WHEN ANSWERING THIS QUESTION

• USING A VIDEO TO OBTAIN THE DATA FROM MY QUESTIONNAIRE PROVED TO BE TIME CONSUMING AS OPPOSED TO HANDING OUT MY QUESTIONNAIRE FOR PARTICIPANTS TO FILL OUT.

• USING A WRITTEN QUESTIONNAIRE I WAS ABLE TO GET MORE PARTICIPANTS TO TAKE PART AT ONE TIME UNLIKE WHEN RECORDING THE VIDEO WHERE I COULD ONLY RECORD TWO OF THEM.

QUESTION 1&2: ARE YOU ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE GENRE OF MY MUSIC VIDEO & WHAT SIGNIFIERS DID YOU USE?

• 10/10 PARTICIPANTS WHERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE GENRE OF THIS MUSIC VIDEO AS R&B.

• THEY MAINLY USED SIGNIFIERS SUCH AS HOW THE MUSIC SOUNDED BUT ALSO WERE ABLE TO NOTICE THAT IT FOLLOWS THE CONVENTION NARRATIVE OF A LOVE STORY WHICH IS MUCH DIFFERENT TO A GENRE SUCH AS ROCK WHERE ITS MORE OF A PERFORMANCE PIECE.

• OVER HALF PARTICIPANTS ALSO USED SIGNIFIERS SUCH AS HOW MANY PEOPLE WHERE IN THE VIDEO.

QUESTION 3: CAN YOU IDENTIFY WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE NARRATIVE OF THIS VIDEO?

• 10/10 PARTICIPANTS WERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THAT THIS VIDEO HAD A NARRATIVE ABOUT A MAN AND A WOMAN IN LOVE.

• HOWEVER 6/10 PARTICIPANTS WHERE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THAT SHE MISSES HIM AND OFTEN THINKS ABOUT THE TIMES THAT SHE IS WITH HIM

• THOSE 6/10 PARTICIPANTS USED THE BLACK AND WHITE COLOUR AND FADES TO IDENTIFY THAT IT WAS A FLASHBACK.

QUESTION 4: WHAT DO YOU THINK WENT WELL WITH THIS VIDEO?

• IT IS VERY HARD TO ANALYSE QUALITATIVE DATA, AND THIS IS WHY I DID NOT INCLUDE MANY OPEN QUESTIONS.

• PARTICIPANT 4 “I THINK THAT THE STORY LINE WAS REALLY GOOD AND EASY TO FOLLOW”

• PARTICIPANT 2 “WHAT I THINK WENT WELL IS THE WAY YOU SEE THEM TOGETHER, YOU CAN KIND OF CONNECT”

• PARTICIPANT 1 “IT WAS VERY ENTERTAINING TO WATCH AND YOU COULD SEE THE WHOLE STORYLINE AND THE PASSION BETWEEN THE ACTORS”

• PARTICIPANT 7 “THE KISS WAS MY FAVOURITE PART, THEY LOOK LIKE THEY ARE ACTUALLY TOGETHER”

QUESTION 5: DID I EXPLORE A GOOD RANGE OF CAMERA ANGLES?

• THIS QUESTION WAS A CLOSED QUESTION AND THEREFORE DID NOT PROVOKE A LOT OF RESPONSE FROM MY PARTICIPANTS

• 10/10/ALL PARTICIPANTS RESPONDED WITH A YES ANSWER

• BECAUSE THIS WAS A CLOSED QUESTION ONLY 3/10 PARTICIPANTS EXPANDED BY STATING WHAT ANGLES I USED – LOW ANGLE, HIGH ANGLE AND CLOSE UPS

QUESTION 6: DID I EXPLORE A GOOD RANGE OF EDITING TECHNIQUES? • 10/10 PARTICIPANTS ANSWERED YES IN THAT I USED A GOOD RANGE OF

EDITING TECHNIQUES

• THE TWO PARTICIPANTS THAT HAD FILM RESPONSES, I WAS ABLE TO ASK THEM TO EXPAND FOR THE SAKE OF UNDERSTANDING WHAT EDITING TECHNIQUES WERE THE MOST NOTICEABLE, MEMORABLE

• TO WHICH PARTICIPANT 1 RESPONDED “I CAN’T GIVE YOU THE EXACT NAME BUT IT WAS A WAVE, WATER DROPLET THING, LIKE A FLASHBACK”

• PARTICIPANT 2 RESPONDED “I LIKE THE USE OF THE CROSS DISSOLVE WHERE SHE IS BY HER SELF AS A SOLO ARTIST AND THEN IT CROSSES OVER TO HER AND HER PARTNER

QUESTION 7: HOW REAL IS THIS VIDEO COMPARED TO THE VIDEOS YOU NORMALLY SEE ON TV?

• PARTICIPANT 1 “THERE ARE A FEW SIMILARITIES, SAME NARRATIVE AND SAME SORT OF STRUCTURE”

• PARTICIPANT 5 “THAT SORT OF STORYLINE IS USED ON NORMAL MUSIC VIDEOS”

• PARTICIPANT 10 “ON NORMAL VIDEOS THE QUALITY IS CLEARER BUT THE STORY AND THE SINGING WAS THE SAME”

• PARTICIPANT 9 “I CAN SEE IT BEING PLAYED ON MTV”

OVERALL• WE CAN SEE HOW USING AUDIENCE FEEDBACK COULD BE VERY BENEFICIAL FOR IMPROVEMENTS

• ALSO WE CAN SEE HOW AUDIENCE FEEDBACK CAN BE USEFUL WHEN SEEING WHAT WAS MOST MEMORABLE ABOUT MY PRODUCT. FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN WATCHING THE VIDEO A LOT OF PARTICIPANTS REFERRED TO THE KISS NEAR THE END OF THE NARRATIVE. THIS COULD SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT ‘SEX SELLS’ AND THAT IS WHAT AS MADE MY ARTIST MORE MEMORABLE.

• AUDIENCE FEEDBACK IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING PRODUCTS SUCH AS THIS ONE, BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU IDENTIFY WHAT YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE REALLY EXPECT FROM THE MUSIC VIDEOS THAT THEY WATCH. ASKING FOR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ALLOWS THE AUDIENCE TO VOICE WHAT THEY EXPECT FROM MUSIC VIDEOS THROUGH TO WHAT THEY THOUGHT WENT WELL AND WHAT WAS MISSING FROM YOUR EXISTING PRODUCT.

• I HAVE ALSO LEARNT FROM MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK WHAT TYPE OF DATA I.E. QUANTITATIVE OR QUALITATIVE IS MORE USEFUL. FOR EXAMPLE, QUANTITATIVE DATA IS EASIER TO ANALYSE AND COLLATE TO GET A PICTURE OF WHAT WENT WELL ON MY OVERALL PROJECT. HOWEVER QUALITATIVE DATE GIVES YOU A TRUE INSIGHT OF WHAT MY TARGET AUDIENCE THINK OF MY MUSIC VIDEO.
