered by North Lanark-shire Council’s Repairs and Maintenance provider Morrison Scotland and are designed to offer school-children and adults, who are either unemployed or detached from mainstream employment opportunities, the chance to learn some new skills and hopefully encourage them back into

work or education. The first course took place in January 2010 and was a huge suc-cess. Since then Morrison Scotland have welcomed over 500 young adults onto the taster course. More recently Morrison Scotland welcomed another squad of students and the three-day taster formed part of their school work experience. The students soon proved to be expert at tiling and were given the opportunity to assist with tiling an area within Morrison Scotland’s new Marketing Suite at Coatbridge. Willie Docherty, Managing Director of Mor-rison Scotland told the Re-Gen: “We are delighted to

be able to offer these trade taster sessions in partner-ship with North Lanarkshire Council’s Education Depart-ment and Regeneration Services. Morrison Scotland is committed to supporting the local community and through this, we hope we can give school children and young adults some practi-cal experience and equip them with some new skills. We have an established apprenticeship programme and we actively encour-age those participating in the trade taster to apply and begin their first steps onto a career with Morrison Scotland “

POLICE in the East End of Glasgow are this week ap-pealing to parents, teenag-ers and retailers to be alert to a quantity of counterfeit fireworks that have been sold in communities in the Shettleston and Easter-house areas.

It is suspected that these pyrotechnics are being ille-gally imported into the UK from other countries where stringent safety checks are not in place.

On the 16th October a 13 year old youth was found in possession of 4 x “Banger Fireworks” in Dalilea Drive, Easterhouse. These were similar to the dangerous Fireworks being imported illegally which have injured persons using them within the Strathclyde area. The youth stated that he had purchased the Fireworks lo-cally from a male about 5ft 9in tall, average build, wear-ing a dark coloured jacket and a brown coloured Deer Stalkers hat. The Fireworks were being sold £2.50 for 10.

The device and packaging were described as having a green fuse with dull red labelling with black writing

stating – DO NOT HOLD, see pack-age for instruc-tions, BLACK CAT LTD, BURTON ON TRENT, DE13 9HE, COMPLIES WITH BS 7114:2:88, Made in P.R.C.

These bangers are also without a cap on the op-posite end of the fuse making them more vol-atile. Inspector John Gorm-lie, Community Inspector for Easterhouse and Baillieston said “We are appealing to members of the community to be alert to the dangers that come with these de-vices.

Fireworks are dangerous when misused at the best of times – even more so when they are not made to the correct standard in the first place!

What we have seen in this instance is an unregulated individual, selling dangerous fireworks to underage chil-dren. The situation doesn’t get much more dangerous.

My officers are follow-ing up lines of enquiry in an effort to identify this man. We would ask the commu-

nity in the area of Dalilea Drive to think about this description and contact us with any information you may have regarding the man’s identity”.

In a further incident on18th October a youth was charged in Avenue End Road with throwing a lit firework at a motor cyclist filling the carriageway with smoke and debris.

It was only after the smoke cleared that it be-came apparent to the youth that the motor cyclist was an on duty police officer and part of the motor cycle unit. The youth was thereafter charged with the offence under the Explosives Act and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal.

Inspector Gormlie added “Over the coming days, my officers will be on the street with trading standards of-ficers. We will be visiting places where fireworks are sold – to make sure they are complying with the law – and that the stock is of the correct safety standards.

We are trying to keep people safe over the fire-works period – and ask that the community do what they can to help us achieve this.”

GRAHAM Higgins and John McNamee two local lads from the East End have recently opened “The Carport” (next door to the Texaco Filling Station) on Baillieston Road at

Sandyhills. Graham and John have between them, more than 50 years sales and after sales experience within the motor industry. Both commented that “We aim to offer only

select used cars, chosen and prepared to the high-est standards, and still be more than competitive in price”. Please feel free to drop in and visit or view our stock at www.thecarport.co.uk

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

“The Sun Has Got It’s Hat On” For Chris and LaurenLAST Saturday afternoon although very cold, was the perfect day for local man Chris Lafferty as he married his long-term partner Lauren Munro at a ceremony in St Francis of Assisi Church in Baillieston. Chris is well known in the area as “The Ice Cream man” and his van is instantly recognised by its signature tune, “The Sun Has Got Its Hat On” as he travels from stop to stop. Chris is a native of Baillieston having lived in Moss Path since he was born. His wedding to Lauren marks the end of an era in St Francis of Assisi church as Reverand

Father Vivian Hayes retires after serving his parishioners for 35 years. Father Hayes has been in the Priesthood for 57 years and last Sunday Bishop Joseph Devine went along to St

Francis of Assisi to celebrate Mass and folllowing a short speech by Vivian’s close friend Tom Boyd, Frank and Margaret Meechan presented Father Hayes with a token of the congregation’s appreciation for his time at Baillieston. Here’s wishing Father Hayes a long and happy retirement.

