Every farm business needs a strategy for reducing its costs forsoil tillage and drilling.

Labour and machinery costs, to which soil tillage and seeddrilling contribute a very large proportion, represent around 40%of total costs. Through a carefully designed strategy for minimis-ing soil cultivation, this cost category can be greatly decreased.

Minimal soil tillage can be implemented in a number of ways andmust be adapted to existing conditions. We know that on heavy

soils, a correctly implemented ploughless system produces largesavings. Under other conditions, ploughing according to require-ments can produce the highest returns. On lighter soils, it can be

appropriate to 'minimise' soil tillage to ploughing and Rapiddrilling. The unique aspect of the Rapid system is that it is always

the right choice, regardless of the cropping system. The drillitself intensively cultivates the soil, while at the same time

drilling with high precision under the most variable of condi-tions. After drilling, the soil is re-consolidated to create optimalconditions for germination and the surface is harrowed in order

to retain soil moisture and prevent capping.

This combination of abilities has provided farmers world-widewith a unique implement that reduces the cost of soil tillage and

drilling and often gives increased yields.

Rapid is fantastic in allsituations - ploughed, mini-mum tillage or directdrilled. With VäderstadRapid you obtain a power-ful, soil cultivating drillthat produces qualityresults under all condi-tions.

Rapid is right regardless ofcropping system It makes no difference whether youwant to drill directly into stubble, after ploughing or after minimaltillage. Thanks to its powerful tool-bar and the soil cultivating abilityof its seed coulter discs, Rapid candrill in all conditions. You save onthe number of passes neededbefore drilling. The high coulterpressure gives good penetrationability and very good possibilitiesfor direct drilling.

Both light and heavy soilThe Rapid drill does the sameexcellent job on both light andheavy soil. With the right attach-ments, Rapid is able to cultivateand drill everything from the heavi-est, most difficult clays to lightersandy soils.

With Rapid you can drilleverything from small-seed-ed crops such as grass andrape to large-seeded typessuch as maize, sunflowersand beans. Changing between different cropsonly requires one easy action.

Faster drillingOver the past decade, Rapid hasalso established itself as a chal-lenger to precision drills for estab-lishing maize. The main advantageis much faster drilling. The drillingcapacity for the same workingwidth is 2 – 3 times greater withRapid than with a precision drill.

This is due in part to the largehopper on the Rapid and in part toits ability to drill at higher speedswhile maintaining accurate seedplacement.

Fewer soil cultivationsSince Rapid itself carries out inten-sive soil cultivation, this makes aconsiderable saving on the numberof passes before drilling. Together, this means that both the time andcost of establishing a hectare ofmaize or sunflowers are consider-ably lower with Väderstad Rapid. All this saves money!

The high capacity of theRapid drill means that thebest days can be used fordrilling. Driving in the fieldin poor conditions cantherefore be avoided.

With Rapid you can drill at very highspeeds without affecting seed place-ment, 13 – 14 km/hr is a commondriving speed. Together with thelarge hopper, this gives a highcapacity and a high number ofhectares drilled per hour.Depending on model, you can drill10 – 50 ha wheat per refill. Drillingrate is over 1 ha/hr per metre work-ing width. It is not uncommon forfarms to drill 5000 ha per year withRapid.

Better timing and timesavingThe high capacity of the Rapid drillallows you to wait for the right timefor drilling. This means that drillingcan be carried out in optimal condi-

tions and in good time. You savetime and avoid driving in the fieldin unfavourable conditions.

The robust construction ofthe Rapid drill includes fewmoving parts and high qual-ity steel and gives animpressively long lifetimeand low maintenancerequirement.

The maintenance-free and practi-cally indestructible rubber suspen-sion gives the machine a goodcontouring action.

Long lifetimeThe rubber suspension efficientlyabsorbs impacts and collisions. Ittherefore increases the lifetime ofdiscs and bearings. This is one ofthe explanations for Rapid'simpressive lifetime - around the

world there are Rapid machinesthat have drilled 30,000 ha and arestill in operation.

