PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends

Welcome Back I welcome everyone back for Term Four, 2017. The last term for this school year seems to have arrived very quickly and as it is always an action packed term, we hope that everyone feels refreshed and relaxed. I anticipate that for our Year Six students this will be a memorable term, particularly as it includes their Graduation and Confirmation. We feel positive this will be a wonderful term for all students, parents and staff.

Confirmation Students who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in October will have attended a Home Mass either last term, yesterday or on the 17th October as part of their commitment to their faith formation. Thank you to the Hawkins, Pettenon and Groves families who have offered their home for these Sacramental Learning Masses. On Thursday 19th October, the Confirmation candidates will spend time with Monsignor Anthony Ireland along with students from other schools who are joining our community to celebrate Confirmation. I look forward to joining the families for this special event in the faith life of our students. We continue to pray for these students and their families.

Annual Walkathon The sun was shining down on our enthusiastic and happy walkers for our Annual Walkathon on Tuesday. Thank you to all of our parent helpers who made this day such a special and well run event. Special thanks to Jane O'Callaghan, Julia Hay, Jodie Naismith and Andrew Buckland, as well as to our wonderful staff for their commitment and dedication. A special mention must also be made to the following parents: Kim Nguyen Carolyn Gleeson Amalie Beanland Cheryl Tan Maria Dickson Cal Smyth Renee Young Melanie Windsor Tracey Otley Eleanor Squire Angela Nicolai Rochelle Conolly Renee Hoy Rebecca Mardling Tanya Jones Lisa Jennings Anna Page Litsa Avgeridis

Welcome to Clare and Natalie Erin and I had the pleasure of interviewing some amazing applicants over the holidays. We welcome Clare Castle and Natalie Billing to St Michael’s. Clare is our new Admin Assistant and Natalie is our new Learning Support Officer. I look forward to working with Clare and Natalie.

School Advisory Council Nominations In the next Newsletter parents will be invited to self-nominate for any vacant elected positions on the School Advisory Council. The SAC is an extremely important service to our school community and I thank the current members for their support and expertise in determining the future direction of St Michael’s.

Opening and Blessing On Thursday the 19th October at 4pm the Learning Centre will be officially opened and blessed by Archbishop Hart. There are quite a number of guests attending and therefore Fr Laurence has given permission for the school to finish early. The children will be dismissed at 3pm on this day in an effort to lessen traffic congestion and to provide time for the Staff to set up. All families are welcome to attend this event. For catering purposes, please RSVP to [email protected] by 22nd September if you will be attending.

Term 4 Inquiry The teachers have been busy preparing for the Design, Creativity and Technology unit to be worked on this term. The students will be encouraged to innovate and imagine new ways of working, creating and making. This inquiry really stimulates thinking skills and hands on activities and personalisation of learning.

Social Media Forum We are delighted to have parent input into our Social Media policies. We sought feedback regarding the current policies we have in place and value input ensuring best practice in our new Social Media policies. All policies will be available on our website once they are updated to reflect current practices and have been ratified by the SAC.

Building a Bridge from Data to School Improvement’ Collective The ‘Building a bridge from data to school improvement’ collective involving St Francis Xavier Box Hill, St Kevin’s Templestowe, Genazzano and St Michael’s met at St Michael’s on 11th October. This Catholic Education Melbourne (CEM) supported project supports all four school leaders and teachers to develop deeper understanding and processes in data analysis, feedback, progress and growth for all students. The evidence will be shared to other schools to learn the process and strategies for improving student outcomes.

Electives The electives will begin in Week 3 of this term. Presently the teachers are submitting what they are able to offer to support the students’ interests and their learning. Once all foci is decided I will ask the students to choose their preferred elective. If any parents are able to assist you will be welcomed.

Parent Requests 2018 If you have any urgent requests for your child for 2018 please send them to me before Friday 20th October. As you are aware, I do my best to accommodate wherever possible. Some classes in 2017 were quite uneven due to late parent requests. To prevent this from occurring again I will not be making changes after Friday 20th October. Please send requests to [email protected] with your valid reasons.

New Arrival Congratulations to Kate, Tom, Max (1/2R) and Lachlan on the arrival of their beautiful little boy Ned Patrick. From their photo we can see the joy he is bringing to his big brothers already!

Condolences Please keep Natalie Billing (our new Learning Support Officer) and her family in your prayers as Natalie’s mum, Ann passed away on Tuesday. Our prayers and thoughts are with her at this sad time.

THANK YOU

Thank you to everyone who donated so generously for my Alzheimer’s Australia Kokoda Trek.

The support and thoughtful words were very motivating and inspiring. I had an awesome experience walking the Kokoda and although it was not without it difficulties at time, I felt very honoured to walk in the footsteps of the Australian soldiers while raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s Australia. The fight against dementia is not an easy one and raising funds and awareness can be very challenging despite the fact that dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia.

Thank you again for helping me exceed my fund raising target!

THANK YOU

Thank you to the entire St Michael’s school and parish community for your condolences after the sudden death of our beloved Neil.

A special thank you must go to Marisa, Jo and the staff at St Michael’s for taking such great care of the girls. Knowing they were surrounded by their friends and supported by the staff gave me comfort to move forward and focus on everything that needed to be done in the days immediately following Neil’s passing.

There are so many people to thank – in particular Dan and Jill H, Lisa J, Kristy N and Therese M as well as all the people that contributed to the meal train. Also thank you to Fr Laurence, Gail and Deacon Malcom for their support and assistance in planning Neil’s service.

To say that I have been overwhelmed by offers of help is an understatement. At the moment I can’t even begin to think what that help might look like, but knowing you are all there to support us when needed is a great comfort.

We are truly blessed and grateful to be part of this incredible St Michael’s community.

Don’t forget to supply a hat for Term 4. As of next week, we require all students to have hats on for outdoor play. You are more than welcome to leave one at ASC, or have this in your children’s bag for each day!

PLEASE - if you have any empty plastic bottles, we would love to have them in the program! ‘Take 3’ initiative – Our photo wall is needing some love and attention so please send through photos of your children putting 3 pieces of rubbish in the bin, please email these through to us at [email protected]

Fact: A plastic bottle will last more than 450 years if left on the beach. RSPCA Donations - Please keep them coming! We ask for anyone who has any old blankets, towels, manchester (pillow cases, flat sheets, fitted sheets) or pet accessories such as bowls, cat poles, bedding, etc, to bring these to the After-Care Room and we will donate them to the RSPCA on behalf of St Michael's! The children have done a wonderful job of sewing mice for the kittens and we will continue this project this term as well. Our Star of the Week award go to… Holly F for being very mature and making good choices! Awesome work Holly!