The annual remembrance two minutes silence takes place at 11.00 O’clock on the 11th day of the 11th month as if any of us need reminding. Respect for all those who have perished or been se-verely injured in the conflicts our servicemen and women have been involved in over the years should come natu-rally to us all but because of perceived things that have taken place it seems that some people who come to Britain from countries all over the world to set up home, still want to decry our armed services by holding rallies and marches against our troops. The 11th of November should always be observed for what it stands for. In Britain, although two minutes of silence are observed on 11th

November itself, the main observance is on the second Sunday of November, remem-brance Sunday. Ceremonies are held at local war memorials, usually organized by local branches of the Royal British Legion, an association for ex-servicemen. Typically, poppy wreaths are laid by representatives of the crown, the armed forces, and local civic leaders, as well as by local organizations includ-ing ex-servicemen organi-zations, Cadet Forces, The Scouts, Guides, Boys’ Brigade, and the Salvation Army. The start and end of the silence is often also marked by the firing of a cannon. A minute’s or two minutes’ silence is also frequently incorporated

into church services. Further wreath-laying ceremonies are observed at most war memo-rials across the UK at 11 a.m. On the 11th of November, led by the Royal British Legion. The beginning and end of the two minutes’ silence is often marked in large towns and cit-ies by the firing of ceremonial cannon and many employers and businesses invite their staff and customers to ob-serve the two minutes’ silence at 11:00 a.m. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning,We will remember them”.

Recently the Re-Gen ran a competition for Primary Schools in the area to see if someone could come up with a new logo design for a local company, Cart Construction. Due to the vast amount of entries we received it has taken us until now to select a winner but company owner Alan Williamson was delighted, not only by the amount of entries but also by the standard of designs that were submitted. Eventually the winner was

selected and it was Jodie Clark of Swinton Primary School who sent in her excellent logo. Last week Alan Williamson took time out from his busy schedule to visit the school and present Jodie with her prize of a crisp £50, which she was delighted with. Jodie is seen here with Depute Head Gwen Sinclair and Mr Williamson receiving her well earned prize. Well Done Jodie.

GHA today announced plans to build eight new homes which will dramatically reduce bills for heating and hot water. The new homes are the next stage in an innovative project which began with four proto-types of the Glasgow House constructed in a partnership be-tween GHA and City Building. Now GHA is incorporating im-portant elements of the Glasgow House, which features high lev-els of insulation, low energy run-ning costs and simple technol-ogy, into a 100-home new-build development in Carntyne. And with heating and hot wa-ter bills expected to come to around £280 a year – or just over £5 a week – based on today’s prices, tenants will save energy and benefit from lower heating and hot water bills. An average 3-bedroom home typically costs around £1100 per year to heat. A total of eight Glasgow Houses will be part of a GHA new-build development in Marfield Street, Carntyne, which is expected to start in March next year. City Building is the contractor on the development. GHA – which is a partner in Sus-tainable Glasgow – is committed to helping reduce fuel poverty and cut carbon emissions. The new energy efficient homes are part of that drive. Further testing will be carried out to determine which design

features best maximise energy savings that provide affordable warmth for tenants. The homes will be incorporat-ed into future GHA new-builds based on the findings of this pi-lot phase. The new-build homes will be completely insulated – even un-der the foundations – and will feature the main elements of the Glasgow House, including sun spaces, solar panels and very high levels of air tightness to minimise heat loss. Sun spaces, which capture the energy of the sun are the most highly visible aspect of the Glasgow House and are what differentiates it from other ‘eco’ homes which feature solar pan-els and air tightness. Tenants will be advised on how best to benefit from the special features of their homes. Margaret Wallace, chair of the committee of GHA’s local office, Keystone, said: “In a time of ever-increasing fuel bills, these innovative homes will help families save energy and enjoy a better quality of life. “As tenants will be able to keep more money in their pockets, it means we are tack-ling fuel poverty head-on and reducing the impact on the en-vironment. “Helping reduce carbon emis-sions also helps us play a key role in building a sustainable Glasgow.”

Subject to final planning per-mission, a total of 100 homes will be built in Marfield Street. The development will also fea-ture an amenity block for older tenants, made up of 43 two-bedroom flats, eight of which are built to wheelchair stan-dard. There will also be 22 flats, in-cluding two built to wheelchair standard, and 27 houses, one of which will be built to wheel-chair standard. Graham Paterson, Executive

Director of City Building, said: “We’re delighted to be work-ing in partnership with GHA on this contract, which will allow

us to further develop and test the concepts we so successfully demonstrated in the original Glasgow House prototype.

“We’re really looking forward to helping deliver exciting new, energy-efficient housing for the people of Glasgow.”

First Tickets Now on sale for Velodrome

“Get on yer bike”

Glasgow makes its debut on the interna-tional stage from 16th-18th November 2012. It will be the first major event to be staged at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velo-drome, which forms part of the £113mil-lion Commonwealth Arena.

Tickets went on sale to British Cycling members last week and sold out within a few hours. Tickets are now on sale to the general public and can be purchased via www.ticketmaster.co.uk. Spectators are encouraged to book their tickets early to avoid disappointment as high demand is expected.

British Cycling is hoping that the chance for cycling fans, new and old, to see the world’s best cyclists in action on home soil once again will continue to in-spire participation in the sport across the nation as well as provide GB athletes with more top level international competition in this country.

2013 will see the action continue in Manchester with the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup round that takes place from 19th-20th April 2013.This will be the third major international BMX event to take place in the UK in the space of 12 months, following May’s World Championships and the Olympic Games. The competition will take place at Manchester’s National BMX Centre, which itself was built as part of the London Olympic Games legacy and has provided Team GB’s BMX athletes with a world class training and competition facil-ity since it opened a year ago.