Durable discsBoth the seed discs and SystemDisc are manufactured fromspecially hardened steel, which isboth hard and tough for maximumwear resistance. This steel is calledV55, V for Väderstad and 55 for thedegree of hardness in HRC. V55means that the discs have almostdouble the hardness of normalwearing parts and have impressivedurability.

Low maintenance require-mentV55 discs have shown to havealmost double the lifetime of previ-ous discs made from conventionalmaterial. Maintenance is thereforeminimised. The larger disc diame-ter reduces further the need formaintenance. A 6 metre machinecan in many cases drill more than 3 000 ha before replacing wearparts.

Coulter tip stays sharp andpointed for longer A sharp coulter tip maintains seedplacement precision for a longtime. The coulter tip has an effi-cient wear guard of wolframcarbide, which is many times hard-er than hardened steel and gives animpressive resistance to wear. Thismeans that the coulter tip stayssharp and pointed even after manyhectares of drilling.

High quality gives long life

Investing in Rapid greatlydecreases your tillage anddrilling costs.

It some cases it is possible to drilldirectly after ploughing, in othercases after one or two Carrier culti-vations.

Saves passes Regardless of the cropping systemyou choose, the Rapid drill reducesthe number of passes and soiltillage costs are greatly reduced.

Minimal idle timeThe robust design makes themachine simple to service and easyto manage. This together with theresilience of its wearing partsmeans that idle time is minimisedand operating costs can be verylow.

Long life and good resalevalue The impressive lifetime of theRapid drill gives it a high resalevalue. Rapid is a sought-aftermachine on the second-handmarket, which makes it easy totrade in for a new Rapid when thetime comes.

Combi drilling wins in the long runCombi drilling gives higheryields and reliable cropnutrient effect regardless ofthe weather. In addition, time and costs are reducedwhen the number of passesdecreases. This gives crop-ping security and better netgains.

The combi drilling principle isobvious - plant nutrients are placedwhere the roots are growing.

Higher yieldsThis gives higher yields of springcrops, according to many trialsover a number of years. The yieldincrease is perhaps the mostconvincing reason for combi-drilling. Another advantage is thatcombi drilling saves on passes, since fertiliser and seed drillingtake place at the same time.

More efficient use of nitro-genAt the same time as crop yieldincreases, nitrogen use is improvedbecause it becomes more efficient. In trials in France (Arvalis, Soufflet,EMC2), the same yield wasobtained at a lower nitrogen dosecompared with broadcasting.

Combi drilling saved between 15and 30 kg nitrogen/ha. Croppingsecurity increases when theprotein content can be controlled, which is important in crops whereprotein quality determines thegrain quality.

Exact placementTo be successful, the fertiliser mustbe placed correctly beside andbeneath the seed. The roots thenaccess the plant nutrients quicklybut do not risk tissue burn. Placingthe fertiliser 2 - 3 cm under the seedgives a good margin. A recentSwedish study (Haby 2006)confirmed that it was better toincorporate the fertiliser betweenthe seed rows than within them.Placing both in the same rowhampered emergence because oftissue burn and decreased yield by

8% or 600 kg/ha. Keeping seed andfertiliser separated gives the bestsecurity in the long run.

Better even in rainThe advantages of combi drillingare independent of the weather. Intrials, no correlation was foundbetween rainfall amount and theyield increase of combi drilling. Inaddition, weed competition isimproved when the crop overshad-ows weeds faster and maturesmore uniformly. These are thesmall but significant beneficialeffects of combi drilling. They addto other advantages such as higheryield, more reliable plant nutritioneffect and cropping profits.

Zone 1 Zon

Väderstad Rapid works thesoil so thoroughly that it isoften possible to drill direct-ly after ploughing withsuccessful results. Theunique depth control allowsdrilling to be carried out athigh speed, which gives animpressive capacity.

