Raices Gala September 22, 2016

The  Ceiba  Tree  is  indigenous  to  the  Caribbean  and  Latin  America,  with  roots

running   deep   beneath   the   ground,   reinforcing   its   longevity.   NMPRAC

selected   this   symbol   to  honor  prominent  Puerto  Ricans  whose   significant

contributions   have   continued   to   broaden   our   historical   connections   and

pave  the  way  for  Puerto  Rican  Arts  and  Culture.

Lin-‐Manuel  Miranda

Antonio  Martorell

National  Puerto  Rican  Ceiba  Award

Lin-‐Manuel  Miranda  is  an  award-‐winning  composer,  lyricist,  and

performer.  Miranda  wrote  the  music  and  lyrics  for  the  highly

acclaimed  musical  In  the  Heights.  His  most  recent  work,  Hamilton:

The  Musical  was  awarded  the  2016  Pulitzer  Prize  in  Drama  and

received  a  record  breaking  16  Tony  nominations  –  winning  11  Tonys

including  Best  Musical,  Best  Book  and  Best  Score  for  Mr.  Miranda.

Printmaker,  painter,  draftsman,  installation  artist,  stage  and

costume  designer,  writer,  illustrator  and  teacher.    Martorell  is  one  of

the  most  prolific  Puerto  Rican  artists  of  the  late  twentieth  and  early

twenty-‐first  century  and  a  direct  heir  of  the  graphic  tradition

initiated  by  the  master  of  the  island’s  “Fifties  Generation.”

Martorell’s  work  has  been  exhibited  world-‐wide  and  he  has  received

numerous  awards  and  accolades.

Raices Gala September 22, 2016

Last   year   the   Ceiba   Award   recipients   were  renowned   artist   Oscar   Luis   Martinez  (right),  who   has   held   prominent   exhibitions  throughout  the  world  and  holds  an  important  place   in  Chicago’s  mural   history.   The   second  award   went   to   Grammy   Award   Winning,  Gilberto   Santa   Rosa   (left),   better   known   as  our   “Caballero   de   la   Salsa”   (The   Gentleman  of  Salsa).

The  Annual  Raices  Gala  helps  to  raise  the  necessary  funds  for  the  National  Museum  of  Puerto  Rican  Arts  and  Culture  to  continue  to  thrive  as  a  cultural  anchor  in  the  City  of  Chicago  as  well  as  become  the  preferred  destination  for  all  those  wanting  to  learn  about  our  rich  history,  art  and  culture.    As  the  only  self-‐standing  Puerto  Rican  museum  in  the  United  States  our  vision  is  to  collaborate  with  other  institutions  to  harness  the  necessary  resources  in  order  to  expand  our  programming,  exhibits  and  visitor  experience.

With  your  support,  the  National  Museum  of  Puerto  Rican  Arts  and  Culture  can  achieve  our  motto  and  be  a  place  where  preservation  meets  inspiration.

By   sponsoring   our   Raices   Gala,   you   also   have   the  unique   opportunity   to   support   Hispanic   Heritage  Month,  gaining  you  national  exposure  while  supporting  an  exceptional  Latino  organization.

Our   Gala   will   demonstrate   the   richness   of   our   deeply  rooted   arts   and   culture   as   we   enjoy   decadent   Puerto  Rican   cuisine,   artistic   expressions,   live   entertainment  and  the  opportunity  to  hear  from  the  Ceiba  Awardees,  Lin-‐Manuel  Miranda  and  Antonio  Martorell.
