January Artist of the Month

Mary Ann St. Peters studied fine arts at the Loveland Arts Academy and the Denver Student Artist League. She has studied with Colorado wild life artist Lani Vlaanderen, was a member of the Colorado Coalition of Artists, the Artist’s Association of Northern Colorado. She was a participating member of the Art on Mountain Gallery in Fort Collins and also shared a studio with the Poudre River Association of Artists. Lately Mary Ann concentrated on painting domestic and farm animals. Felines and canines are her favorite subjects and cats Moses and Josephina were her most dependable models. She is looking forward to painting javelinas instead of piggies and ravens instead of robins. Contact her:

Jim Asbell and Walk the Walk

IN MEMORY OF JIM ASBELL If you met Jim Asbell, you met someone who was fun loving, not afraid of showing his true colors, (yellow and green for the Oregon Ducks,) a very upbeat man who not only taught us how to live life to the end but how to enjoy every moment. After he was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer he wrote a book “Live Well With Terminal Illness and Other Crappy Diseases.” He wrote a personal blog on social media and articles of his cancer journey for the GV News. He was an artist who was commissioned to paint over 100 fun pictures of other people’s pets. Jim Asbell was our survivor speaker and one of the top fundraisers for the 2017 GV/Sahuarita Relay For Life event at Rancho Sahuarita. Jim arrived wearing a headband of a cork screw going through his head and wore a red cape. He was fighting his disease with humor. The 2018 Quail Creek Relay For Life team will walk in Jim’s Memory at the April 14 Relay event. The Rancho Resort Clubhouse site, at 15900 S Rancho Resort Blvd, Sahuarita, AZ will host the 2018 event starting at 11:00 am with opening ceremonies, the cancer survivor lap, the caregiver lap, and the Relay team lap. The free survivor/caregiver meal provided by Twist n Shout will be served around Noon. From then on someone from each team will be walking a lap in honor or in memory of those who have been touched by cancer until 9:00 pm. We will be celebrating more cancer survivor birthdays with music and special laps such as the umbrella lap that represents melanoma cancer, the decorated bra lap representing breast cancer, etc. At dark the luminaria lap takes place with participants holding a light stick while walking along a path of lighted luminaria bags. Jim’s name and the names of others who have lost their cancer battle or are in their cancer journey will be read out loud. This is a very moving and memorable time for us all to remember our loved ones and be thankful for those who survive cancer. It is a time to reflect on why we work so hard to find a cure for cancer. To donate to Jim Asbell’s fundraising efforts, to join or follow the team, go to www.relayforlife.org/gvsahuaritaaz. Click on Jim Asbell’s name to donate to his fundraising account. To join or follow the team, click on the Quail Creek Fights Back team name. To have a luminaria bag decorated in Jim’s name (suggested donation $5.00 to the American Cancer Society) contact Ginny at [email protected].

Want to Try a Quick Draw? This is an event for artists of all levels to enjoy the congeniality of painting together. Each person would be given 2 hours to complete a project in any media or combination of media. The participants could pick any subject matter and can plan ahead or even practice ahead of time what they want to paint. Photos or pictures can be used for subjects. Students can redo projects they completed for their classes. Members will be invited to circulate among the participants during the 2-hour period, watching and conversing with the artists. At the end of the 2-hour period a “Show & Tell” will be held for the artists to display and talk about their work. There will be no judging of the completed projects, some people may not complete the project in the allotted time, but the members will still enjoy hearing about their planned work. Judy McCormick will bring this up for discussion at the January meeting and set a date.
