Rabbi Goldberger gives a shiur each Shab-bos afternoon approximately one hour before mincha. The shiur is open to men and women and is in the main shul.

Focus on Chesed This year, 5774, the Focus Project of our

shul will be on chesed. This will involve shiurim and learning about chesed as well as the doing of chesed, which is the main thing. One of the things I’d like to ask of you is to think of some creative and innovative projects we can do as a kehilla. These could be within our shul itself as well as with the community at large here in Baltimore and in Eretz Yisroel.

I’d like for the shul to start some chesed projects for our kids as well, both at the teen level and for younger children. There’s a lot of energy and creativity for us to draw upon to come up with some beautiful chesed endea-vors. Please give it some thought and let me know your ideas. They can be emailed to Reb-betzin Bracha at ggreporting@verizon.net.

More info to follow in the coming weeks. Please let me know any ideas in general you have regarding our new Focus. It’s a work in progress and we’re just beginning.

Dust Off Those Menorahs Soon it will be time to dust off your

menorahs — let us do it for you! The 5774 Tiferes Yisroel Annual Silver, Brass and Bronze Polishing Fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday, October 27.

The polishing team hopes to bring sparkle to your precious cups, candlesticks, menorahs and any other objects ready for a cleaning. We’ve had many satisfied customers in the past, so please participate. All proceeds go directly to the shul.

Hadrash Ve-Haiyun Dor Revi’i Torah Insights on the Weekly

Please say that you are my sister, that it may go well with me for your sake, and that I may live on account of you (Bereishis 12:13).

As Avram approached Egypt he feared that the wicked and immoral people of the land might kill him in an attempt to seize Sarai. Rashi tells us that Avram hid Sarai in a box. To spare himself from harm, he asked Sarai to say that he was his brother. Although Avram later explained in a similar incident with Avi-melech that this was not a lie because she was his niece, and a niece is also called a sister (Bereishis Rashi 20:12), this is not the way the average person interprets these words.

Later we learn about the birth of Yishmael. The first insight that we learn about the rela-tionship between Yishmael and Yitzchak is found later in parshas Vayeira. The posuk says, “Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyp-tian who she had borne to Avraham, mock-ing” (Bereishis 21:9). The Sforno explains that this occurred on the day Avraham made a party in honor of the weaning of Yitzchak. Yishmael claimed that Yitzchak was not truly the son of Avraham but of Avimelech. In response, Sarah demanded that Yishmael be expelled from the home of Avraham.

From this incident we learn about the nature of Yishmael in relation to Yitzchak. Yishmael perpetrated an outrageous lie. He claimed Yitzchak was illegitimate, not the son of Avraham. As ridiculous as it may seem, many people were receptive to his claim.

We must stop and ask, how is it possible that our forefather Avraham raised such a child? Did he not educate him in the ways of truth and honesty? What went wrong?

In our parsha, we learn how Avram asked Sarai to say that she was his sister. Rashi adds that by doing so he would receive gifts in her honor. Indeed, Chazal tell us that Pharaoh himself gave Hagar as a gift to Sarai.

We see that Yishmael came into this world because of the lie that Avram asked Sarai to say. The sequence of events leading to Yish-mael’s birth began with Avram asking Sarai to lie that he was her brother. As a conse-quence, she was taken to pharaoh who was smitten with a plague. After Avram inter-vened, Sarai was returned along with the gift of Hagar. Later Avram married Hagar and begot Yishmael.

It should not surprise us that the nature of Yishmael is to lie. His very existence was the product of a lie. Certainly Avram had noble intentions when he instructed Sarai to say that he was her brother. His life was in danger and his conduct was fully within Torah law. Fur-thermore, far be it from us to fault or question in any way our holy patriarch Avraham. Nevertheless, Avram did ask Sarai to lie.

We may learn from this incident the severity of lying. Even if the law permits us to lie in extenuating circumstances, we must realize that any profit seemingly gained will ultimately bring us no benefit. Until this very day, we suffer greatly because Sarai said that Avram was her brother and not her husband.

Hashem said to Avram, “Go for yourself from your land, from your relatives, and from your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” (Bereishis 12:1)

On the words lech lecha, “go for yourself,” the Midrash writes that we find another in-stance where Hashem tested Avram with these same words. This is found by the Akei-dah: And Hashem said, “Please take your son, your only one, whom you love — Yitzchak and go for yourself to the land of Moriah: bring him up there as an offering upon one of the mountains which I shall tell you.”

The Medrash contrasts these two tests and wonders which was greater. It concludes that the second reference, the Akeidah, was greater because Hashem told him the exact destination, i.e., Har Hamoriah, whereas here Hashem just told Avram to go to the land that He would show him.

What different themes do the two trials represent that leads the Midrash to compare them?

The first trial was for Avraham to leave his hometown. The test of leaving represented Hashem’s desire that Avraham attain spiritual self-perfection, something he could achieve only if he left his hometown, a town infamous for idolatry and false ideologies. He was instructed to go instead to a new land free of any spiritual contamination.

On the other hand, the test of the Akeidah included Yitzchak. Avraham was asked to sacrifice his son on the altar. This symbolizes being asked to elevate his “son” to a level of spiritual perfection.

