I. Dean’sMessage
ThetwentiethanniversaryofFAU’sHarrietLWilkesHonorsCollege(WHC)willoccurin2020,andasweapproachthatspecialanniversarycelebration,wearepursuingambitiousandexcitinggoals.PresidentKellyhasgivenusthewelcomeandboldchallengeofraisingourenrollmentto800by2020andonto1000by2025.AsakeypartnerintheUniversity’sStrategicPlan,RacetoExcellence,theWHCwillcontributemeaningfullytoFAU’sPillarsandPlatformsthroughtheworkofourtop-notchfacultyandstudents.Reciprocally,theresearchandprogramsoftheadvancingPillarsandPlatformswillattractmoretopstudentstotheWHC.TheRacetoExcellenceisboldandsynergistic.
Theplanhereinlaysoutourstrategiesforgrowth,whichwillprovidemanymorestudentsaccesstotheaffordable,rigorous,transformative,inclusive,andpracticalliberalartsandscienceseducationprovidedbytheWHC.Aswegrow,theWHCwillremainfullycommittedtodevelopingstudents’

II. TheWHC:PastandPresent
Fromthebeginning,FAU’sHarrietL.WilkesHonorsCollege(WHC)hascelebratedthepowerandpracticalityofaliberalartsandscienceseducation.
• TheinauguralDean1hiredfive(5)foundingfacultymembersin1998,andtheyimaginedandimplementedtheidealhonorscurriculum,theframeworkofwhichremainstoday.
• Anadditionaleleven(11)facultymemberswerehiredthatyear,anduponmovingintothenewlycompletedWHCheadquartersontheJohnD.MacArthurCampus,thedoorsoftheWHCopenedtoitsfirstclassofseventy-seven(77)studentsinAugustof1999.
• Soonthereafter,aleadershipgiftfromGeorgeD.Cornellinhonorofhislatewife,HarrietL. Wilkes,establishedthenameoftheCollegeandfundedabuilding2inhername.
• Today,theCollegehasthirty-seven(37)facultymembersand440students.
TheWHCoffersaneducationalexperiencemoretypicalofaneliteprivatecollege,butwiththeaffordabletuitionandadvantagesofapublicresearchuniversity.
• Everycourseseekstobuildcommunicationandcriticalthinkingskillsthroughinteractivedialogue,andwritingisubiquitousacrossthecurriculum.
• Upongraduation,eachstudenthascompletedatleastthreeinterdisciplinary,team-taughtseminarcourses,aninternshiporstudyabroad,andanhonorsthesis,whichdocumentsher/hisindependentresearchprojectsupervisedbyafacultymentor.
• Wecelebrateourstudents’originalscholarshipduringourannual,daylongWHCResearchSymposium,duringwhichstudentsgiveoralorposterpresentations.
• Inthepastdecade,overhalfoftheCollege’sfacultyandstaffmembersreceivedUniversity-wideresearcherand/orscholaroftheyearawards,presidentialleadershipawards,and/orserviceawards,andmanyreceivednationalandinternationalrecognition.
• Ourfacultyismadeupoftopscholars,withdegreesfromprestigiousuniversities,includingBerkeley,Oxford,Brown,UPenn,Vanderbilt,GeorgeMason,UNC,Virginia,andPennState,andtheyaredevotedtoteachingandmentoringundergraduatestudents.
• Ourstudentsconductresearchwithworld-classscientistsatScrippsFlorida,MaxPlanckFloridaInstituteforNeuroscience,FAU’sBrainInstitute,JupiterLifeScienceInitiative,CenterforMolecularBiologyandBiotechnology,andtheWHC.Nearby,FAU’sHarborBranchOceanographicInstituteprovidesinternshipsinmarineandcoastalscience.
• Studentsconcentratinginarts,humanities,andsocialsciencesexhibitinshows,presentatacademicconferences,andexcelinMootCourtandModelUNcompetitions.
• Ourgraduatesaresuccessful,over70%goontograduateandprofessional(especiallymedicineandlaw)programs,includingthoseatColumbia,JohnsHopkins,GeorgeWashington,Harvard,UCLAandYale.Otherstudentstakegoodjobsinresearch,teaching,publicservice,thecorporatesector,orhavestartedtheirownbusinesses.
• Mostofourstudentsgraduatewithlittleornodebt,thusunderscoringthepracticality,affordability,andincomparablevalueofaWHCeducation.
1WilliamP.Mech,thefirstDeanoftheWilkesHonorsCollege,servedfrom1997–2004.2Atthedonor’sbehest,thelowerleveloftheWilkesbuildingincludesauniquecampusasset,adog-trainingfacility,whichhonorstheCornell’sdeeploveofdogs.TheJupiter-TequestaDogCluboperatesthisfacility.