Jonny Clay, Cycle Sport and Membership Director at British Cycling commented:

“Hosting events of this calibre demon-strates how committed we are to devel-opment of the sport and shows howwell we’re able to combine infrastructure and events to drive growth in the sport at all levels.

“The Track World Cup in Glasgow is the first opportunity for people to see the GB c y - cling

team in international action after the Olympic Games and the event promises to be a great spectacle for cycling fans as our GB athletes prepare for the 2014 Com-monwealth Games and set off on the road to Rio 2016.”

“We’re delighted to also be bringing the first round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup to Manchester and welcome the best international BMX racing back to the UK for the third time in 12 months, con-tinuing the legacy left by this year’s UCI BMX World Cham-pionships in Birmingham and the London Olympic Games.”

Simon Morton, Director of Major Events at UK Sport, said:

“We are delighted the UK has been given the opportuni-ty to host these exciting sports thanks to National Lottery funding. It has been clearly demonstrated with events such as the Track Cycling World Cup, which UK Sport has supported since 2004, how events like this can support both growth and performance ambitions.

“The Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow will be one of the world’s best venues for Track Cycling, and our fans are in for a real treat as they see the British team begin their journey towards Rio 2016. This will be the first of many events that UK Sport’s National Lottery funded programme will help to stage in the UK after London 2012.”

“We are fully committed to building a strong and sustainable legacy from host-ing London 2012 and have increased our investment to £4.5million a year to bring world class sport like the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics and UCI BMX Super-cross World Cup to this country.

“Our programme has already secured 10 World and European Championships for the UK in the last 18 months and wewill continue to work hard to bring world class

sport here” Chair of Glasgow Life and the Ex-

ecutive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said:

“The London 2012 Olympic Games cap-tured the imagination of the nation, with the sensational performances of the Team GB cycling team among the real highlights. The atmosphere at the Olympic velodrome

was incredible and we can’t wait to get a feel for that when the Track World Cup comes to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in November.

“Glasgow is one of the world’s leading sporting cities in part thanks to our world-class events programme, which is growing all the time as we continue to invest in the very best facilities. And as we look

ahead to the Glasgow 2014 Common-wealth Games, the Track World Cup will give people the chance to see just what they can expect when the world’s top cy-clists go for gold in our new velodrome.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer

for EventScotland said: “Scotland is the perfect stage for events,

and with the opening of the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome we can proudly add the sport of track cycling to our extensive portfolio of major international events.

Following the success of Sir Chris and his fellow Team GB athletes at the Olympics, the excitement and enthusiasm for the World Cup event in Glasgow is going to be huge.”

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure, said:

“The UCI BMX Super-cross World Cup is sure to be spectacular and it will be phenomenal to see

The National BMX Centre host its first glob-al event.

“Since opening, the BMX centre has proved incredibly popular with both local residents and elite competitors. Two athletes based at the centre, Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips, have recently represented the country in the Olympics

and I’m sure their example along with the BMX Supercross World Cup will inspire even more people to give the sport a go.”

“The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup shows once again that Manchester is a world-class sporting destination and it’s a very welcome addition to the exciting programme of events we have lined up for 2013.”

CITY CROWNED PREMIER CHAMPIONSGLASGOW CITY F.C. have won a record-breaking sixth successive Scottish Women’s Premier League championship - with three games to spare. Less than a week after their disappointing last 32 exit from the UEFA Women’s Champions League against Fortuna Hjorring (Denmark), City clinched another title - that’s seven in eight seasons - with a 2-0 victory against Celtic. Former City player and now Club Manager Laura Montgomery said: “I think people believe it is easy, but it has if anything been harder to retain the title year after year. “Winning the domestic league and playing the Champions League is what drives these players on. “The only disappointment is failing to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League once again.” Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black admitted: “Over the two legs it has been our performance in the first half of the first leg (City lost 2-1 at Petershill Park) that has cost

us. However, the better team has gone out of the competition. “I think the girls have done their country proud. They are all still young and will benefit from this.” Glasgow City knew they had to defeat Fortuna by two clear goals at the Hjorring Stadium to go through, and Jane Ross produced their best first half effort with a 12th minute shot that hit the post. Emma Mitchell’s pace and trickery caused problems for the hosts all night, while Danish ‘keeper Maria Christensen denied the Scottish champions with a string of second half saves. Substitute Leanne Ross had one effort brilliantly turned aside and late on Emma Mitchell’s left foot shot produced another save low down from Christensen. City bounced back quickly from their European hangover,

It’s almost that time of year again when people do crazy things all in the name of a great cause.

Yes it’s the BBC Children in Need appeal when we all sit up till about 2-00am in the morning to find out just what the overall total will be when the TV Extrava-ganza finally comes to an end.

It is one of those nights when just about everyone looks to their heart and digs into their purse or wallet to try and donate what we can afford for

those a lot less fortunate than us. BBC Children in Need is the main charity around this time when we as Scots get involved and over the years Scotland has contributed vast amounts of money not only to help kids all over the world but also right here in our own country. This year some of the things planned are Go Bear Face Day on the 9th of November when women (and some men) are asked to get sponsored as they hit the streets without wear-ing make-up, (that should cause a few queer looks in the community I would

think). There is a Na-tional 5 a-side tournament planned where teams are sponsored to play, culmi-nating in a National Final later on (details are on the Children in Need Website) and of course the release of the official Children in Need single by Girl’s Aloud (out on the 18th of November).

