Page 1 The Quilt Stitching Together The Fabric Of Our Faith All Saints’ Episcopal Church November 2015 Annual Stewardship Campaign Starts in November November. It starts with All Saints Day, which reminds us of the faith and institutional foundations laid by the generations that have gone before us. And it ends with Advent, the promise of a brand new Church year. November also encompasses the All Saints annual stewardship campaign. Watch for communications about the stewardship campaign beginning Sunday, November 8, and please plan to return your pledge card by Sunday, November 29. As a congregation we have always responded to both the expecta- tions of those who have gone before us to sustain the church and neighbor- hood they built, and the call of the unknown future to be ready and respon- sive to changes and new challenges we may need to accept. November reminds us of that duality, and the stewardship campaign challenges us each to do what we can to sustain our church home, and be ready for the future. The stewardship committee wants to remind each of you of the incredible work that you do on a regular basis to sustain and grow All Saints. Our grounds are kept neat and presentable, as our facilities. Funds are raised for operational costs, special projects, and outreach. Our arts outreach project to youth and adults is up and running. We continue to support the academic needs of Larchmont Elementary School students with school supplies, their physical needs with warm coats, and their emo- tional health with recognition at Christmas with gift-filled stockings. It is a danger to start writing about all that the congregation does, because there is no good place to stop. The stewardship campaign is another one of the things that you respond to each and every year. You understand that our presence in the community requires not only our time and extraordinary talents, but our treasure too. Please prayerfully consider the materials you receive that explain the importance of the stewardship campaign, make a pledge for 2016, and return your pledge card by November 29. Thank you. Christmas Eve Worship – your time preference As all of you know, Michael Gardner, who had been our Organist for several months, recently accepted the Organist/Choir director position at St. Joseph St. John's Episcopal Church in Lakewood. They will be having one Service on Christmas Eve at 9:00pm. This means that Michael will be able to play for us at an earlier service that evening. The question to which I would like feedback is: What time might we want to have our ONE Christmas Eve Eucharist in or-der for him to play for us? All things being considered, the best times for us would be either: 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 or 6:30 on Christmas Eve. Our decision will be published in the December Quilt. I will devise come kind of tally board for your thoughts. In order for me to make the best decision, I need your thoughts. Remember, we also have ONE Service on Christmas Day beginning at 10:30am. Thanksgiving eve Evening Prayer – 7:00pm, November 25th It has been our practice to gather for our Thanksgiving celebration on the eve-ning before Thanksgiving. This year will be no exception. Our Service will be-gin at 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 25th. Please make every effort to be here. There will be a responsibilities list posted in the Narthex. if you are able to serve, please sign up. Congregational Meeting on November 18th I was delighted by the positive turnout for our meeting with the Episcopal Re-tirement Communities representatives on the 18th; as well as the hospitality and welcome that you gave our guests. This exploration has just begun, and there will be more such meetings in the future should we decide to proceed. Thank you for your open minded hearts and forward thinking minds in this endeavor!

Bible Study

Bible Study is backup and running. We continue to meet on Friday eve-nings between 7:00pm to 8:30pm. We are using a study guide to our prayer book’s catechism as our bible study guide. I think this is going to prove to be a new and exciting way to rediscover our relationship with God, not only through bible study, but also through a better understanding of our relation-ship to God as Episcopalians. It should help us know ourselves better, and in knowing, better equip us to be in relationship with the community in which we live.

Please mark your calendars and make plans on attending. Fridays which we will not be meeting are: November 27 (Thanksgiving weekend) December 25 (Christmas Day evening) January 1 (New Years Day) February 12 through the season of Lent. Respectfully submitted by

Bazaar 2015

It came and is gone.

I would like to thank the people from the 8:00 am service who made sure the long tables were set up, and the ones who moved all the chairs and gave us so much more room to set up. Thanks to the kitchen workers, dish washers, waitresses, manager and the cooks who gave us a wonderful lunch. Those of you who missed it missed a lot! Thanks to the one’s who helped set up all the crafts and made great displays of all their work. Wonderful Christmas gifts were there for all to see and buy. Half of my Christmas shopping is done now. I’m sorry the turn-out was so light. But the fellowship that we shared with the ones who came was great. Thank you. One last note of interest is that we made about $800.00. Thank you to each and everyone who helped in whatever you did. Vi Hilderbrand

-Celebrate America

You are invited to join us once again this year to join in our long standing annual observation to Celebrate America. (This will be the twelfth anniversary for this event)

Please regard this announcement as a formal invitation to you to once again join us in the celebration of our great coun-try and the men and women who have sacrificed so much to make it great. We will be Celebrating America this year No-vember 8th, at 1:00 pm. Our celebration will honor the men and women in our congregation who have served, and are now serving our nation. This year we are once again encour-aging everyone to invite their friends and relatives who too are veterans to join us in this recognition and celebration.