• TheenteringClassof2020hadameanGPAof4.56,anaverageSATscoreof1831(equivalentfortwo-sectionSATis1300),andanaverageACTscoreof28.
• Currently,theCollegeenrollmentis440students:25%underrepresented,22%low-income,10%first-generation,75%FTIC,and25%transfersfromcommunitycollegehonorsprograms.
• Thefour-yearandsix-yeargraduationratesarethehighestintheuniversity:74%and80%,respectively.
• Since2000,twenty-five(25)nationalmeritfinalistshaveattendedtheWHC.
• Lastyear,seventy-seven(77)studentsinternedatFAU’sBrainInstitute,JupiterLifeScienceInitiative,MaxPlanckFloridaInstituteforNeuroscience,ScrippsFloridaResearchInstitute,andFAU’sHarborBranchOceanographicInstitute.

• TheWHCearnsFAU’shighestscoresontheStudentSatisfactionSurveyandtheNationalSurveyofStudentEngagement.
• Over70%ofourgraduatesgoontograduateandprofessionalschools,includingtopprogramssuchasColumbia,JohnsHopkins,GeorgeWashington,Harvard,UCLA,Yale,andFAU.
• Afacultyofthirty-seven(37)full-timemembersyieldsastudent-to-facultyratioof12:1,comparabletoeliteprivateliberalartscollegesandNewCollegeofFlorida,whichisseekinga10:1ratioinitsstrategicplanforenrollmentgrowth.
• TheCollege’sendowmentstandsat~$30M(corpus)plus~$8M(earnings).
• Ninety-fivepercent(95%)ofannualinterestfromearningsontheendowmentgoestostudentscholarships:$1.3Min2016-2017,withatotalannualscholarshipdistributionof$1.6M.

III. PositioningStatement
TheHarrietL.WilkesHonorsCollegeofFAUsetsthestandardforhonorscollegesnationwide.Studentsthriveinanimmersive,interdisciplinaryacademicenvironmentandvibrantcampuslife,andtheybenefitfromunparalleledaccesstoresearchandcollaborativeopportunities.Rigorousscholarship,coupledwiththesupportive,inclusivecampusatmosphereandaffordabletuition,empowersstudentsfromallbackgroundstofindtheirpurposeandsharpentheircompetitiveedgeforwhateverthefutureholds.

Mission
ThemissionoftheWHCistoeducatestudentstothehighestintellectual,experiential,andethicallevels,preparingthemtothriveandcontributewiselytothegeneralwelfareofhumansocietyandtheplanet.
Vision
Bewidelyrecognizedasthenation’spremier,publichonorscollegewithadiverseandflourishingstudentbodyof1,000studentsinvolvedincutting-edgeresearch,communityservice,andintellectualengagementacrosstheliberalartsandsciences.
Goals
1 Increaseenrollmentto800studentsby2020,andto1,000studentsby2025,andfurtherenhancethediversityofourstudentbody.

GrowingtheEnrollment
WeremaincommittedtothemissionofeducatingFlorida’sbrighteststudents,andweseektorecruitastudentbodythatreflectstherichethnic,racial,andculturaldiversityofourstate.Wealsoseektorecruittopstudentsfromacrossthecountryandfromaroundtheworld.Inaddition,theproposedFAUJupiterHighSchoolrepresentsanopportunitytogrowourstudentbodythroughdualenrollmentofexceptionalhighschoolstudents.