These are “Official” events that are planned but need-less to say loads of folk will come up with their own crazy ideas to raise as much money as they can for this great cause. You can get sponsored for just about

anything (legal that is) that you come up with and if you can’t think of anything you can log into the Children in Need website to order a pack which is crammed full of great ideas.

Although we have encoun-tered an economic depres-sion recently the people of this area are noted for their generosity so why not get involved and do your bit for the kids. You not only will be raising money for the children you will also enjoy doing it either individually or as part of a team with our friends.

The new Eastgate building

will house the staff of Glasgow Community Safety Services but will also transform the area as a whole as part of the “Commonwealth Games” corridor. When we heard last year from Dawn Director Paul O’Donnell that the site would be ready to welcome the new residents this month, we thought he was a little optimistic but true to his word the development is about to be handed over for occupation. Eastgate is certainly a reflection, (with its Glass Frontage), of just how far the East End is progressing and continues to progress in the transformation of the whole area and thanks must go to the contribution of the Dawn Construction Group for a lot of the major improvements. Working in Partnership with Clyde Gateway, Glasgow City Council, GCSS and Aviva Investors, Dawn Construction have taken a good look at the East End and their design team have come up with some fantastic ideas which can only compliment the vision that Clyde Gateway have for the area. The development at Eastgate has already created employment for many construction workers from this area plus transformed the lives of the young apprentices who were recruited and who from being on the scrapheap are now in full-time employment. Cabinet Minister

for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, Alex Neil MSP took a trip along to the Eastgate Development mid-way through its construction and met some of the local residents who were involved in the project. Mr. Neil was more than impressed with what he saw on-site and praised the lay-out and design of the new office block. Whilst there, he was shown around by Ian Manson (Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway) who introduced him to some

of the local dignitaries whose efforts were very instrumental in attracting companies such as Dawn Construction into the area. One of the local councillors George Redmond, told the Re-Gen, “ The opening of the Eastgate development is a tremendous boost for the East End as a whole as it already has provided employment during the construction phase and with around 500 workers moving in due to the 20 year lease between Glasgow Community

Safety Services and Glasgow City Council, the future looks bright for the East End.” The building itself is a 65,000 square feet open plan office development incorporating a number of sustainable features including, solar control, natural ventilation, lighting control energy efficient plant control systems and IT infrastructure to support CCTV. Ian Manson told the Re-Gen, “Eastgate is a very significant project for us as it brings the first 500 permanent

office jobs to the area and lays down a marker for what we are capable of delivering. I also think that everyone will be very pleasantly surprised by the sheer quality of Eastgate. It is as impressive as anything you will find in the city centre and has been constructed to the very highest environmental and efficiency saving standards. With the development only three minutes journey time from the city centre, this demonstrates just how great a

This Nursery was formally opened by The lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Sadie Docherty on 18 October 2012. The regeneration project has retained an historic city landmark by converting the former great eastern hotel into 60 modern flats. The Great Eastern was built in the 1840s, originally as a cotton mill, and its conversion highlights Glasgow’s commitment to retain its heritage for future generations. In addition, the project has seen 48 new flats being built with funding from the City Council and Milnbank Housing Association as well as the provision of a new state of the art children’s nursery. Overall investment in the site is in excess of £15m The Nursery itself has many innovative features and has been built to the highest sustainable standards. This means that future running costs within the Nursery will be low and this will give children a healthy and clean environment for their early learning. The Nursery building

was funded by Grants from the Big Lottery and Climate Challenge Fund. As well as nursery provi-sion for over 50 children, the building also contains a train-ing room and IT suite which has been equipped through a Grant from the Scottish Government’s Wider Role Fund. This means that local people who want a career in childcare will be able to gain valuable work experience in the Nursery. This development shows what can be achieved where there is a genuine partnership between the local community, city council and forward think-ing organisations that are keen to invest in innovative projects. Hopefully, local parents will benefit from being able to enrol their children in a cost effective and well equipped

facility that also provides real employment opportunities for local people. The final stages of the Registration process are being completed and the aim is for the Nursery to begin opera-tions in mid-November. For further details contact Carbon Footprints Nursery on 548-6500.

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

As part of the Re-Gen’s campaign to raise awareness about the UK Government’s changes to the Welfare Ben-efit system, the following article provides information on changes to housing benefit and the fact that payments covering rent charges will be reduced if a home has more bedrooms than are needed for those living in the house. This decision has been termed the “bedroom tax”. These proposed changes to housing benefit will take ef-fect from April 2013. From this date, if you live in a hous-ing association home and you have one or more “spare” bedrooms, your housing payment benefit will be reduced.

This could affect you:• If you are 16 to 61 years old• Even if you only get a small amount of housing benefit – for example, if you are working• Even if you are sick or disabled

You won’t be affected if:• You live in a one bedroom property• You or your partner receive pension credits

What is a “spare” BedroomUnder the new rules, if you have more bedrooms than the Government says you need. You will lose part of your housing benefit.