So, like last year, here’s what’s going to happen. We hope to see you all there, vet and non-vet, join-ing in this very special event honoring the men and women who have made America great.

When: Sunday, November 8, 2014, 1:00 pm.

Where: All Saints Episcopal Church.

Why: To honor all vets, both church members living and dead, and all church members’ friends and family who are serving or have served.

What: we need to help make this event be all that it can be:

1..Please let us know the names of your friends and family who have served, or are serving, in the nations military including their dates of service and to which branch of the service they were/are affili-ated. We need this information as soon as possible, but no later than October 26th.

2. Bring your favorite salad or dessert to share.

3. Bring a cake for the cake walk we plan to have at the end of the day. (If you plan to bring a cake, please contact Sara Hockman to let her know your intentions.

People’s Warden Report, October, 2015 It’s been a while since I last submitted a report to you all. I do so now because there are several topics needing addressed and I feel the best way to do that is in writing so as to give everyone an opportunity to know what’s going on here at All Saints. As most of you know, it’s been a bit chilly in church lately. That’s because we are the victim of copper thieves. On Saturday evening, September 26th, Michael Barnett contacted me to report that he had found the church crawl space access door stomped in. You all may recall that Sunday following things were a bit cold in the sanctuary. I came up to church that next Monday, September 28th, to repair the crawl space access cover. It was during doing these repairs that I discovered that copper thieves had cut and removed about one-hundred feet of the furnace’s supply/return copper tubing. We have been dealing with no heat since then because we hope to get our gas furnace installed soon. It would cost us about $160.00 to $250.00 to repair/replace the stolen tubing. A cost we judged to be wasteful seeing as how we expect the new furnace will be installed within two to four weeks. If necessary, we have the option of conducting church services in the parish hall in the interim. Time will tell. Now, let me report on the latest updates concerning our furnace project. Hopefully, a lot of what I have to say here will already come to fruition by the time you read this. We are entering the final stages of seeing our longed for completion of the installation of a new gas furnace. As I write this I have just fin-ished talking to Bill Thurman of Thurman’s Heating and cooling about beginning work installing the fur-nace. We hope to begin that work the week of October 15th. The gas company also anticipates begin-ning the work of installing the gas service that same week, or the week thereafter. Their work start date is contingent on receiving the proper permits from the city of Tacoma. Let’s pray that happens as quickly as we would like. The last thing I want to share with you concerns trees. I know, I know, the last thing you want me think-ing about is trees, but I must. Our neighbors to the East of us, Charlie and Laurie, have approached the BC about the willow tree on the Southeast corner of our property. This tree is right on the corner we share to their driveway. It has come to their attention that the tree seems to have become a good place for some elements in our community to throw away their garbage, some of which consists of needles and other drug paraphernalia as well as other items of a “personal” nature. They would like our permis-sion to cut this tree down and clean up that corner of “OUR PROPERTY” to help alleviate this problem. The BC, after focused deliberation, has voted to allow them to proceed. We think loosing this rather messy tree is a small price to pay to maintain good relations with our neighbor and the larger commu-nity. Further discussions with Charlie and Laurie were also had regarding their desire to help us keep a a more watchful eye on the property behind the church and on the east side of the church. They have suggested that we consider removing a number of the tall cypress trees that boarder the east side of church property between us and them. They try to keep a vigilant eye on the nefarious activities that quite often occur behind and along side the church but find that these trees quite often hamper their efforts. The BC has decided to delay acting on this request until we have had an opportunity to hear feedback from all of you. Please consider this report to be a first attempt to begin generating that feedback. Feel free to talk to any BC member to share your thoughts and concerns regarding these tress and their impact on our ascetics and security. I want you to know that it is no ones desire to cut down and remove all these trees. We are initially looking at cutting down only enough trees to create about 24”-36” opening between each of the trees remaining. Please help us make the right decision for all of us. Respectfully submitted by; Larry Talbert Your Junior Warden
