A Minute with Mrs. Messina As we are coming close to the end of Marking Period 2, we are looking forward to introducing a new character trait to focus on for Marking Period 3. However, before we add another trait, let’s look at respect and perseverance one more time. February is Black History Month and as you study this in class you may notice themes of respect and perseverance. These are not only things we can show each day, but we can also look to others for inspiration and examples to strengthen our understanding. Valentine’s Day is also in February and words like kindness and love may be on your mind. These traits and feelings also have been part of our Randolphville Respect Program. The more kindness and love we show to those around us, the more we may feel! World Language : Spanish

¡Hola familia! January was a month full of excitement. We started the new year celebrating El Día de los Reyes Magos (The three Kings Day). We took a 10 hours trip to Europe, visited Spanish speaking country España, (Spain) and danced to flamenco music. We left España , and took a virtual flight to beautiful Chile. Students learned of Chile’s wildlife, beautiful scenarios and the many activities that can be enjoyed in that beautiful South American country. January was also the month for numbers. Students have been singing songs, reciting, identifying, and writing numbers. February will be the month of colors and shapes. They will learn to name preferences of colors and ask friends questions about their favorite colors. Guatemala and Dominican Republic will also be introduced this month. Please make sure your child is ready for Spanish class with a pencil, crayons or colored pencils, and his/her Spanish Workbook . If Spanish workbook is missing, please contact the school office to arrange a pick-up time. Also, there will be a weekly update on World Language at Google Classroom. There will be videos, games and songs aligned with the lesson students are learning each week. We are looking forward to a February with lots more Spanish knowledge — stay tuned!

Reading Tips from Room 28 (Mrs. Vassilatos, M. Ed. & Mrs. Ritchie-Ruta, M.Ed.)

Good readers are active readers. When your child has a difficult time understanding what he or she reads, you can help. Here is a 5th strategy to try:

Figure out what’s important.

We read a variety of texts. Many of those texts contain a lot of information. You can’t remember everything, so you have to prioritize the information you need in order to understand and comprehend each text.

Good readers look for things that help them identify big ideas, and why those ideas are important. When reading with your child, you may use some of the following questions to guide your child’s ability to determine important information from the text.

*What is the big idea? *The most important information is…

*So far I’ve learned … *The author is saying…

*The main idea is similar to…

When you read a story with your child, you may also want to use a “story elements” graphic organizer to keep track of the main characters, where the story is taking place, and the problem and the solution of the story. Please remember that nonfiction texts look different from fiction texts. Nonfiction texts are organized with features like a table of contents, headings, bold print, photographs, and a glossary. Therefore, you would need to use a nonfiction graphic organizer to help your child keep track of the important information gained from reading a nonfiction text.

Handwashing: Keeping Your Family Healthy

Handwashing is an easy, cheap, and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep kids and adults healthy. When your family is healthy, you don’t have to worry about missing school, work, or other activities.

Parents and caretakers play an important role in teaching children to wash their hands. Handwashing can become a lifelong healthy habit if you start teaching it at an early age. Teach kids the !ve easy steps for handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry—and the key times to wash hands, such as after using the bathroom or before eating. You can !nd ways to make it fun, like making up your own handwashing song or turning it into a game.

www.cdc.gov/handwashing

Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults in their lives. When you make handwashing part of your routine, you’re setting an example for your children to follow.

Lead by example

Help your child develop handwashing skills

Page 8: RANDOLPHVILLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2021 The ...

RANDOLPHVILLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2021

Building handwashing skills takes time. At !rst, your child will need regular reminders of how and when to wash hands. It is especially important to remind children to wash their hands after using the bathroom, before eating, after touching pets, after playing outside, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose. But once handwashing becomes a habit and a regular part of your child’s day, they will practice it throughout their lives.

Give frequent reminders

Remember to make handwashing a healthy habit at home, school, and at play!

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol.

Handwashing can prevent

cases of diarrheain1 3

respiratory infections, ɽʠƃǠŔɽŔƃȶȍƎȶɭʋǠơ˫ʠ

in1 5 What if soap and water aren’t available?

Did you know?Baby wipes may make your hands look clean, but they’re not designed to remove germs from your hands. CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water when possible.