You will be allocated one bedroom for:• Each adult couple• Any person aged 16 or over• Two children of the same sex under the age of 16• Two children under the age of 10 regardless of their sex• Any other child• A carer if you or your partner need overnight care

It does not matter how the “spare” bedroom is used, the new rules apply even if:• You or your partner need to sleep apart because of a medical condition• The main residence of your children is another address, but you have a spare room for when they stay with you

What happens if I have a “spare” bedroomIf you have one “spare” bedroom your housing benefit will be cut by 14% of the rent you pay every week. If you have two or more spare bedrooms you will lose 25%. If your benefit is cut you will have to pay your landlord the difference between your housing benefit and your rent.

FIREWORKS will explode sky-wards as the Prodigy’s ap-propriately entitled anthem Firestarter resounds across Glasgow Green, kick starting Scotland’s biggest fireworks display on Monday 5 Novem-ber. Fans of the Glasgow 2018 Youth Olympic Games Facebook page were asked to help select the musical score to accompany the 20 minute spectacular. The most popular suggestions have been complied and the 8 track mash-up, which will culminate with Katy Perry’s aptly named hit song Firework, is set to delight the crowd. This year’s fireworks theme will celebrate Glasgow’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The bid’s fans will also create Scot-land’s biggest piece of interac-tive “crowd art” during the pre-show entertainment. Anyone keen to see their face up in lights is being encouraged to tweet #backourbid with a mes-sage of support for Glasgow 2018. A clever app designed by creative agency Dog Digital will see fans’ twitter profile picture added to a giant photo mo-saic. The complete image will be revealed on the big screens at the end of the evening for all to see. One tweet will win a VIP Fireworks package and be

the first person to have their image on screen on 5 Novem-ber. Lord Provost of Glasgow, Councillor Sadie Docherty, said: “Once again we are expecting thousands of people at Glasgow Green for Scotland’s biggest or-ganised fireworks display. The annual event is one of the most popular free events that we host and this year promises to be extra special as we con-tinue to promote the city’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. “So not only will revel-lers get the chance to see some of Glasgow’s best landmarks il-luminated as fireworks race into the sky but those who back the bid will see themselves on the big screen as part of a specially created Glasgow 2018 Youth Olympic Games mosaic. It will be a night to remember.” Crawford Tait, Technical Direc-tor of Dog Digital said, “Creating a mosaic that is crowd-sourced from Twitter and Instagram is exciting, cutting edge and really reflects Glasgow 2018’s wider goal of bringing young people together. Dog Digital’s technol-ogy powers real-time social media for live events, and we are delighted to be able to add to the content on the screens at Glasgow Fireworks.” Glasgow 2018 Bid Director, Paul Bush OBE, said: “We are delighted to

be part of what is undoubtedly one of the most popular an-nual events in Glasgow. Young people are at the very heart of our bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and it is fantas-tic that we will be able to share this night with so many of them. The bid has already had a fan-tastic response from the public and being part of Glasgow’s Fireworks can only add to this.” Young people were quick to offer suggestions for their fa-vourite track to accompany the fireworks display. This enthusi-asm and willingness to get in-volved are only two of the many qualities Scottish people are renowned for across the globe. These will be key assets in bid-ding for the games and I am delighted that yet again our young people have demonstrated them by getting involved in Scotland’s biggest fireworks event.” Around 50,000 peo-ple are expected to enjoy the fireworks extravaganza. The family show starts at 5.30pm when the funfair opens. Radio presenters Romeo and Knoxy will take

to the stage at 6.30pm to warm up the crowd with some pre-show entertainment, before the display lights up the sky from 7.30pm. During the display more than 3,000 fireworks will explode, setting the city ablaze with colour and providing a unique backdrop to some of Glasgow’s most iconic landmarks, includ-ing the People’s Palace and Doulton Fountain. Event organ-isers Glasgow Life are asking those planning on heading to the Green to wrap up warm and leave their own fireworks at home to ensure a great night is had by all.

KENNY SEE’S DISRUPTION FOR HIMSELFThe Scottish Justice Secretary spent a night with police in and around the Barrowland area of the Calton recently to see for himself what local residents have had to endure for years, young under-age drinkers from outwith the place wander-ing around waiting to get into live concerts in the Barrowland venue. Kenny MacAskill went out with Strathclyde Police’s Alpha Bravo team as they patrolled Glasgow city centre and the East End on Saturday night. Between 8.00pm and 3.00am, 360 incidents were recorded across the city. One of them, an assault, was actually witnessed by Mr MacAskill. The visit comes as ministers are planning legislation to make it an offence to supply alcohol to under-18s in a public place. Statistics show 75% of young offenders were drunk at the time of their crime and it is hoped reducing access to alcohol will reduce the numbers of young people in prison. After the patrol, the Justice Secretary said what he had seen proved there was a need for the new law. He said: “Well it’s real, and it’s tangible. It’s not just speaking to the officers, it was seeing the clear distress from a victim from a serious assault. So these things are important, it’s important that I do go out there and see what the officers have to contend with. “Youngsters are gather-

