L ECREATION & EISURE For 47 years, Chuck Wallace has studied, practiced and taught Isshinryu Karate here in Western Pennsylvania. He holds the rank of 8th degree black belt with the designation of “Master Instructor” through the Isshinryu World Karate Association, headquartered in Okinawa, Japan. For the past 2 years, Chuck has taught Isshinryu Karate on Monday evenings at the Bethel Park Community Center. “Classes are consistently well attended and I receive a great deal of positive feedback from my students and their parents. Although students of all ages are welcome to enroll including parents and their children, most of the students are in the 6-12 age category,” said Chuck. “Even though I love teaching Isshinryu Karate to all ages, I especially find teaching the younger students most gratifying. I believe this is because as a child of 10 in 1950, I was stricken with spino-bulbar polio. I was one of a fortunate few since I ultimately made a full recovery, though it took many years. At age 23, I began to study Isshinryu at a karate school in the South Hills under Isshinryu’s founder Tatsuo Shimabuku of Okinawa. For me, Isshinryu was a perfect fit and it soon became my life’s passion. I have trained continuously over the years and I feel that my skills, my knowledge and my enthusiasm continue to grow. “At an age when many martial artists are content to hang up their black belts and reflect on past glories, I welcome the journey that I am making into “old age” with Isshinryu as my ever present companion. Furthermore, as I observe my young students getting a good foundation in a martial art that I, at their age, could not have learned due to my physical limitations, I feel a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment as if I have come ‘full circle‘,” he added. Beginner and Intermediate Karate classes for ages 6 to adult, are held Monday evenings at the Bethel Park Community Center. Sessions are 6 weeks of 45 minute classes beginning March 7 and April 18. Each class will include warm-up exercises, basics of the style, as well as simple and practical self-defense techniques. Classes will also emphasize self-discipline and respect. Students will learn self-defense skills as well as a sense of accomplishment. PRIDE of Bethel Park’s mission is to educate, promote, and support drug-freeyouth who care for the safety and health of self, peers, family and community. Thereal work and the "magic" of PRIDE takes place in the lives of individual teensand young people and their advisors in local schools and communities. PRIDEis unique because its primary resource and driving force is the youth themselves.PRIDE believes in youth and encourages and equips them to take leadership andto make a difference in their world. The skills they learn while being active inPRIDE teach them life skills such as leadership, research, communication skillsand organization. Graduating senior PRIDE members say PRIDE has taughtthem things they wouldn’t have learned anywhere else. PRIDE has four majorcomponents – Drug Education, Community Outreach, Community Service andAlternative Activities. PRIDE is open to any Bethel Park student in 9th – 12thgrade. Club PRIDE is open to anyone in 7th & 8th grade. Please visit our websiteat www.prideofbp.org for more information on our group. PRIDE News:Once again, PRIDE of Bethel Park has had a busy couple of months. The schooldistrict work stoppage presented us with additional time to be available to assistwith community service projects.

Veterans Day Breakfast – PRIDE assisted the Friends of Danang at their 12thannual Veterans Day breakfast held at the Marriott City Center hotel in downtownPittsburgh. Over 500 veterans from the area attended this event. After we weredone with breakfast we walked over to the CONSOLEnergy Center and the teammembers were able to see the interactive exhibits and the Mario Lemieuxfoundation mural. Then we spent the rest of the day at the Carnegie ScienceCenter Sportsworks.

Senior Citizens’ Thanksgiving Lunch – PRIDE assisted Bethel Park Recreationwith their annual Thanksgiving luncheon. The team members assisted withseating the attendees, serving and cleaning up after the luncheon.

South Hills Interfaith Ministries – When PRIDE found out that SHIM had a needfor holiday gifts this year for their Angel Emporium, we did a collection among ourteam members for gifts. When we went to deliver the gifts, we asked SHIM’sprogram director if they needed any additional holiday help. She told us that SHIMneeded help with a delivery being made to their food pantry in Prospect Park bythe Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank. We went there and helped unload over 4000pounds of food from the pallets to stock the food pantry. The food pantry wasvisited by over 160 families to obtain their holiday food.

NAMS Jam and Battle of the Bands – Again, at both of these events, PRIDEheld their concession stands. Also at NAMS Jam, we collected hats and glovesfor Washington City Mission.

Holiday Time – PRIDE had their holiday party with a gift exchange and madegingerbread houses. We also made our annual trek downtown to ice skate at thePPG Rink.

After the holidays, we started to gear up for our annual PRIDE conference that willbe held in Toledo, Ohio from April 14-16, 2011. We also held our annual lock-inwhere the team had a lot of fun watching movies, spending time together and ofcourse eating junk food. We also spent time working on drug education for ourteam and perfecting our skits and dance that we will present at the conference toour friends on other PRIDE teams throughout the United States.

Sir John Falstaff, an errant, portly, disreputable but loveable

knight, is short on money and schemes to court two wealthy

married women. The two wily wives enjoy playing practical

jokes, and conspire to outwit him and preserve their honor at

the same time. In a secondary plot, the daughter of one of the

women devises a scheme to outwit her parents and marry the

suitor of her own choosing. This modern adaptation of

Shakespeare's comedy is written in language that is easily

understood--no accents required--and features the broad

characterizations and slapstick humor that have continued to

delight audiences everywhere.

Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, inNeil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of TheOdd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms.

Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeonsisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity

remains the same.
