We were happy to welcome Hiram IISkinny" Hagiwara once again who hopped into L.A. recently from Hilo. Met by Chick Furuye and Bill Miyagi at the airport, plans were made to entertain him during his brief stay in our town. Since he was enroute to San Francisco, time was of essence, out thanks to our cooperative and competent members, mainly Chick and Ken Yoshino, arrangements were made for dinner at the Grand Star in Chinatown, Saturday night, May 17, 1969.

Among those present were: Chick and Matsu" Kenji, Lloyd Seki" Bill and a guest, Roy Kobayashi" Monte" May and Wayne Fujita, Tad and Sue Hashimoto and the Hironakas. We missed the Ben Otsujis and Sat Nakamura who had to cancel out at the last minute due to illness. Needless to say the dinner was delicious, especially the specialty of the house--fish-with-a-sweet-sour sauce. Skinny is no stranger to LA inasmuch as it was just about a year ago that he was here, more or less on business. The fringe benefits are terrific where he is employed as someone remarked.

After dinner and a minimum of speeches, we all went downstairs to listen to the entertainer at the piano bar. Apropos to the occasion, she was a native of the islands so, naturally" sang songs familiar to Skinny and even prevailed upon him to give out with a song or two. After a little persuasion, he got up and rendered a ditty and very well too~

The group then ventured across the way to the Grandview's Buddha Room for a nightcap" at least for same of us oldsters. Alohas were exchanged with Skinny and 'When this reporter left, our guest was still raring to go. These Kanakas real.1y know how to enjoy themselves!

At this writing, in mid-Ma.y, our Pismo Beach venture does not look too promising in that motel accommodations are practically nil since it is a holiday weekend. Howver, sane members are determined to go and

Many many thanks to Sat Nakamura for his untiring efforts in putting this affair over; it is not an easy task to undertake a job like this which would try even an experienced travel agent. More to follow re this affair.

June 10 The long a.waited steak barbecue and clam digging party was a howling success. About h9lf of the members were comfortably sL tuated at t he Arroyo Motel in Arroyo Grande, namely Harry and Fuji Fukasawa and their three daughters; Ken Yoshino and his son; Douglas Tanaka (those Hawaiian shorts made us shived); Tad and Sue Hashimoto and the Hironakas. Thanks to the efforts of Ken, we were able to get these accommodations. We all mana~ to reach Arroyo Grande early Saturday so were able to do some sightseeing and even do a little fishing in Lopez: Lake Q Since the gang was to meet at 5;:00 Ali Sunday, everybody retireq early. We were all at the designated spot on time where we were joined by Tom and Ruth Kasai with their SIln, daughter-in-law and daughter (the la.tter three from Santa Barbara); '.the Monte Fujitas with son Wayne and two guests~ 18ao Yokoyama and Naomi Nishimura, plus their poodle with sweater and all.

It was nice to have among us Mr. and Mrs c Kaz Sato of Pasadena, who made t he long trip wi.. th their three small children, Bob Shigenaka: and son Kevin were also present and luckily had extra clamning forks for us greenhorns (had no idea what these things looked like) plus some tips. Everyone was ac(Counted fo r ex~ept Bill and Aki Miyagi who joined us latero It was quite a sight to see everyone so engrossed in clamming, oblivious to the cold and the waves o The youngsters seemed 'to 'De having a ball, not to mention the adults" Everyone managed to have his limit or came pretty close although most of the clams were not of legal size and thus were put back in the sand, "Honesty is the best policyll; just ask Joe who was approached by the game warcl.en o Some of us were first-timers. like the Hashimotos, but Sue got first prize for the largest claJllSand deservedly so" 'cause she sure was working hard and has the callouses on her hands to prove it.

After cleaning up and checking out of our motel, everyone headed for Grover City Park and the pieee-de-resistance of the whole trip, the STEAK BARBECUE. Ebb and his charming wife Yotsuko were getting things started and watching the proceedings from the start was;

fascinating especially for us amateur chefsG As we were preparing to fID our plates with heaps of steakjl chili beans g green salad and French bread, Chick and Matsu Furuya tir.it'h their son Doug and the latter I s fiancee plus the Ben Otsujis arrived fram L~A.

Needless to say, the food was superb; everyone so busy eating there was ver,y little talking, a compliment indeed to the chef.

During the course of the meal, President Joe Hironaka announced that Bill and AId .tvr.iyagi not only furnished the sodas and beer but also took care of the bill for the entire party. The reason given was that Bill won a flsmall fortune" playing Keno in Las Vegas recrently. Our many thanks to the J.li;}ragis.

Our special guest, Rev. (former Chaplain and su~cessor to Chaplain Yost of the lOOth), George Aki was delayed but did make it a little later with his young son. He stated that he a nd his family love San Luis Obispoj that he has a small congregation consisting of all Caucasians save three Japanese members. He seems very happy with this new assignment and also gave us some interesting facts about the sebool system as well as the prison system and other related subjeats.

Rev. Aki spends one dq a week at the County Hospital to meet and " Italk w:l.th the patients and made a surprising comment about the high rate of ment~ ill people in San Luis Obispo and the surrounding towns, in spite of the fact that the pace is slow in this part of the state as opposed to L.Ao It was a very enlightening e.xij)erien.;re especially for this reporter, meeting and listening to Rev" An and it ~s hpped that he will keep up the good work thereo

About 2~OO o'clock the party broke up, everyone looked well f ed and satisfied and prepared for the long trek home, only 200 or so ~les yonder. Goodbyes and thanks to the Shigenakas were extended, thus ending a most enjoyable holiday weekend.

The Able Chapter baseball players weren!t. satisfied with last year as co-champs of the F.Le Turner Memorial Invitational Softball League so this year, the boys went all-out to get

the championship. Well! All this came true when, first, our sponsor Hanoa Finane'e Co. MAUl CHAPTER NEWS

Maui Chapter hosted about 30 visitors between Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 8th. The Honolulu C Chapter

members came in late Friday afternoon. Maui members were at the Kahului Airport to transport them to the Wailuku Hotel. After registering, they were taken to the clubhouse for a broiled steak and teriyaki dinner, plus lqts of drinks. Entertainment for the evening was u'live", with Poison Kamimoto as MC. James Oshiro was in fine form and livened up the program tremendously. Johnny Miyagawa, Akira "'Jockeyll Ishikawa, ,Butch and Mrso Arisumi, all contributed with fine rendi tions of popular ballads. IvIaui Chapter President Takashi Kitaoka welcomed t:{l8 HonolUlu friends ,'lith a warm Aloha ,speech. Johnny Miyagawa was in charge of steak night.

The golfers spent Saturday at the Kaanapali course. The rest of the visitors were taken to Haleakala Crater, Makawaog Veterans I Cemetery, Pais., lao Valley, Olowalu petroglyphs, Lahaina Luna's old printing hOWie, Kaanapali, Lahaina Town, Daibutsu at Lahaina Jodo Mission, and the Old Prison where drunken sailors of the whaling ships were locked up for the night long ago.

In the month of April outing, he came up with 4 fishes, then in the May 24 outing - together with 1399 Fishing Club, he was the only lueky one who came thru with an oio o Then on June 14=15, he got himself a 7~ lbs. papio or ulua. Yep~ Since it w a.s Fathers i Day - here i s wishing his .family will come up with a bigger ice box for his Fathers' Day gift.