Zone 1 - Cultivates and levelsThe toolbar cultivates and levelsthe soil. The intensity can beadjusted hydraulically from thedriving position on the go to matchwhat the conditions require.Depending on your needs, you canchoose between three differentsystems, each by itself or in combi-nation: • System Crossboard• System Agrilla• System Disc

Zone 2 - Cultivates and drillsfertiliser/seed The fertiliser and seed discs cut upthe soil and create a fine tilth. Atthe same time, the fertiliser isplaced midway between seed rowsat an optimal depth just below seeddepth. If Rapid is being used forseed only, the fertiliser coulterscan be completely raised up toavoid wear, or used for soil cultiva-tion. The seed is then placed at thepreset depth in moist, undisturbedsoil. The seed is covered by finesoil created by the 'sawtooth'edges of the discs.

The large diameter of the seed discs and System Disc toolbar (410 mm) give Rapid its unbelievable versatility, which coverseverything from direct drilling to conventional drilling.

The seed is placed just below cultivation depth of the toolbar and istherefore surrounded by moist soil, which gives optimal conditionsfor germination.

12.5 cm row spacing formaximum yieldRapid places seed at 12.5 cm rowspacing. Swedish research hasdemonstrated 5 - 10% higher yieldswhen row spacing is 9 - 12 cmcompared with 18 - 25 cm. Theadvantages of optimal row spacingare due to factors such asincreased ear production andfaster soil coverage by the crop sothat evaporation is lower. Thefaster soil cover also provides thecrop with considerably highercompetitive ability against weeds.

Zone 3 - Reconsolidates andloosensThe packer wheels break up clodsand press them down. Each wheelreconsolidates the soil over tworows of seed and one row of fertilis-er. The seed is thus well bedded inand provided with optimum condi-tions for germination. The furrowleft in the soil after the seed discprovides a path for the growingseedling and emergence is high anduniform. The following harrowwhen used aggressively harrowsup a loose evaporation barrier thatprevents surface crusting afterheavy rain.

Rapid with the right tool-bar provides you with thepotential to achieve thealmost impossible.

System CrossboardSystem Crossboard consists ofdouble rows of hardenedCrossboard tines, which can befitted with different tools depend-ing on the conditions. Angled wear-ing steel provides aggressive culti-vation. Because the Crossboardtines do not draw up stones,System Crossboard is suitable forstony fields and levels the surfaceefficiently after ploughing.

System AgrillaSystem Agrilla consists of one ortwo rows of Agrilla tines in combi-nation with a Crossboard row.System Agrilla has its rightful placeon lighter soils where thoroughloosening is required or on soilswhere the surface is hard. Thetines efficiently rip loose largeamounts of material which theCrossboard then breaks up.System Agrilla efficiently inter-rupts capillary transport of waterto the surface, levels the field afterploughing and moves fine materialdown into the seedbed.

System Disc System Disc is our most flexibletoolbar and the most popularchoice. It consists of two rows ofintensively working and slicingdiscs (410 mm diameter) that areslightly conical in shape. In addi-tion, a row of Crossboard tineslevels the soil surface and breaksup clods. System Disc slices inex-orably through hard clods andrough furrows and has its rightfulplace in direct drilling, ploughlessdrilling in heavy crop trash, drillingafter ploughing and when anextraordinary degree of soil culti-vation is required.

Stable depth controlOne of the great advantages of theRapid drill is its ingenious depthcontrol system. Each wheel in thepacker roll guides two seed coul-ters to a preset drilling depth, while at the same time applyingcareful reconsolidation. This takesplace continuously, without anydelay and with good contouring.

Hardwearing rubbersuspensionThe maintenance-free and practi-cally indestructible rubber suspen-sion absorbs impacts and colli-sions, which markedly increasesthe lifetime of discs and bearingsand therefore of the entire drill. It isalso one of the secrets behind theRapid drill's renowned resistanceto stones. The rubber suspensiongives the entire machine a smooth, quiet and even action and is one ofthe explanations for the ability ofthe machine to drill at high speedwhile maintaining excellent seedplacement.

