St. Charles Borromeo Church October 14, 2018

This Thursday, October 18, is the feastday of St Luke,

author of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.

Tradition tells us that Luke was a physician before his

call to become an Apostle and an Evangelist. To

remember St Luke, next weekend, October 20/21, at all

our Masses we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of

the Sick. Those of advanced age or those dealing with serious or

chronic illness are encouraged to be anointed. In “the old days”

this Sacrament was called Extreme Unction and it was the last

sacramental experience before death. In recent years, our

understanding has deepened; even as we pray for relief from our

illness, we also join our sufferings with those of the Lord. If you

plan to be anointed next weekend, please sit toward the front of

the church; a member our parish Worship Commission will assist

you.

Parents of our second graders, who are preparing for First

Communion, and parents of eighth graders, who are preparing

for Confirmation, are reminded of our Second Parent Meeting

scheduled for this Monday, October 15, 7:00pm to 8:00pm in the

Corrigan Gym. This is a required gathering for parents of both

our PCRF and Day School students. See you Monday evening!

Some of our parish organizations have been around for

many years; the “oldest” is the Boy Scouts—the Troop was

established here in 1937. One of the more recently founded is our

Knights of Columbus Council, only four years old. The K o C is

a fraternal/charitable/religious group that do good things in the

name of the Lord. If interested in more info about the K of C, stop

at the Information Night planned for this Tuesday, October 16,

at 7:00pm in the Borromeo Room (first floor) of the Parish

Activities Center.

And speaking of the K of C, congratulations to long-time

St Charles parishioner, John Nunamaker, who was selected—

in a diocesan wide competition—as the K of C Knight of the Year.

John was honored at last week’s K of C Awards Banquet.

We have spent quite some time preparing for next Saturday’s

Joyfully Gifted Parish Retreat. This should be an enjoyable and

helpful day for all participants—and you are invited to be there!

Please refer to the detailed article in this bulletin and let us

know—quickly—if you plan to attend.

Our St Charles Dismas Ministry assists those jailed and

imprisoned and those about to be released who want to make a

fresh start. Dismas Ministry is sponsoring a Fall Clothing Drive

next weekend, October 20-21. Check the article in this bulletin

for the items needed; clean out those closets and drawers and

drop off your gently-used men’s clothing at the old credit union

space next to the Parish Hall.

Ushers are reminded that this is the second weekend of the

Annual October Count. At homily time, please count the number

of folks at Mass today and enter that number on the chart in the

priests’ sacristy. Many thanks!

First Responders are reminded of the Diocesan Blue Mass for

safety personnel scheduled for Tuesday, October 23, 7:00pm, at

Our Lady of Angels Church, 3644 Rocky River Drive in

Cleveland’s West Park area (just north of Kamm’s Corners.)

Bishop Nelson Perez will be celebrant and homilist. This Mass

will honor those lives lost in the line of duty and allow the

community to thank those who serve us so faithfully.

Pray for peace.

JUST SHOP—

AND HELP SAINT CHARLES SCHOOL!

There are 4 ways to help our school

with no cost to you.

1. Cut and send in the BoxTops for Education. Did you know

that each of those is worth 10 cents? Throw them away and

you are throwing away money!

2. Cut and send in Tyson labels (again, don’t throw those

out—we can use them!)

3. Shop at ACME? Send in your receipt and we will do the

rest. We have gotten about $600 each year for the past few

years just by sending in receipts.

4. Register your Giant Eagle Advantage Card to benefit

Saint Charles: Go to www.GiantEagle.com/AFTS and

create an account. Then choose school programs and enter

our school ID of 2817. Add our school! It takes about 4

minutes to both register and add Saint Charles School.

ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE ALUMNI Celebrate Mass on October 20th with St. John Nepomucene

are welcome. Please RSVP by October 16th to SJNAlum-

MISSION STATEMENT

SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH

5891 Ridge Road Parma, Ohio 44129 Phone: (440) 884-3030 Fax: (440) 884-5326 Website: www.stcharlesonline.org

Dear St. Charles Parishioner, Thank you for being a part of our St. Charles Borromeo Parish family. We appreciate all that you do for our parish by sharing your God-given gifts of time, talent and treasure. Your active participation in the life of our parish helps us to fulfill our vision and mission.

It is once again time to renew your membership in St. Charles Borromeo Parish. “Belonging to a parish” is an important matter and we should make a conscious decision each year to remain a registered member.

Fifteen years ago, our Parish Council and Finance Council, together with Fr. Carlin, held 45 Town-Hall meetings to discuss how each parish family could support our community of faith. Based on feedback from these meetings, we designed the “My Fair Share” approach to parish membership and support. Parishioners stated―loud and clear― that “those who ask to be members of St. Charles are expected to help with the work the parish does and each one should do, ‘their fair share.’”

To renew your parish membership for 2019, please complete the enclosed “My Fair Share 2019” pledge form (also available on the parish website) and return it to the Parish Office by Monday, October 22. To help our Finance Council budget for the upcoming year, please indicate how much you hope to donate to the parish in 2019, and select a payment option. This is not a “binding pledge”; just an estimated total of what you are able to contribute. If you select the credit card or automatic withdrawal payment options, our Business Office will arrange the details with you.

Within your family pledge form, please provide any updated contact information so that we may update your Parish Census record. This includes your current address, phone/cell number(s) and current email address(es).

In addition to sharing the “treasure” of your financial support, parishioners are also asked to share their “time and talent” by volunteering to help with worship, service or education ministries of interest to them. For more information on available opportunities, see the parish website: www.stcharlesonline.org.

Thank you for your generous support and participation in My Fair Share. Families that have not returned their pledge form by October 22 will receive a follow-up communication until a response is received. “My Fair Share 2019” Committee St. Charles Borromeo Parish Finance Council
