All music of the Orthodox Church is sungunaccompanied, using only the musicalinstrument God himself created: thehuman voice; no organ or otherinstruments of any kind are permitted. Our excuse for interspersing the sectionsof the All Night Vigil with organ music isthreefold: firstly, this concertperformance is being given in anAnglican Church; secondly, this church isblessed with a fine organ; and thirdly, togive the choir ’s voices a rest in whatwould otherwise be more than an hourof continuous singing!

Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor, one of the last greatchampions of the Romantic style ofEuropean classical music.

The fifteen a cappella pieces makingup the All-Night Vigil were written in lessthan two weeks in January and February1915. Rachmaninoff had set the Liturgyof St John Chrysostom in 1910, and aperformance which he conducted in 1914convinced him that he should writeanother and (to him) more satisfactorywork for the Russian Orthodox Church. The All-Night Vigil was an immediatesuccess at its premiere by the MoscowSynodal Choir in 1915, but thesuppression of the Church following the1917 revolution prevented it achievingwide recognition until the 1960s.

It has been praised as Rachmaninoff’sfinest achievement and “the greatestmusical achievement of the RussianOrthodox Church”. It was one ofRachmaninoff ’s two favouritecompositions, along with The Bells, andthe composer requested that one of itsmovements (the fifth) be sung at hisfuneral.

In accordance with Orthodox practice(before composing the Vigil,Rachmaninoff had studied ancient chantunder Stepan Smolensky, to whom hededicated the piece), he based thismusic on traditional chants, movements8, 9, 12, 13 and 14 being based onznamenny chants (traditional ancientRussian Orthodox chants, znamennymeaning “written in signs”), four andfive on ‘Kiev’ chant (a Ukranianvariation of the znamenny style chants),numbers two and fifteen on Greek chantand movements 1, 3, 6, 10, and 11where the chants were, in thecomposer ’s words, ‘consciouscounterfeits’ which he himself invented.

The work is written for a four-partchoir, with a very low bass part. However, in many places there is three, five, six, or eight-part harmony; at onepoint in the seventh movement, thechoir is divided into eleven parts.Movements four and nine each containbrief tenor solos, while movements twoand five feature lengthy solos for altoand tenor, respectively. The fifthmovement has gained notoriety for itsending, in which the low basses mustnegotiate a descending scale that endswith a low B flat (the third B flat belowmiddle C). When Rachmaninoff initiallyplayed this passage through to Kastalskyand Danilin in preparation for the firstperformance, Rachmaninoff recalledthat: “Danilin shook his head, saying,Ra

‘Now where on earth are we to find suchbasses? They are as rare as asparagus atChristmas!’ Nevertheless, he (Danilin)did find them. I knew the voices of mycountrymen…”