Not sensitive to stonesThe depth control system on theRapid drill gives the seed coultersa smooth and stable passage evenin stony conditions. The rubbersuspension allows each individualdisc to rebound by up to 15 cm toavoid damage during collisionswith stones. This gives goodprotection and extends the lifetimeof seed discs, seed coulters andbearings. In addition, Rapid discsdo not draw up stones in the sameway that tines do, which is a greatadvantage when drilling on stonyground.

THE RAPID PRINCIPLE

17

Seed placed in moist soilRapid drills at 12.5 cm spacing foroptimal establishment. The seeddisc cuts a small slit under thecultivated soil and places the seedin moist soil. This is one of theexplanations for the good anduniform emergence. To achievethis, drilling depth should alwaysbe slightly deeper than cultivationdepth of the Rapid toolbar. Theseed is covered by fine soil createdby the toolbar, seed discs andfollowing harrow.

Sharp seed discsThe scalloped discs (410 mm dia-meter) of special hardened steelwork aggressively in the soil. Thediscs cut powerfully down into thesoil and provide Rapid with its abil-ity to drill in the most variableconditions. The discs and seedcoulters efficiently clear strawfrom the seed slits. No pan is creat-ed during cultivation and the discsdo not have to be adjusted to main-tain drilling depth.

A) Minimal maintenance The disc bearings on Rapid discsare multi-sealed, very resistant toimpacts and have a long lifetime. A few pumps from a grease gunafter washing at the end of theseason removes condensation andany accumulated dirt and lubri-cates the bearings.

B) Moveable coultersThe coulters can be movedupwards by a simple action. This isnecessary when the discs becomeworn or when drilling in largeamounts of crop trash, when thediscs have to cut a little deeper inrelation to the seed coulters. Theseed coulters must always beplaced higher than the discs inorder to protect the coulters fromstone collisions.

Reconsolidation gives optimal germReconsolidation over theseed rowsEach wheel reconsolidates the soilover two rows of seed and one rowof fertiliser. Reconsolidationensures good contact between soiland seed, and therefore goodwater supply to the germinatingseed.

Large wheelsThe large wheel diameter in thepacker roll (740 mm) makes it easi-er to work in wet conditions. It alsoreduces the drag, thus decreasingthe draught requirement.

OffSet increases capacityOffSet means that alternate wheelsin the packer roll have beendisplaced 190 mm backwards on aseparate axle. This creates a chan-nel between alternate wheelsthrough which soil and harvesttrash can flow and pass out behindthe seed drill. This prevents soilwalling up in front of the wheel row, which is an advantage on very lightsoils. OffSet also allows drillingunder much tougher conditionsand gives the drill a lower draughtrequirement.

Contouring packer rollThe wheels in the packer rollfollow the soil contours, whichensure uniform reconsolidation onboth even and uneven soil. This isachieved through the wheels beingattached separately on the wheelbeam. This creates equally goodgermination conditions across theentire width.

Levelling/reconsolidationeven before drillingBefore drilling, the soil is consoli-dated by the tractor wheels. Thepivot packer (A) on Rapid ensuresthat the same reconsolidation isexerted on areas between tractorwheels. On Rapid RDA, wing pack-ers (B) can also be added for corre-sponding reconsolidation outsidethe tractor wheels. When drillingdirectly after ploughing on lightsoils, this is the best system toachieve uniform conditions forgermination over the whole width.

A. Flexible pivot packerA pivot packer enhances the abilityof the drill to cultivate the soil andseed in practically all conditions. The pivot packer has four or sixpivoting wheels that followthrough in turning and give theentire machine unbeatable respon-siveness and a very small turningcircle on headlands. The six-wheeled pivot packer gives 50%better carrying capacity. Thisoption is an advantage on verylight soils to prevent the pivotpacker sinking too low (optional).

B. Wing packerOn Rapid RDA, the seed drill can becomplemented with wing packersthat consolidate the soil in front ofthe wing sections. This improvesemergence on light soils.

