FALL—2010 Friends of Rainbow Homes,

Well, it’s time to change the seasons once again. It’s “Pure Michigan!” I have enjoyed listening to the radio commercials about our great State of Michigan. I hope you have enjoyed taking time to walk along our lakes and feel the sand between your toes. Our residents have had the chance more than once this summer to visit the Angevine’s cottage and explore the site around Pointe Betsie. Thank you to Hal, Jeanne & Alexis for graciously lending us the use of your cottage for long relaxing weekends this summer.

The butterflies were a fluttering August 8th as Rainbow Homes hosted our annual Family and Friend’s Picnic. The warm weather with a cool breeze was wonderful. Attendance was over 200 people. All enjoyed hotdogs, fellowship and good conversation.

Thank you to Jim and Ann Welling, Al and Sally Aldrich, Pat Beranek and Jean Smith for assisting during the picnic. Thanks to all the staff that helped with the decorations, set up and cleaned up afterwards.

Welcome Yvette, our 26th resident at Rainbow Homes. Yvette moved from St. John’s were she lived with her sister and family. She enjoys mov-ies, and reading Thomas Clancy books. Yvette likes her new apartment. She is volun-teering at Red Cross Food Bank.

Welcome also to Jason, a PT/Facilitator at Rainbow Homes. Jason is excited to work at Rainbow Homes. He is a father of 4 kids, which includes a set of triplets. Former youth director. Using the experiences of having such a large family - he looks forward to many great experiences with the residents. The guys enjoy having a male around to do “guy stuff” with.

Our Facilitators Tammy, Shirley, Jason,

Danielle, and Karen received their Red Cross Certification.

Residents—Troy & Katie are new em-

ployees at Jackson National Life. They are working in the Mail Room.

Residents—Kevin 1, Kevin 3, Troy

and Chad all played softball for the Mason Blazers Special Olympics. Kevin 2 managed the team. Despite sweltering weather July 18th, their team won first place in their division. Thanks to coaches Carl and Val Merin-dorf and their family for their support.

June was Bowling Banquet time for

the Holt Kiwanis Bowling Program. Residents enjoyed a nice dinner and received trophies. Marci received the most improved plaque.

Danielle was chosen by radio station

WFMK 99.1 in recognition as an out-standing Administrative Assistant on April 21st. She received dinner for two at Outback Steak House as well as a plant. Thanks Danielle for all your hard work.

Our Facilitators have also completed

a staff development independent study modules through Bethesda Institute on the care of persons with disAbilities. This training consists of 44 lessons along with completing a comprehen-sion test at the end of each session.

Rainbow Homes welcomed a visit from 18 Youth Group members of United Brethren Church in

Brooklyn, Michigan. On July 26th this youth group sponsored a work day at Rainbow Homes. They worked alongside the residents to spruce up the yards, trimmed hedges and cleaned yard furniture. I am sure Al our maintenance man was appreciative of their help! The group enjoyed lunch with the residents. After lunch there was a friendly competi-tion of ladder ball and bocce ball. When leaving the group talked about coming back as they enjoyed the time they spent with our residents.

Washington DC

Here WE Come!…. A total of forty nine people including twenty residents, facilitators, as well as family and friends will travel by bus on September 23rd thru the 28th to our nation’s capitol. Residents have raised money through beading necklaces and making cards to sell at craft shows. They also held a Yard Sale at Rainbow Homes and made and sold Strawberry Shortcake at CEI-CMH in June. The travel group also has received several donations from individuals. The residents are spending time at the library getting familiar with the sites and deciding what they want to see. Residents are already talking about possibly going to New York next year!

Information—News—Congratulations!

We sadly say good-bye to Sandy, one of our RH PT/Facilitator’s. We will miss her! We welcome new baby

Libby Ann 8/15/10 at 6 lbs. 5oz & 20”long. She joins two brothers and 4 sisters who are delighted she is finally here.

God bless!

Another new angel has joined the heavenly choir! On June 22, 2010 Pat DeLong, a former resident of Rainbow Homes went home to God. Rainbow Homes was honored to host her memorial service on July 14th. Senior Pastor Rick Stacy from Meridian Chris-tian Church officiated this service. Fifty friends of Pat’s attended, remembering her quick wit and Love of Coffee and Bingo. After honoring Pat, it was off to Pat’s favorite restaurant Applebee’s for lunch. In honor of Pat residents will be purchasing picnic tables.

Knights of Columbus

With grateful hearts we thank the Knights of Columbus Coun-cils in the Lansing Area for their annual contribution from their “Tootsie Roll Drive” for persons with develop-mental disAbilities. Each year on Palm Sunday the Knights of Columbus collect donations from this drive. Donations are given to organizations who work with and support persons with developmental disAbilities. We sincerely thank the Knights for their dedication to this yearly event.

The Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary are very active in our parishes. The next time you see a Knight let them know how much we appreciate what they do!

With the assistance of Consumers Energy Rainbow Homes was able to make 9 or our apartments more energy efficient. We received 5 fluorescent light bulbs per apart-ment along with showerheads, kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators, programmable thermostats and wrapping of hot water heaters. Thank you to Justin Hardesty from Clear Result and Consumers Energy for this FREE service to low-income families.

Through the efforts of Joseph Perrone, a

Rainbow Homes Board Member and employee of Morgan Stanley we received a

Grant for $5,500. Thank you Morgan Stanley for recognizing Rainbow Homes

with this grant. Thank you Joe!

Rainbow Homes was the recipient of a 2010 Grant for $2,667.00 from the Capital Regional Community Foundation for “Capacity Building.” This is our first grant received from the founda-tion. We would like to thank the foundation for recognizing Rainbow Homes and it’s residents and staff. We look towards a wonderful asso-ciation with the Capital Regional Community Foundation. Grant will be awarded in September 2010.

We also need to thank Vicci Knowlton, Grant Specialist from the Diocese of Lansing for helping prepare this grant.
