REPORT
DATE – 29.09.2018 TIME– 01:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
VENUE- VIVEKANAND HALL, R.S.P. COLLEGE, JHARIA
TOPIC :- “IS GANDHIJI RELEVANT TODAY”
One day seminar was organized on the topic “is Gandhiji Relevant
Today” dated on 29.09.2018 on the eve of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th Birth
Anniversary in the Vivekanand Hall of R.S.P. College, Jharia. Honourable
Principal, Chief Guest of the day, Professors and a large number of Students
were gathered in the Seminar.
The seminar began with the welcome of the chief guest and afterwards the
portrait of Mahatma Gandhiji was garlanded and a real tribute was paid to
Gandhiji.
Dr. Gagan Kumar Pathak, NSS Programme Officer spoke as a key speaker.
He highlighted the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi in detail. He declared
the distinctive views of Gandhiji as a thinker and as an educationalist. His
“New Talim” and “Basic Education” are highly inspirational and are even
relevant today.
Dr. Pathak further added that the Indian National Movement involved
almost all segments of the Indian Society after 1919. The peasants, tribals,
students, women and labourers became a part of the freedom movement.
Participation of these people transformed the national movement into a
mass movement. Mahatma Gandhi is credited for this transformation. This
phase of freedom movement is, therefore, called the Gandhian Era.
Gandhiji became the most prominent figure by this period. He was born on
2nd October, 1869. His birth place was porbandhar, Gujarat. Gandhiji
studied law in England. He practiced as a lawyer in South Africa for around
20 years. He was married to Kasturba Bai in 1883.
During his practice as a lawyer in South Africa, Gandhiji struggled to
improve the conditions of the poor Indians there. They were treated
inhumanly. In 1894, Gandhiji founded the Natal Indian Congress to fight
against the discrimination of Indians in South Africa. He evolved the
concept of Satyagraha or peaceful non-violent agitation during his struggle
at South Africa.
Gandhiji returned to India in 1915. As a result, a new phase in the
Indian National Movement started. His first involvement in India was for
the cause of the poor peasants of Champaran. It was a small district in Bihar.
He further pin pointed the different Massive Movements launched by
Mahatma Gandhi -
1. Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-1922)
2. Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1934)
3. The Quit India Movement (1942)
Honourable Principal, Dr. J.N. Singh took an oath related to “Swachhata”.
Cleanliness is greater than freedom. It is next to Godliness. All members of
the college under the control of principal took the oath that we should be
clean and we should keep our surroundings neat and clean.
Two speakers Miss Pratusha Kumari and Miss Kakoli Dutta gave harangue
speeches highlighting the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi.
