We CareThe staff, governors and children would like to offer you a warm welcome to our happy school.

Our learning community works hard together to ensure that each of our children receives an exciting education based on their individual

needs. We pride ourselves in having high expectations for all children.Children leave Queens as confident, responsible citizens who have

developed a firm foundation for their future as life-long learners. This forms the basis of our ethos:

We are lucky that our school serves a diverse and supportive community. We value the support of our parents and carers and believe that it is important that we work closely together to

enable every child to reach their full potential.

We are a Voluntary Controlled (VC) Church of England Junior School, working closely with our local church, St Mary’s, to develop our children’s religious, spiritual, cultural and moral development within a Christian ethos.

We greatly value the richness and variety of our multi-faith school community and have excellent links with all of our local places of worship.

Being SafeQueens is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The headteacher, deputy and learning mentor are trained designated staff for child protection.

All of our children take part in the ‘Being Safe’ curriculum during the school year. Our work is supported by many partners, including the police and health services.

Governors annually review safeguarding and its allied policies.

“We work in pairs, and groups of four and six to talk about our work.”

CurriculumBy the end of Key Stage 2 we want our children to be leaving with a passion for learning in an ever changing global community. To do this, we aim to provide a curriculum that is stimulating and challenges our children to achieve the highest possible standards. We firmly believe in the

development of key skills in English and mathematics.

We believe in an holistic approach to learning, therefore we spend time teaching skills that will allow children to become self-motivated, resourceful and independent learners. We use a

range of teaching and learning methods to do this. Our children have an opportunity to work as a class, in pairs or small groups and with staff on a one to one basis.

Our staff work exceptionally hard to ensure that our children receive the best possible grounding ready for the next phase of their learning journey. We regularly monitor the quality of teaching and progress of our children. At Queens, we understand that we are accountable for the outcomes of our children. Governors, along with the Headteacher and Senior Leaders observe lessons, look at children’s work and talk to parents and staff, in order to help us plan future developments together.

Individual NeedsAt Queens we pride ourselves in meeting the needs of all of the children in our care. The learning

of gifted children is extended.

Any barriers to learning are identified and minimised through early intervention. These needs will be monitored and action taken by the class teacher and/or SEND co-ordinator, following ‘The Code of Practice Guidance for SEN’. Parents are kept informed and involved and we all work together to ensure every child makes good progress. We work in partnership with agencies to meet the needs of our children.

Provision for looked after children is sensitively and appropriately provided, through work with agencies.

Behaviour & RewardsQueens is a happy environment in which children can learn and reach their full potential. We expect our children to be well-behaved, sensible and considerate, so that they develop a sense of self-discipline and accept responsibility for their actions. There is mutual respect between children and staff. We follow the school behaviour policy at all times, instilling the importance that children choose to do ‘the right thing’.

Rewards for good behaviour take the form of praise, stickers and positive reinforcement. Our children earn merit points for both academic and social achievements. Merit Certificates are awarded in our weekly Celebration Assembly, to which parents are warmly invited. ‘Golden Envelopes’ are awarded for exceptional achievement.

Enrichment We aim to provide first hand experiences to promote understanding and enhance as much of our curriculum as possible. This includes a wide range of trips and visitors to help prepare children for adult life.

Our children enjoy special theme days/weeks. Topics include Being Safe/Protective Behaviours, RE, World Book Day, Science, History and Sports. Often the activities occur in

cross class and mixed year groups to promote co operation and collaboration.

We further enrich our curriculum through the use of specialist teachers in modern foreign languages, swimming, physical education and music. All children are able to enjoy learning two Languages, Spanish and French, during their time at Queens. We have links with schools in Spain and Luxembourg.

Our flourishing and talented choir annually attends ‘Young Voices’ at Birmingham’s LG Arena.

We offer a range of after school and lunchtime clubs, many of which are free of charge and provided by specialist instructors.

Breakfast Club is available for all children at Queens from 8am until school starts.

Collective Worship and RE To help reinforce our school values of peace, trust, respect, community and friendship, our school community comes together for a daily act of collective worship broadly of a Christian nature whilst taking into account religious traditions represented in our school. We want our children to become good citizens and these communal times make an important contribution to developing pupils’ appreciation of moral, social and cultural values. There is a Community Assembly one afternoon a week and all parents/carers are invited to attend this important recognition and celebration of the children’s achievements.

We follow the Warwickshire Agreed Syllabus for RE. This entails the children experiencing the principal religious traditions within Great Britain. Our SIAS (church) inspection in April 2010 stated, “The children are proud of the diverse nature of their school and this prepares them well for the future. The school is a model of good practice enabling children to feel part of the wider

family of faith.”

Parents may withdraw their child from Collective Worship or RE. A meeting with the Headteacher is appreciated and provides an opportunity to talk and

move forward together.

“It has been easy to make new friends in my class.”

Awards

Policies

Healthy Schools Status, combined with ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ supports our children and their families in establishing and maintaining life-long healthy eating habits. We are very lucky to have our own on-site kitchen that is staffed by a very helpful catering team. A range of fresh healthy snacks are prepared daily for the tuck shop from which children can buy items during morning break and an equally nourishing lunch is offered, including special meals on theme days, such as Grandparents lunch and Chinese New Year. Food allergies or specific dietary requirements can be accommodated.

Our children turned a disused area of the school ground into a productive garden, and were successful in The Gardening Olympics. The fruit and vegetable patch are a source of produce for our annual Harvest Assembly and is given to local senior citizens in our community.

We achieved the International Schools Award as a result of ensuring a global perspective across the curriculum and school systems.

Basic Skills Quality Mark was awarded as a result of our focus on ensuring all our children are competent in key literacy and numeracy skills.

Sing up Gold Award was achieved through the development of our children’s auditory memory and their good quality singing. Singing has helped us become an even stronger school community.

We comply with the requirements of the following policies, available on request from the School Office.

Race Relations, Sex Discrimination Act, Special Needs, Engaging Parents, Curriculum Polices and Teaching and Learning.