ing where they’re getting access to bottles of Buckfast, bottles of Vodka or whatever. We’ve got laws that make it so they wouldn’t be supplied in a licensed premise. “What we’ve got to do is make sure that they don’t get access in an unlicensed premise whether that’s a public park or a street corner.” Chief Inspector Simon Wright from Strathclyde Police said it is hard to make sure underage drinkers do not get access to alcohol out-with licensed premises. He said: “We clearly do a lot of work with the licensing trade, who are responsible. They know the limitations, and we clear-ly work with them to ensure that when they’re inside these venues and they’re underage, they have no access to alcohol. “However, before they come into town, before they come to these premises, depending on who they are, where they are, they may have access to drink.” The Scottish Government intend to launch a consultation on the new law shortly ahead of bring-ing forward legislation to intro-duce it next year. What the Re-Gen doesn’t understand is if we have a law that bans the sale of alcohol to under 18’s right now – why then the need for legisla-tion or any other new laws. The present laws should be enforced stringently and offenders given tougher penalties than at the present.

The Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS), co-ordinated a weekend of activity last week-end to high-light the dangers associated with using the roads during the winter months. Chief Superintendent Derek Robertson, who leads on casu-alty reduction for ACPOS Road Policing Business Area, told the Re-Gen,“The Scottish weather is notoriously unpredictable and drivers can encounter a wide variety of different driving con-ditions during a single journey. As was highlighted during the extreme weather encountered in recent years, effective plan-ning plays a huge part in ev-eryone getting safely to their destination. “This campaign is not solely directed at motorists, but every-one using our roads. Unfortu-nately, I know from experience that pedestrians, cyclists and joggers are involved in serious road accidents during the winter months. “Police forces through-out the country will be working with various road safety groups and organisations to offer free advice to road users. Local me-dia should be checked for infor-mation. “As the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, motorists should ensure that their vehicles are given a winter check and are properly maintained. “For cyclists, visibility is a key issue and they should ensure that they can be seen. Joggers and pedestrians are encour-aged to wear high visibility garments and think carefully about the routes chosen. “I would encourage everyone to follow these simple safety guidelines which could prevent accidents and injury”.

Road Safety Advice – Winter ConditionsDuring the winter months, road conditions can be extremely dif-ficult and dangerous. Motorists need to pay extra attention and be prepared to adapt to chang-ing conditions. Even the most experienced motorists can find themselves getting into difficulties when the roads are icy. While it is usual to think about snow and ice during the winter months, there are a number of other factors which road users should take into account before considering or commencing a journey. For example, high winds, heavy rain and fog all affect

journey times and should be considered prior to setting out. The grip of a vehicle may be re-duced if mud, leaves and other debris are on the road surface. The sun sitting lower in the sky can be particularly difficult, es-pecially if combined with a dirty windscreen. Our advice is to consider if your journey is absolutely nec-essary taking into account the prevailing weather and road conditions and if you must drive then ensure that you and your car are adequately prepared for the journey ahead.

Before you set off on your journey:• It is vitally important to make sure your vehicle is adequately maintained and that brakes, tyres, lights, batteries, wind-screens and wiper blades are in good condition.• Tyres are the only point of contact with the road and if they are worn or incorrectly in-flated then they have less grip and can significantly increase stopping distances in the event of an emergency.• Tyres should also be checked for bulges, cuts or tears which will weaken the tyre and potentially lead to a collision. The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm but this is the legal min-imum and it must be remem-bered that tyres perform more efficiently with a greater depth of tread.• Windows including the wind-screen should be demisted and fully cleared of any frost, snow or ice.• Check that wiper blades are not worn and are capable of clearing the screen correctly.•Check brakes, lights, oil and washer fluid levels (add winter screen wash to your washer bottle to stop the water from freezing.)• Carry water and de-icer in the car with you.• Carry a few essentials in the car at all times, a warm winter jacket preferably a High Vis-ibility one could be a life saver, other items to consider are a torch, first aid box, a blanket, sturdy boots or Wellingtons and even some warm clothes.

If you must travel in wintry weather remember to:• Slow down and leave plenty of room to stop. You should al-low at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front.• Brake gently to avoid skid-

ding. If your wheels lock, ease off the brakes.• Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motor-ists and always clear all ice and snow off the car windows be-fore setting out.• Drive slowly on snow in the highest gear possible.• Do not assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.•Visibility is often reduced be-cause of fog, rain, spray, hail or snow. Remember to ensure that you use dipped headlights in peri-ods of reduced visibility. Fog lights can only be used when visibility is seriously reduced to less than 100 metres but must be switched off if visibility im-proves.

If you get stuck in snow:• Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.• Use a light touch on the accel-erator to ease your car out.• Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.• Pour sand, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels – or even use your floor mats – to help get traction.• If you must leave your car, ar-range to have it recovered as soon as possible. If you think it is in a place that may pose a danger to other road users, call the police to let them know.

Pedestrians, Joggers, Cyclists.• Cyclists should ensure that they have suitable lights on their bicycles, they wear re-flective fluorescent clothing and a cycle helmet.• Pedestrians and Joggers should where possible wear High Visibility clothing or brightly coloured clothing; this will allow other road users to see you earlier.• Everyone using our roads should avoid any distraction devices and that includes using mobile phones and listening to excessively loud music through ear phones.• Further advice for joggers can be found on the Jog Scotland website.• Children should also wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing as they will generally be walking to school during darkness or reduced visibility.

