Audience Profile: Questionnaire

In my Questionnaire I decided to ask two studentsfrom my school that had watched our ThrillerOpening Sequence. As my audience feedback wasmainly based on the comments from those ofdifferent ages I wanted to focus my questionnaire ondifferent genders.

In my questionnaire (Shown on the left) I havechosen two students of the same age. This allowedme to focus on their interests as their gender ratherthan having to take their age into a count. For myquestionnaire i decided to just ask them generalquestions that could support my audience research. For example; ‘ What attracts you to this particulargenre?’ This allowed me to think for myself whetheror not they enjoyed watching our Thriller opening.

Question’s I asked:• What genre of film do you prefer to watch?• What attracts you to this particular genre?• What do you dislike about one other genre and

why?• If Thriller is your favourite genre or not, what

attracted you to our Thriller opening?

Audience Responses

First on my questionnaire I put the names of bothstudents, their names and gender. This allowedme to start building up a basic profile on both ofthem before answering my questions. Althoughboth students have seen the Thriller opening Idecided to show it to them one more time.

After the viewing of the Thriller opening was overI moved onto asking the questions. To ask myquestions I spoke to both of the studentsseparately, this allowed me to think of thecontrast between their answers. My firstquestions I asked was ‘What genre of film do youprefer to watch?’ (On the left) The responses ofthe students are displayed as well as a small list ofmain genres. When asking the question I chooseto give them a shot list of genres to prompt theirresponse. Both Aklima and Mohammed’sresponse were straight forward, however Aklimaseems to be subverting the stereotype of a“woman's favourite film.” As usually if you were tothink stereotypically it would be the Romancegenre.

My second question I asked thenlinked back to the first one. Thisallowed me to get a more in depthresponse from both of them.

For this question I made sure to get the exact quote from both of my peers to make sure I can showthe contrast between their response. As the question was focused on a more detailed response italso allowed me to create a basic profile of both of them. (Top left) For the question Aklima gave mea detailed response on what attracts her to the Comedy genre, ‘I enjoy being able to laugh at a filmand talk to other’s while I’m watching.’ Usually more of the thriller genre films are fast pacedmeaning that the audience will have to focus on the narrative, this connotes that Aklima may notenjoy this particular genre. Aklima’s next part of the response the infers that further as she ratherdiscuss the films as the narrative continues to be explained, therefore comedy is a good genre for heras they do not have a complicated storyline.

For the same question Mohammed also gave me a detailed response on what attracts him to theAction Adventure genre, ‘I enjoy watching something that is fast paced.’ As he enjoys the fast pacedediting this leads me to believe that he might enjoy the Thriller genre as the narratives are usuallyfast moving. Mohammed also mentions about cliché narratives, commonly found in the comedygenre, whereas the thriller genre has some unique narratives.

My third question I asked was tosee if my peers had already madeup their own mind about theThriller genre.

Similar to question two I made sure to get the exact quote that my peer made when I asked thequestion, this allowed me to show the contrast between their responses. As I wanted to build abasic profile on my peers from my questionnaire I made sure to ask ‘why?’ . (Top left) For thisparticular question Aklima gave me a clear response on why she dislikes the crime genre, ‘to me thenarrative is too slow paced, which leads me to not focus on the film completely.’ From Aklima’sresponse I can tell that Aklima wants a clear narrative that is easy to understand without readingbetween the lines.

For the same question Mohammed gave me a detailed response on the particular genre he dislikesand why, ‘Horror is the one I watch the least.’ In his response Mohammed mentioned that many ofthe recent Horror films have become repetitive, for example; the paranormal sub-genre has similarnarratives to one another. One example of a Horror genre film that twists the typical narrative isInsidious, although Insidious is a paranormal Horror the main twist completely changes the storyline. From Mohammed's response I can tell that he enjoys a narrative with a unique twist, our Thrilleropening also has a twist that catches the audience off guard. For example; the audience wouldexpect our narrative to convey the typical Thriller conventions, however parts of our thriller subvertthem.

For my last question I wanted toknow what attracted them to ourthriller opening. This allowed me toknow whether or not they wouldenjoy other films from the Thrillergenre.

For the last question I again made sure to use the exact quote I got from my peers, which thenallowed me to show and develop the contrast between them both. In my question I wanted to makesure that even though they may not enjoy the Thriller genre that they are able to pick out somemain parts that attract them. (Top left) For my last question Aklima gave me a response that pointedout the main parts that she enjoyed, ‘narrative was slow paced which kept me wanting to know.’This connotes that because Aklima enjoyed the slow pace of the film she could understand thenarrative, which is one of the main points made in her response earlier. Her response also showsthat as a group we achieved the some main conventions of a thriller, for example; tension.

For the same question Mohammed also gave me a clear response expressing what attracted him toout Thriller opening, ‘I didn’t expect it to be so dramatic.’ This connotes that as a group we wereable to create a thriller opening that could attract a wider audience although some may thing thenarrative is controversial. As our thriller is from the sub-genre (psychological) it will mainly attract aolder target audience as the narrative may be complicated to understand.