Effective after-tillage

Easy tyre changeThe wheels are individually mounted, which makes it easier to changetyres after a puncture.

Following harrow preservessoil moisture The tines of the following harrowloosen the surface layer betweenthe seed rows and prevent surfacecrusting and drying of theseedbed. The tines are 12 mm indiameter, slightly curved and arespaced at 125 mm intervals.

Low-lift position on head-landsWith low-lift position on head-lands, the following harrowremains in its working positionduring turning and harrows awayall tracks left by the wheels of trac-tor and drill. The headland is lefttrackless and the seed can germi-nate in a loose soil layer. In addi-tion, turning is faster.

Pre-emergence markersshow tramlinesWhile tramlines are being placed, two markers are lowered hydrauli-cally at the same time. Fertiliserand sprayer passes before emer-gence can then use these marks asguidelines. Pre-emergence markingalso gives the seed drill operator afull picture of where the tramlinesare placed.

Control-Station providesinformation and controlWith Control-Station, many func-tions can be controlled from thecab and the drill operator receivesall information in a clear and easilyviewed way. Warnings andmessages appear in clear text inone of the 15 pre-programmedlanguages. Control-Station isequipped with both light andsound signals and the display isilluminated for easy reading duringnight work. Large buttons make iteasy to use.

Remote control meteringrateControl-Station can be fitted withan extra unit for remote control offertiliser and/or seed rate (stan-dard on Rapid RDA and optional onRapid RD). The operation can becarried out in comfort from thedriving seat. The driver receivesclear information on the settingand the rate can be increased ordecreased in programmable steps,e.g. 10% up or down for each pressof the button. If Control-Station isconnected to GPS, this adjustmentcan be made automatically.

Half-drill shutoffOn RDA 600 and 800, half the work-ing width of the drill can be shut offvia Control-Station. At the sametime, the exact dose is maintained. This is very useful when e.g.drilling on irregularly shaped fieldsto avoid double drilling and croplodging. A single press on aControl-Station button shuts offhalf the drill with immediate effectand re-opens it again as easily. OnCombi models, both fertiliser andseed metering can be shut off.

Exact metering systemThe metering system on Rapid RDis simple yet ingenious, and givesprecise metering of seed sizesfrom rape to beans, regardless ofdriving speed.

1. A large, stable drivewheelfollows the soil surface and drivesthe gearbox.

2. The desired seed rate is set onthe stepless gearbox.

3. The gearbox for fertiliserand/or seed metering can befitted with electronic control fromControl-Station, so that the dosecan be adjusted on the go inprogrammable steps, e.g. 10% upor down.

4. The cell wheel provides acontinuous flow of seed to theseed coulters. When small-seededcrops are being drilled, only thefine cell wheel is used, to furtherincrease the precision. Meteringof amounts down to approx. 1kg/ha can be achieved with goodprecision.

5. The bottom flap is set accord-ing to seed size. It also has a stonerelease mechanism so if a stone isaccidentally included with theseed, the bottom flap springs outand the ratchet wheel is keptintact.

6. The stirrer axle ensures acontinuous flow of seed.

Easy rate testThe metering rate can be testedquickly and easily by placing thetest bag under the seed housingand making a number of turnsdirectly on the gearbox. The mech-anism can be calibrated by asimple adjustment to the scale onthe gearbox. The metering rate ischanged linearly in relation to thisscale. Rate testing can be carriedout with equal ease for bothfertiliser and seed.

6 - 8 m JumboRapid RDA 600J and 800J are thegiants of the Väderstad drills. Withtheir 6000 L hopper, the loadcapacity is impressive and idletime is reduced to a minimum. Theintegral pivot packer bears part ofthe load and thanks to the guidelinkage, the machine is incrediblymanoeuvrable on headlands. Thenarrow transport width of 3 mallows fast and safe movementbetween fields. • 6 or 8 m working width• 6000 l seed hopper• 7 - 11 ha/hr• 70 -100 ha/day• 25 - 30 ha wheat/refill• 200 - 350 hp draught requirement

Fertiliser metered out byauger An hydraulically-driven augermeters fertiliser directly out intothe air flow in the distributorhead. If the entire drill is being

used for seed, the auger rotates inthe opposite direction, transport-ing seed to the front hopper whereit can be metered out by the Fenixmetering system. This change iseasily made using a lever.