GLASGOW CRIME BLITZ KEEPS THE PRESSURE ON CRIMINALS Police in the east end of Glasgow this week have kept the pressure on offenders as part of the hard hitting Operation Myriad. During the month of October, uniformed and plain clothes officers working with partners from Glasgow City Council, VOSA, Customs and others, have been on the streets in greater numbers and have been working hard to deal with the issues that communities tell them cause the greatest concern. The operations carried out during this time have ranged from drug raids, road blocks and licensed premises being inspected, to dangerous individuals

being arrested and recalled to prison. Entering it’s fifth week running, Chief Superintendent Wayne Mawson, Divisional Commander of Glasgow North, East & East Dunbartonshire division said “Over the past four weeks, we have seen tremendous results from the operations we have ran. It is testament to the commitment of my officers and the will of residents in the East End who want safer communities to live and work within, that have told us who causes the greatest harm, and have allowed us to address the concerns they have set out for us.” Across the East End and North of the city, police have arrested 905 persons for a range of crimes that include drug dealing, sexual crimes, violence, disorder, antisocial

behaviour and theft. Those arrested or charged with antisocial behaviour offences at the lower end of the scale have been fined £27, 600 for offences such as minor vandalism, street drinking and urinating in public. Those who have disregard for the safety of us all on the road network have been fined nearly £40, 000, with fines attracting a total of 1227 penalty points – or put simply: 103 people losing their driving licence!Recovered drugs including Heroin & Cannabis with a street value of £935,00 – Drugs destined to bring misery to our communities.Licensed premises such as pubs and off licences have been inspected a total of 2627 times in that period – to ensure that alcohol is being sold responsibly; and not to those who are: Unlicensed, not complying

with their licence, to drunk people and under-agers.34 drug dealers have been arrested. 160 people have been charged with possessing drugs. We have taken 35 vehicles off the road that have been uninsured. 15, 000 people have been stopped and searched – with over 1500 of them being found in possession of drugs or weapons. We have made 521 visits to people’s homes who are on curfews ordered by the court – to ensure they are indoors - where they should be!Police officers have attended at 548 homes of offenders we have identified as those who cause the greatest harm within our communities. Officers have engaged with them, directed them to support services and warned them that we are more than aware of who they are and what they do.Chief Superintendent Mawson added “We think it’s important that the communities of the east end know that we listen to what you tell us. What these statistics tell you – is that we have listened, we have acted – we have arrested more people doing the things that pose the greatest risk to you, and cause you the greatest concern”

EASY COME – EASY GO….After police received information about a man on the city’s High Street who had just received a 20 kilo amount of cannabis – officers from the division’s crime team attended with a warrant and caught three men in possession of the consignment worth £24,000. Three men in their 20’s were arrested and held in custody for their appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court on

drug dealing charges. They will face trial at a later date.

DRINK DRIVER CAMPAIGN CONTINUES TO KEEP PEOPLE SAFEPolice in Glasgow North, East & East Dunbartonshire Division have continued their long running campaign against people driving whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Inspector Gary Price, the officer in command of the division’s road policing group said “In the last three months, we have arrested 74 people in this area for drink and drug driving offences. That is a shocking figure – and it is quite clear that after 25 years of drink driving campaigns on national television; that people have either still not got the message – or have no regard for the damage they could cause. For each of the 74 people we have caught – there will be a minimum of a year’s driving ban, jobs lost and financial difficulties associated with it. You could say that with the real possibility of someone being killed or injured by a drink or drug driver – that the figure equated to 74 lives saved on our roads over this period. In the coming weeks and months, we intend to increase our activity around detecting those who continually flout the law in such a dangerous way. If any one knows of anyone who drives under the influence or of a particular licensed premises that its common to see people driving away – where it’s suspected they’re drunk; we want to hear from you either on 0141 532 4600 or by phoning crimestoppers; where you do not have to give your name.”

The cost of crime in our communities goes far beyond an actual sum of money. The fear and hardship faced by our older people in particular has a serious effect on how people live day to day.

So thanks to legislation introduced by Labour in The Scottish Parliament, when criminals are caught, their ill-gotten gains such as money, property and cars can be confiscated with the proceeds of the sale going back into the community. This is the main aim of what is now called Cashback for Communities.

So when I asked the Justice Secretary Kenny MacKaskill to give me an assurance

that money taken back from criminals in our communities in the North East of Glasgow actually gets spent in the North East of Glasgow. I was hugely disappointed with his response that he does not consider it necessary to make sure that money recovered in a certain community will be spent there.

I have always maintained that the area most blighted by drugs and other forms of crime should be getting the most support, and that the principle of Cashback for Communities is that the community that has been blighted by the criminal will get the benefits.

So by ignoring what our communities actually

want, the SNP Edinburgh Government has once again shown how disconnected they are to what people’s feelings are in the North East of Glasgow. Maybe if Kenny MacKaskill wanted to come with me to meet some community activists in my constituency, he could say to them that he doesn’t believe that money recovered in the community doesn’t need to be spent to benefit that community?

If you would like to get in touch with me regarding this or any other issue that I can assist with then do not hesitate to call my office on 0141 564 1364 or email me on [email protected]

Last week I chaired the ‘GP’s at the Deep End’ event at Lightburn Hospi-tal.

