RCCC Students Claim Honors at National Conference

Two RCCC students earned recognition at the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) National Leadership Conference, held July 8-13 at Nashville, Tenn. Cheryl Craft of China Grove placed fourth in the PBL national Justice Administration competition. Amy Johnson of Gold Hill finished sixth in the same competition. Craft and Johnson earned the privilege of attending the conference as North Carolina and RCCC delegates by winning or placing second in state-level leadership competitions in April. PBL co-advisors Martha Cranford, an RCCC faculty member, and Sandra Horne, a college staff member, also attended the national conference. Craft, a former Philip Morris employee who has returned to school, said, “RCCC’s co-op opportunities and knowledgeable instructors have enhanced my learning experience and prepared me for such competitions as the PBL nationals.” Johnson added, “Thanks to all of the criminal justice instructors at RCCC. Without them I would not have been

able to do as well as I did at the state and national Phi Beta Lambda conferences.” At the conference, the students and their advisors attended a number of workshops, including business etiquette, the art of negotiation, time management and goal setting, leadership, and money management. Conference exhibitors and sponsors included GEICO, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Among the 1,600 attendees were delegates from UCLA, UC-Berkley, University of Arizona, Mesa State

College, Florida International University, Kansas State University, University of Wisconsin, University of Virginia, Campbell University, Montreat College, Asheville-Buncombe Technical College, Wake Technical College, Durham Technical College, Pfeiffer College, and Appalachian State University. Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda Inc., is a nonprofit student business organization with nearly a quarter-million members and advisers in 12,000 chartered middle school, high school and college

chapters worldwide. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. The association is headquartered in Reston, Va., outside Washington, D.C.

Register Now for Fall Classes Semester Starts Aug. 16

The registration period for fall semester classes at RCCC continues, but new students need to apply soon. The college anticipates a high, per-haps even a record-setting, demand for classes. On-line fall semester registration runs through July 29. RCCC will offer on-campus assistance Aug. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the North and

South Campus. For more information, see the RCCC website at: www.rowan-cabarrus.edu/registration/, or call x3593. Students who register by July 29 must pay their tuition and fees by Aug. 3. The North Carolina State Legislature recently raised community college tuition rates. Tuition for North Carolina residents is now $56.50 per credit hour. Out-of-state students must

pay $248.50 per credit hour. New students must apply in order to be enrolled. Every prospective student must complete an application on-line at www.rowancabarrus.edu/admissions/, allowing two business days for processing. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 16.

Word of the Week The opening of RCCC’s new facility on the North Carolina Research Campus and the popularity of RCCC’s associate-degree program in biotechnology are fostering increased interest in biotech within our college and larger community. To help us decode what biotech terminology means, the eNews will present a word periodically to help us better understand biotechnology. This week, our biotech term is

Hormone. A hormone is a chemical or protein that acts as a messenger or stimulatory signal, relaying instructions to stop or start certain physiological activities. Hormones are synthesized in one type of cell and then released to direct the function of other cell types. Hormones regulate physiological activities including growth, reproduction, and

homeostasis in vertebrates; and growth, bud dormancy, and leaf shedding in plants. Most vertebrate hormones originate in specialized tissues and are carried to their

targets through the circulation. Among the many mammalian hormones are ACTH, sex hormones, thyroxine, insulin, and epinephrine.