6 - 8 m, CombiRapid drills are renowned forprecision, enormous capacity andcost savings. The Rapid RDA 600Cand 800C models give even greatercapacity. The hopper has anadjustable partition wall dividingseed and fertiliser. The entirehopper can also be used for seedalone, giving a total volume of 6000litres. For wheat drilling, thismeans approx. 20 - 50 ha per seedrefill. Seed rate controlled by soilradar The seed rate is controlled withthe help of soil radar so that itremains constant regardless ofdriving speed. During work, thesoil radar (1) measures speed andsends information to the Control-Station (2), which controls thehydraulic motors of the seedmetering units (3). This alwaysallows an exact amount of seed tobe metered out in relation to driv-ing speed. A tried and tested solu-tion without mechanical wear thatgives precision and is generallymaintenance-free.

Exact metering systemThe Fenix pneumatic seed meteringsystem can handle all seed sizeswithout any parts having to beexchanged. Thanks to the hydraulicoperation, high rates can be drilledwithout driving speed having to bereduced. The RDA 600 - 800 modelshave two metering units, so half-drill shutoff is standard.

A. A cell wheel provides a continu-ous flow of seed. During drilling ofsmall-seeded crops the opening ofthe slot is reduced, increasing therotation speed and the precision. The system gives exact metering ofboth small and large seeds, at ratesfrom 1.5 kg/ha up to 500 kg/ha. Theseed rate can be easily varied onthe go via Control-Station.

B. The transparent lid of thedistributor head allows any block-ages to be seen. The tramliningfunction is easy to inspect and canbe easily set. The seed from theclosed hoses is returned to thehopper, so the exact amount ofseed is maintained in the othercoulters.

Easy calibrationFill the calibration bag using theconveniently positioned remotecontrol beside the fan. Weigh thesample and enter the value inControl-Station in the tractor cab.Control-Station itself then meas-ures the relationship between theamount metered out and thenumber of turns the metering unitshas rotated. This calibrates thesystem. The desired seed rate inkg/ha can then be entered directlyin Control-Station.

Always correct air flow The hydraulic fan is superior to aPTO-driven version since it alwaysgives the correct air flow, regard-less of the tractor rev count. Fanrev count is monitored by bothlight and sound signals via Control-Station in the tractor cab. OnRDAC, separate fans are used forseed and fertiliser. The rev count iseasily adjusted with the tractorhydraulics.

Fast and accurate setting ofdrilling depthThe hydraulic Master-and-Slavesystem allows easy, fast and accu-rate setting of drilling depth acrossthe entire width of the drill. Drillingdepth is set by moving the depthstop on the Master cylinder (A).The Slave cylinders (B) on the sidesections follow with millimetreprecision. The hydraulic system isself-compensating and every lift tothe top position triggers automaticair-bleeding and calibration.

GROWERS' EXPERIENCES

34

The overall picture was the deci-ding factor when the JordbergaEstate in southern Sweden investedin a new seed drill in autumn 2006.Economy, flexibility and drillingquality meant that the choice wasonce again an 8-metre Rapid, thistime with the System Disc toolbar.

In 1994, Jordberga's first Rapidarrived on the farm. From the firstminute, every wearing part replacedduring the period 1994 - 2006, whenthe drill worked 14,000 ha, was care-fully recorded. There were initialsuspicions that the maintenancecosts would be high, but these fearsproved to be unfounded. The figuresspeak for themselves.- Maintenance costs come to 2 €/ha,reports inspector Claes-EricClaesson, having studied the print-out from the computer where Rapidseed drill costs are recorded. He believes that this is low andcompares all the saved cultivationsat 11 €/ha allowed by the Rapid drill, but not its predecessor. Even at thispoint, the calculation shows a posi-tive result.