This is a vital time for our area, as the Tories programme of cuts start to bite and the impact of austerity is felt across our communities. The event brought together GP’s working in some of the poorest areas in Scotland, to discuss, engage and analyse some the findings in their recent report.

The report makes shocking read-ing, as it sheds light on how the UK Government’s spending cuts have af-fected the ability of GP’s across the country to deliver the care vulnerable patients should expect to receive. Al-though GP’s are determined to con-tinue delivering the best possible stan-dards of care, it is only natural they are concerned about the direction the aus-terity measures will take them.

As well as the Tory’s plans for Wel-

fare Reform, changes to working tax credits mean that over 25,000 house-holds in the central belt of Glasgow will no longer entitled to tax credits. This impacts on everything.

A central concern for GP’s, that I ex-pect to be raised at the meeting, is the number of patients coming to them with deteriorating or chronic mental health issues. As the detrimental ef-fects of drugs, alcohol and worsening mental health start to take hold, the physical problems of the patient can become less and less of a priority.

This week figures showed that around 24,000 Scottish families are thought to be severely disadvan-taged, with my own city Glasgow the worst affected. It is incredible that in this day and age , one in ten families in Glasgow are facing severe disad-vantage, three times the national average.

It is clear that too many people are suffering hardship as a result of the Tory Government’s damaging agenda.

Changes to the benefit system are having a profound impact on patients health and workload as an endless cycle of appeals, reductions and as-sessments impact on the health of people in difficult areas. It is difficult to accept that when people are strug-gling to provide meals for their fami-lies the Tories should continue down this route of punishing the very peo-ple who deserve it least. This is hav-ing a profound effect on their health and I find that troubling.

Many of my constituent’s and peo-ple across the city are struggling. Be it from low incomes, overcrowding or lack of opportunity, there is a sense in many areas that the Government does not understand their concerns. We cannot allow the people in our community to pay the price of this Governments folly.

LAST week saw the Scottish Parliament help launch the 2012 Poppy Scotland appeal, and I was delighted to be there to support the campaign.

Poppy Scotland is the only charity officially recognised by the Scottish Parliament and every year it is invited to launch its appeal at Holyrood. This says a lot about the importance of this campaign to our public life, and this was reflected in the huge turnout of MSPs, veterans and supporters at the event. For more than 90 years the

wearing of poppies has been a powerful demonstration of our appreciation towards those who have been willing to put their life on the line for our country. However, the appeal is much more than being just symbolic, with millions of pounds raised each year to support ex-servicemen and women and their families in Scotland.

With Glasgow marking Remembrance Sunday with a service in George Square, it is important to remember that our city has contributed a huge amount to the British

armed forces, and continues to do so today. With our servicemen and women still in action in a number of conflicts around the globe, the support of charities like Poppy Scotland is vital to our veterans’ communities in Glasgow and beyond. I hope you will join me in supporting this year’s campaign.

As ever, if you wish to contact me about any issue please do not hesitate to email me on [email protected] or call my constituency office on 0141 357 2739.

VICTORIA PARK 0, TYNECASTLE A.F.C. 7 HAMILTON Palace was the venue for Tynecastle’s first away victory of the season in the Strathclyde Saturday Morning Football League Premier Division. Paul McCarthy lashed home the opening goal from a free kick, and before half-time the visitors led 3-0 thanks to other efforts from James Jordan and Kevin Taylor. The second half belonged to one-time Stranraer striker Jamie Cochrane, who netted FOUR times and took his season’s tally to 17 goals.TYNECASTLE A.F.C. 5, WHITEINCH 2. WEST of Scotland Amateur Cup second round at Lochend. After 15 minutes James Jordan squared to Jamie Cochrane, who opened the scoring. Whiteinch equalised following a long throw-in which was not dealt with by the defence. Jordan restored the homesters’ advantage when he bulleted home a Brian Paxton corner. A deft finish from a tight angle by Cochrane made it 3-1, but the visitors were far from finished, and converted a penalty kick prior to half-time. On the resumption, Kevin Taylor lashed home a free kick “special”, and the same player converted a penalty kick after Brian Paxton had been fouled.POSTAL UNITED A.F.C. 13, CUMBERNAULD CLYDE 0. post. Just before the half hour mark Hibernian went behind. Jane Ross combined with Leanne Ross on the right flank and crossed for Emma Mitchell to head past Lynn from around eight yards. Hibernian offered their first genuine attempt on goal via Susan Fairlie after 38 minutes, but soon afterwards City made it 2-0 when Emma Mitchell hit a sweet left foot shot in off the post. Mitchell’s pace and trickery set-up a second half opening for Crichton, who headed wide. Lynn denied the City winger her hat-trick, and Jane Ross went close before the champions killed the cup-tie as a contest. Jo Love timed her run perfectly to get on the end

of a Danica Dalziel cross and headed beyond ‘keeper Lynn for goal No 3. Said Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black: “I need to congratulate the girls and all the staff on being one step away from completing yet another remarkable season. It would have been an easier night for us if we had taken our chances early on, but three goals, a clean sheet and a Cup final makes me happy.” Waiting for Glasgow City in the final are Forfar Farmington, who edged out Hamilton Accies 2-1 after extra-time in the other semi-final (outdoors) at Ravenscraig.
