Grace Collins participated in the first annual Las Vegas, NM PAINT OUT in October. Organ-ized by the Las Vegas Plein Air Group, the Paint Out included a contest to depict buildings in the town that have been used in movie sets. A list of movies and some “take-outs” were shown. A “quick-draw” ( 1 hour) was held on the plaza, and there was even a mystery house artists could paint if they could find it! Prizes were given for the best work in each medium, oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor. Local businesses were involved, giving discounts to participants, and receptions graced with food and wine were held at a local gallery. Some of the local painting sites were Hermit’s Peak, Montezuma Castle, and picturesque local churches. There will be another Paint Out in October, 2013. Grace reports that the cost this year was $20, well worth the lovely drive and pictures taken and painted. Grace Collins Plein Air Painting From the Las Vegas PAINT OUT
The KIVA micro financing project was presented
to our Rainbow meeting in September by Aysha Tur-
tle. Rainbow decided not to start our own KIVA team,
but some of us are interested in joining KIVA as indi-
viduals. To do this go directly to KIVA.org and register
and lend. Or, to become part of Aysha's team, regis-
ter, go to the community spot, look up Albuquerque
CSL. and click JOIN TEAM. Either way will work.
Statement of Purpose
We are a New Mexico-based multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-generational collective organized to support, promote, and encourage all women to pur-sue all expressions of creativity. Our Collective will enhance our creativity and our community by en-riching ourselves with knowledge of one another’s works and the work of artists not in Rainbow Artists. We do not intend our dues or hanging fees to re-strict any woman from membership. Membership is open to those who endorse this statement.
We will continually improve our art, our relationship with one another, and our association with the com-munity. We will keep abreast of exhibits, perform-ance opportunities, contests and grants. Working together, we hope not only to gain financial support and recognition for our individual art forms, but to create projects which benefit our group and our community as a whole.
Our Collective evolves from working together with understanding and friendship. Our strength comes from our multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-generational membership.

How to Make a Sugar Skull
Sugar skulls are brightly colored candies shaped like skulls. Peo-
ple often eat them, just like valentines candy. They remind us that
we, too, will die someday. This is not morbid or sad. Instead. It is
a reminder to enjoy life while we're here.
Ingredients:
2 cups sifted powered sugar
1 egg white
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1/3 cup of corn starch
Food coloring 1 fine paintbrush
Preparation: Mix egg white, syrup and vanilla in a dry bowl. Mix
the sifted powdered sugar into the mixture gradually with your
fingers until it forms a ball. Sprinkle cornstarch on a table or cut-
ting board. Place the mixture on the table and shape it into a smooth ball. Wrap tightly in plastic and chill until ready to use.
(It will keep for several months.)
Shades of Grey New Work by Joan Fenicle In-cluded with 7 other black and white images in a Nov.-Dec. exhibit at Arte de Placitas Gallery.

How to Make Pan de Muerto
Pan de Muerto is a sweet bread shaped like an oval, although it can also be shaped like a person or animal or even a bone!
Thanks to: Luis San Vicente for sharing this receipt in his book: The Festival of Bones
Ingredients:
2 packets of dry yeast
11/2 cups of flour
1 tablespoon of anise seed
1/2 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2cup of water
1/2 cup butter
4eggs
3-41/2 cups of flour
Preparation: Mix all dry ingredients together together except the 3-41/2 cups of flour. Heat, but don’t boil, milk, water. and
butter in a small pan and then add it to the dry mixture. Beat well.
Add the eggs and 1 1/2 cups of the additional flour, little at a time.
Flour a cutting board. Knead the mixture on the cutting board for 9-10 minute, put the dough in a greased bowl and allow
it to rise until it has doubled in size about 1 to 1 1/2 hours at sea level). Punch the dough down and shape it however you
want– as a person, animal, bone, or in an oval shape. Let it rise for another hour.
Bake at 350 F (175 C) for about 40 minutes. After baking, sprinkle it with colored sugar. Decorate with crystallized fruit
or gummy bears.
