The Music Video

Why did I conduct audience feedback?

• In order to find out whether our music video had been successful or not, I conducted some audience feedback to see what our audience thought. • These questions would help us to understand what we did well and

how we could improve if we were to make another music video in the future. I did this by creating a questionnaire for my peers to complete. After they had been completed, I collated the data and then evaluated it.

The Results

Question 1: Do you think that the song we chose fits the music video?• After collating my data, 100% of participants in the survey said

yes. • This was a huge relief because choosing a song that myself and

my partner really felt would work for a music video and the vision we had for a final product was a really difficult decision which we highly debated throughout the planning of our music video.• If the song fits the narrative and the performance, then

everything else fits into place and should work and fall into place in regards to filming and editing techniques. The song choice is the basis to any music video.

Question 2: Do you think the editing is sleek and all shots cut to the beat?

• 100% of my participants said yes. This was a huge relief because this was the element of the music video that took the longest and it was a very long process. • After each edit, I collated audience feedback and specifically

asked whether the shots cut to the beat. We felt as though this was a really important element of our music video, because the song we chose does have a really distinct beat to it, so naturally we wanted every cut to be accurate. • We also found that many industry standard music videos ensured

that shots cut to a beat. If it was slightly out at any point in the music video, it would be noticeable to the audience. I am very happy with this response because it was a very hard element to execute well.

Question 3: Is the relationship between the two characters believable?

• 100% of people surveyed thought that the relationship was believable.

• Prior to creating the music video, we were warned by our teachers that a relationship can often look unrealistic if the two actors aren't in a real relationship. F

• For this reason, Rob and Izzy were used because even though they aren't in a romantic relationship, they have a very close friendship and so they are comfortable with each-other. Rob is also a professional actor and so the relationship was portrayed in a realistic way, which adds to the verisimilitude of the music video. As well as this, if the relationship didn't look realistic, then the music video wouldn't look professional.

Question 4: Did you feel that the performer conveyed a star image?• 100% said yes. • This is a really important factor to consider when

creating music videos because the star image, as suggested by Richard Dyer, is very important because he said that the star starts out as a 'real person' and then turns to an image for people to look up to.• We really wanted our performer to do this and look

like a real performer, which we achieved by encouraging him throughout his performance to try and make him feel comfortable.

Question 5: Did you think the performance element being in black and white was effective?

• 100% of people thought this element was effective. I personally really liked this element because I felt as though it disguised the narrative from the performance so the fact that the audience like this too is really satisfying. • We wanted our music video to look unique by using this element.

Question 6: Were there any elements of the music video you felt were particularly weak? If yes, please specify what. • Some of my sample surveyed said that some of the 'lip synching is

slightly out', 'weak lip synching' and 'the performer looked to the side'. • Personally, this feedback is disappointing because we spent a lot of time

collecting audience feedback throughout the production process and we tried to amend the fact that the lip synching was out. It could just be the export, but if we were to improve this music video then this would be an element I would improve.• One person said that the costume could have been a bit more extreme

to fit the indie genre, which I agree with, but being on a small budget this was really difficult to fund and also to find indie clothing suitable was very difficult too, especially with limited time to find suitable clothing.

Question 7: What was your favourite element of the music video? Please specify.• Performance shots were very popular amongst 6 of

the sample group surveyed and that this was their favourite element of the music video. • Originally we didn't include the performance element

so this was really reassuring because including this element was obviously the right thing to do, as it does make the music video look more like a music video. • Another strength was the 'ghosting' effect used, as

one person stated that this 'made the video and makes it unique' as no other music videos actually include this element, so this makes our music video unique.
