Welcome to this, our first Annual Review which gives a broad overview of the work of the Havering Theatre Trust in our most recent operating year.
It’s only when you stop to think about it that you realise quite how busy we are, in all sorts of ways and for all sorts of people.

we brought work of high quality to above-average audiences. we have
• produced and presented our resident company cut to the chase... in ten original productions
• hosted a vivid guest season of professional and community work
• delivered a thriving creative learning programme, Q Youth
• developed a new youth company, cut 2
• broadened our work with business and community partners
we made a modest financial surplus in a challenging economic environment; as a charity we can re-invest this surplus into our modest reserves.
As i write this we’re starting the process of business planning for the next five years and even more challenging times. i hope this gives a flavour of how we’re already well-equipped to thrive in them.

Our unique producing model is founded on the resident company of actor-musicians cut to the chase… and a core creative team, all supported by dedicated production, technical, and administrative staff.
we produce and present a wide-ranging populist programme, and this is key to our delivery of public benefit. Our beneficiaries come chiefly from outer east London and essex, and populism with affordability mean that our work is accessible by content and by cost.

76,420 people saw one of 207 performances of a Queen’s Theatre production
This year we set out to make stronger links between our main house productions and the vital theatre-in-education tours which play in schools and colleges throughout the Borough, and beyond.
we commissioned Chris Bond to write two new adaptations of robert Louis Stevenson’s novella – one for the main stage and one to tour schools.

Our dedicated production workshops, as well as wardrobe, stage management and technical departments, also support productions and showings by Q Youth, our large annual workshop programme. This year’s highlight was the Q Youth production virtually Just So, a new script by Philip Ayckbourn.

The producing programme is complemented by a vigorous guest programme of community performances by schools, dance schools and amateur societies, together with professional guest events including comedy, swing, opera and tribute acts.
The foyer stage means that we can programme performances when the main house is in technical rehearsal; it’s a less formal space and perfect for up-and-coming artists to hone their material.

This year we launched our new senior group cut 2, an auditioned group which rehearses for two intensive terms. The performances of David Copperfield fall into the next period (spoiler: they were fantastic); in addition seven members joined the professional company for the run of The Young Ones.
As well as the regular work with young people, our Q Company is for everyone aged 19 and over; and we deliver workshops in schools and colleges, and talks and backstage tours, wherever we’re asked.
Our annual programme Q Youth reaches 170 young people from 8 – 18 on a weekly basis, in seven groups:
Q Club, Q Club ii (8-11)
Q Juniors wednesday, Thursday (drama, 11-16)
Q Dance (13-19)
Cut 2 (16-19)

In particular we work closely with our principal funding body the London Borough of Havering.
Our work of producing, presenting and hosting performances and exhibitions is a key part of Havering’s remarkable cultural offer.
The Queen’s Theatre building itself sits at the geographical centre of the Borough and at the heart of the emerging Cultural Quarter in Hornchurch. The Borough owns the building (so it’s the Trust’s landlord as well), and also funds
us to do minor maintenance on this key cultural asset.
Our second largest funder is Arts Council england; in 2011-12 we were a regularly Funded Organisation and delivered ACe’s objective of Great Art for everyone. From 2012-15 we’re proud to be a part of ACe’s National Portfolio.
we work with east London Dance across all of our programme; we’re a founder member of the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural; and we work closely with Havering Music School, Havering Museum, and Havering College.
OF COUrSe we don’T do THiS all on our own.
There was a modest surplus this year: because we’re a charity, we have re-invested this in our future work.
