INTRODUCTION
The Randy Rubel Collection was donated by Randall Rubel. The collection contains
approximately 1500 items arranged into 45 boxes. Access to this collection may be permitted for
the purposes of personal and scholarly research. The Montgomery County Archives requires that
the following credit line be used in all publications to identify that the image or document used is
from its holdings: Courtesy of the Montgomery County Archives. Specific citation of where the
image or document is located (collection, box, folder, etc.) should be made in an
acknowledgements section, footnote, or bibliography.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Beginning in 2004, Randall “Randy” Rubel donated items in this collection to the
Montgomery County Archives. This collection includes an assortment of papers, books,
magazines, scrapbooks, maps, and photographs. An avid collector, retired firefighter, and Civil
War reenactor, Randy Rubel compiled research documenting the Clarksville Fire Department,
local cemeteries, Civil War, genealogy, and local history (such as the 1937 and 1970s floods).
The collection features items belonging to Rubel relatives, including the Trotter and Rubel
families. The military-related research and personal items reflect the military service of the
Rubel family.
The collection is a rich source of information on local Confederate history. In 1893, the
Forbes Bivouac Memorial Club of Clarksville helped raise funds for a Confederate monument in
Greenwood Cemetery. Members sold a booklet, War Songs of the South as Sung by the Forbes
Bivouac Memorial Club of Clarksville, Tenn. An original copy of this booklet is housed in this
collection. A program from the unveiling on October 25, 1893 as well as an 1893 book further
detail the construction and erection of the Confederate Monument. Other research files and
newspaper clippings show Rubel’s involvement registering local Confederate graves with the
Sons of Confederate Veterans, preserving Fort Defiance, and participating in Civil War
reenactments.
Another highlight of the collection is the 1930s Boy Scout memorabilia. William “Billy”
E. Rubel, father of Randy Rubel, was a dedicated Boy Scout. In 1935, he was chosen to represent
his troop at the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Unfortunately, due to the threat of polio, the 1935
event was canceled. Billy Rubel eventually earned a second opportunity to attend the
rescheduled National Boy Scout Jamboree held in Washington, D.C., from June 30 to July 9,
1937. A newspaper clipping, “Scouts Leave for Jamboree, Are Given Big Send-Off,” discusses
the train journey that Billy Rubel and his fellow scouts embarked on to get to the jamboree.
Correspondence, including postcards and letters, between Billy Rubel and his mother document
the excitement of the trip as well as daily life back home in Clarksville. Photographs taken by
Billy Rubel provide snapshots of the 1937 National Boy Scout Jamboree.
During the processing of this collection, some items were weeded and others moved to
other topical collections. These items included Purple and Gold editions and political
advertisements. Photographs, slides, negatives, and rolls of film are housed in the Archives