With regard to these trials, the Midrash asks which is greater. Is it more important to concentrate on one’s own spiritual perfection even at the expense of one’s children or is it more important to focus on one’s children even at the expense of his own spiritual perfection? To this the Medrash concludes that it is more important to concern himself with his children. The children represent the future whereas he represents only the present. With regard to spiritual pursuits, the future always carries more weight.

With this insight we have a new interpretation of the following Gemarah:

If one wishes to be pious let him fulfill the matters of the fathers. (Bava Kamma 30a)

The simple interpretation of this dictum is that one who wishes to be pious should study the matters of the Mesechta that begins with the word “fathers,” namely Mesechta Bava Kamma. This tractate deals with money matters, specifically protecting one’s property from causing damage to others. If one studies and practices these laws he is sure to be pious.

We may suggest a new interpretation. If one wishes to be pious, not only must he attain self-perfection but must also fulfil the matters of the fathers. The word “fathers” is interpreted as the responsibility one has to his children. Specifically, he must instruct and motivate his children to follow in the path of yiras Hashem. If one wishes to be pious it is not enough that he himself attain spiritual perfection in the present but must also guarantee that his children follow in his ways in the future.

With this insight we can also understand another Gemara. The coin that Avraham our father had minted had an old man and an old woman on one side and a young man and a young woman on the other side. (Bava Kama 97b) Rashi explains that the old man and old woman were none other than Avraham and Sarah and the young man and young woman were Yitzchak and Rivkah.

Two points require elucidation. One, the word used for coin by the Gemara

is matbayah. In addition to the simple transla-tion it can also be translated as “a teaching.” We find a similar use in the following Gemar-ah: “The coin which the Chachamim minted with regard to blessings” (Berachos 40b) and “the coin the Chachamim minted with regard to the text of a divorce document” (Gittin 5b).

In both of these Gemaros the word matbayah can be interpreted as teachings. Specifically, the teaching that the Chachamin taught us through the text they instituted in blessings and divorce. Returning to the coin of Avraham we may suggest as follows: When Avraham minted a coin he really issued a teaching to the world.

Two, the images of an old man and old woman on one side and the young man and young woman on the other side represent two generations. The old couple represents the present generation and the young couple represents the new incoming generation.

We can now understand the Midrash as follows: By minting a coin, Avraham taught the world that our goal is to achieve perfection for our generation and an obligation to motivate and influence the younger generation also to attain spiritual perfection. As explained above, the more important of the two sides is the young couple representing the new young generation.

Furlough Gemach In an effort to assist members of the

Baltimore community who may be qualified Federal employees facing extreme short-term financial difficulties as a result of being furloughed, Agudath Israel of Baltimore Gemach, in memory of the Singer and Blatt families, has announced the formation of a fund specifically for this purpose. This fund is being sponsored by Seven Mile Market.

The Gemach will provide short-term loans to those qualified, and the loan will be handled in an expedited way.

A loan of up to $1,000 will be given to those Federal workers who sign a loan agreement with one guarantor. Repayment will start after the shutdown has ended. Any furloughed Federal employees interested should contact Tzvi Hefter at (410) 764-3913.

Saving and Investing for Twentysomethings (and Older

and Younger) On Sunday evening, October 20, at 8 pm,

Jay Taffel will lead a discussion about the importance of saving and investing money when you are younger. (So IY”H you'll have something when you’re older.)

We will talk about the power of compound interest, what exactly are stocks, ETFs and mutual funds, and the different types of investment and retirement accounts that are available.

If you know nothing about investing, then this discussion is for you. The talk is geared for post-seminary and post-yeshiva young adults, but all are welcome. We will meet in the Nancy Taffel Annex. There will be no solicitations or selling of anything.

Gimmel Elul: How to Visit the Sick

Rabbi Prof. Michael Zvi Nehorai recounted: When Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah Kook was hospitalized in Jerusalem’s Sha’arei

Tzedek Hospital, suffering from intense pain in his legs, I went to visit him. The rabbi was moaning from the great pain. As a student who felt very

close to him, it was difficult for me to witness his distress. When I saw his pain and heard his groans, I also groaned.

A month after Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah was released from the hospital and returned to teach at the yeshiva, the rabbi approached me.

“Don’t you think it is time you learned the laws of bikur cholim, how one should visit the sick?”

I didn’t understand the rabbi’s question. Then he explained. “When visiting the sick, one should be upbeat and cheer them up. One shouldn’t groan, ‘Oy, oy.’ ”

“You are probably wondering why I didn’t mention this to you right away. At the time, I was disturbed by your conduct, and I didn’t want to reprimand you while I was still upset.”

WITH JOY

Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah’s father, Rabbi Avraham Isaac Kook, offered similar guidance about how one should visit the sick.

During his final illness, Rav Kook urged those who came to visit him to perform the mitzvah of bikur cholim with simchah, with joy.

He explained that Maimonides, in one of his letters, emphasized that the primary goal of this mitzvah is to encourage the sick so that they will not despair and give up hope. Therefore it is clear that visitors should come with a cheerful and optimistic attitude.

Additionally, Rav Kook noted, bikur cholim is a mitzvah, and should be performed with joy, like any other mitzvah in the Torah.
