Thereisgreatpowerinaneffectiveconceptdrawing.Hoveringsomewherebetweenahandsketchandarealisticrendering,ithastheabilitytocommunicatethedesignintentandconveythespiritofplacewhileavoidinggettingmiredinthesmalldetailsofamorepolishedpiece.

NextIllexportacolorselectionLayer.ThisisachievedbypaintinglargeareasofthesamematerialsveryvibrantcolorswithinyourSketchUpmodel.ThiswillgreatlyaidyouinyourselectionsforpaintinginPhotoshop.Onceyouhavecoloredandexportedyourimage,youdontneedtosavethesecolorsandcanjustundothemwithinSketchUpuntilyourebacktoyouroriginalcolors.

OneshortcutthathelpsinbothselectionsandlayeringinPhotoshopistojustexportcertainelementsfromSketchUp.Illusuallyjustexportcertainpiecesthatareimportanttothescene.Inthiscase,Iexportedoutjustthebridgesectionandthetablesandchairswiththeirlargeumbrellas.Intheimagebelow,youcanseethatIvejustdoneaSelectAllwithinmymodel,then,holdingSHIFT(onamac),Ideselectthebridgepiece.IthenHidetherestofthemodelandIamjustleftwiththeelementIwishtoexport.

SelectCertainElements

NowthatIjusthavetheelementIwant,IllexportthisselectedpieceatthesameresolutionastheoverallimagesIexportedbefore.OnemajordifferencehereisthatImnowexportingthispieceasa.pngfile.ThiswillcreateafilewecanuseinPhotoshopthatwillonlyhavetheelementweneedonatransparent(andnotwhite)background.MakesureyouhaveTransparentBackgroundcheckedintheappropriatedialoguebox.

ExportasPNGFile

MachasbettersupportfortransparentimageexportstraightfromSketchUp,thisoptionisnotavailableonPC.IfyouhaveLayOut,thereisaworkaroundforPCuserstoobtainatransparentbackground.LayOutisakindofapresentationtoolforSketchUp,thatcomeswiththeProversion.Thisworkaroundwillbeofnousetothoseusingthefreeversion(SketchUpMake)asLayOutdoesntcomewithit.YouwillhavetoresorttoremovingthebackgroundinPhotoshop(MagicWandpossibly).

GotoWindow>Styles>Edit,thencheckthroughtheoptionsuntilyougettosomelittlecheckboxesthatsaySkyandGround.TurnoffSkyandGroundandmakesurethatthebackgroundissettoperfectlywhite(RGBvalues:255,255,255).SaveitandgotoFile>SendtoLayOut.OnceopeninLayout,saveitasaPDF.ItwillthenopeninPhotoshopwithtransparentbackground.

OnceIhaveexportedallmyelementsas.pngsfromSketchUp,ImreadytoworkinPhotoshopnow.

OnceinsidePhotoshop,Illopenthelinework,shadowandcolorselectionfiles.Startingwiththelineworkfile,doubleclickontheBackgroundLayerintheLayersPalletandchangetheLayerfromalockedbackgroundtoaneditableLayer.IusuallyrenamethisLayerLines.IthensetthisLayertoMultiplyinorderforthepaintLayerstoshowthroughbeneathit.IthenplaceinmyShadowLayerinthisfileandsettheShadowtoMultiplytoo.

Tomakesureyourfilescomeinpreciselyontopof(orbelow)oneanother,gotothefileyouwanttoimport,doaSelectAllcommand,thencomebacktoyouroriginalfileandPasteinPlace.IlldothisforallthefilesIveexportedfromSketchUp.Youllnoticethatyourelementsshouldcomeinexactlywhereyouwantthemaswell.

PasteinPlace

OnetechniqueIhavebeenusingforyearsistoimportsomesortofpapertexture.Ifindthishelpsroughenupthedrawingabit,addsgreatdepthandhelpstokeeptheimageconceptualinnature.Youcanfindcountlesspapertexturesonline.IllbringintheoneIlike,Desaturateit,thenplaywiththeLayersettingsuntilIgetatexturethatfeelsprettygood.Itsimportanttofindthesettingsthatworkforyou,sohavefunandexperiment.

ImportaPaperTexture

YoullseethatIhavenowgotsomegreattexturewithintheShadowLayeralreadyandmorewillcontinuetoshowthroughonceIcontinuepainting.Atthispoint,IllalsomesswiththeHue/SaturationofmyShadowLayertobringitfromadeadgreytoamorenaturalhue.Finally,whilestillontheShadowLayerIllBurninsomeareastomimicabitofAmbientOcclusion.

Imnowreadytostartlayeringinpaint.IllalwayscreatenewLayersforeachnewsectionImpaintingin.Forinstance,intheimagebelow,IhavepaintedintheskyonitsownLayerusingtheGradientToolandthenlayeredinaphotographofsomeofthemountainsthatexistnearthesiteontheirownLayer.Thisnotonlymakesiteasytoediteachpaintedarea,butitalsoallowsforquickselectionsofeverythingonthatlayer(Onamac,holdtheCommandkeyovertheLayerthumbnailimageandclick).

Next,IhavelayeredintheriveronitsownLayer,usingcolorssampledfromtheskyandmountainstokeepthemoodconsistent.

Then,thegrassyareas.ImabletoquicklyselectalltheareasofgreenbyutilizingmyColorSelectionLayer.IwillselecttheaquacolorandthenrightclickandselectSimilar.

WiththeGradientTool,Ithenpaintedinthepaverareas.Forthedarkerstriping,IwasabletousetheMagicWandToolonmyLineLayerandselectjustthebandsIwanted.Withthemselected,IwentbacktotheLayerwiththepavercolorandadjustedtheHue/Saturation.

UseGradientTooltoPaintPavers

Next,Illstartblockingintrees.Becausethisisaquickconceptdrawingandnotafinalrendering,Iwantsomethingthatisfastandbelievabletoaddabunchoftreestothescene.Idownloadedsomefreetreebrushesofftheinternetandstampedinabunchofdifferenttreesintothescene.IlltypicallyaddadarkStrokearoundthetreestomakethemmimictheSketchUplinework.