High second-hand valueDepreciation is also low. The wellmaintained drill recovered 40% ofthe purchase price when it left thefarm. With the help of a mini-calcula-tor, Claes-Eric Claesson divided thedepreciation over the 14,000hectares the machine had drilled atJordberga over its 12 years.- It comes to 1,8 € per hectare. With all the data on the sheet in frontof him, he reaches his conclusion:-You can't operate much cheaper! The financial aspect was a strongargument when the old Rapid drillreached pension age. Added to thiswere soft values such as faultlessservice. Nevertheless, he wanted totest other seed drill brands beforemaking the important investmentdecision. In spring 2006, he thereforedrilled peas with a different seeddrill to widen the perspective. -But we couldn't get the coulter pres-sure up and therefore we couldn'tget the peas down!He was not accustomed to this, so inthe drilling quality round, the scorewas 1-0 to Rapid

More efficient crop produc-tion nowProgress has not stood still atJordberga during the 22 years thatClaes-Eric Claesson has managedoperations. In 1984, the estateconsisted of 800 ha with 8 employ-ees.- That was 75/ha per employee andwas considered efficient at the time. Now the farm comprises 1600 ha and6 employees, which is almost 270ha/employee. Rationalisationincreased pace when Jordberga'sfirst Rapid arrived for spring tillagein 1994. - At that time we had three cultiva-tors and a seed drill. Now we haveone cultivator and one Rapid. This is possible through the toolbaron Rapid reducing the number ofpasses before drilling.

All doors openSystem Disc with cultivating discswere chosen for the new JordbergaRapid. Claes-Eric Claesson hopesthat this will make cropping evenmore efficient, both when ploughingand when choosing not to plough.

- With System Disc, it should beenough to have a single pass withCarrier before winter wheat drillingwhen the preceding crop is winteroilseed rape and we don't plough. Each such operation savesJordberga 17,7 €/ha, since theSystem Disc toolbar on Rapid acts asa soil cultivator and replaces a passwith Carrier. Claes-Eric Claesson emphasises thathe does not want to tie himself to asingle system for soil tillage. Inautumn 2005, he made just one passwith a cultivator directly after sugar-beet. Then the field was allowed tolie over winter and in spring 2006 itwas direct-drilled with Rapid with-out harrowing. - It was easy and worked extremelywell.

Praises freedom of choiceIn autumn 2006, the oppositeoccurred. Almost 300 mm of rain fellin August. This meant that ploughingwas the best method for erasing thetracks left by the harvester andbaler.- One shouldn't be locked into onemethod. The flexibility provided bySystem Disc is an important compo-nent in increasing freedom of choice. -Flexibility is the key to cropping. Iget that flexibility with Rapid. Finally, he advises others to drillheadlands last, so that the carryingwheels on the Rapid seed drill do notcompact them. This happened onJordberga before they discoveredthis tip. However, it is the advan-tages that make the greatest impres-sion.- We have much better emergence. Itis worth a lot on large farms to beable to rely on establishment.

Crop production on Jordbergain 2007:• 260 ha sugarbeet• 40 ha winter oilseed rape• 850 ha winter wheat• 60 ha processing peas• 200 ha malting barley• 80 ha spring wheat• 120 ha set-asideTotal 1610 ha

Faster and cheaper drilling of winter wheat with Rapid and without the plough

Before 1994, crop production on Jordberga took place without Rapid. The soil was, and stillis, always ploughed after a cereal crop before autumn tillage. In the past it was then harrowedand rolled five times after ploughing so that the previous seed drill could establish winterwheat adequately (A). Today the ploughed soil only needs levelling with Carrier beforesuccessful seed drilling with Rapid (B). When preceding crops and weather permit, plough-ing before winter wheat is omitted on Jordberga. Instead, one pass with Carrier is sufficientbefore drilling, since System Disc on Rapid carries out an additional cultivation (C).
