Welcome

If you make a change and it feels comfortable, you haven’t made a

change. Lee Trevino - Golfer

Saturday, 3 October 2009As teachers and educators, we see first hand what our students are doing and how they are interacting with their peers, parents and the world around them. Have we really changed our pedagogy, curriculum or structure?

had an iphone or ipod touch

Saturday, 3 October 2009100% of students had a mobile phone - close to 50% of this class had a phone with 3G capabilities. This is in a school with a traditionally low socio-economic background.

Today we will look at the first 3 apps in depth and how they can be used in Education. In the closing stages I will show you some other apps that are available to download. The key to remember is that the app store is constantly changing.

Page 15: Qsite Conference

Apps

Saturday, 3 October 2009

So what is Evernote? How can we use Evernote in class?

Page 16: Qsite Conference

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Evernote is great. Any site you come across, you can tag it. It is the new bookmark. But wait there is more. You can add voice memos (on ipod touch version 2 and iPhones) and photos on the iPhone. You can even link your twitter account to Evernote and send tweets to yourself so that don’t forget something.

Page 17: Qsite Conference

Evernote

Saturday, 3 October 2009

You need to register with Evernote before you can use it. Remember to get the most out of this app, you should also have it installed on your computer as well. www.evernote.com

Who hasn’t heard of twitter? Who has a twitter account? What do you use it for? Can it be used in schools?

Page 19: Qsite Conference

Twitter Apps - TweetDeck

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Keeping up to date with current affairs has never been easier with Twitter. TweetDeck is a twitter client that allows you to follow trending topics. Here are two screen shots 30 seconds apart after the Tsunami warning went out as well as the earthquake in Sumatra.

So how can we use this in a school setting?

The thing to remember about twitter is that it is all about who you follow.

Page 20: Qsite Conference

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Can Twitter be used in schools? Yes it needs to be monitored - just like research. Is it a lot of verbal diarrhea? Yes and No. Condensing your thoughts/questions to 140 characters (28 words approximately) requires some skill.

Page 21: Qsite Conference

What is a PLN?

Why have a PLN?

Who is in your PLN?

Watch who follows you

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Especially in schools you need to watch who follows you. I manage my account at least once a week to block people unsuitable for my PLN.

Page 22: Qsite Conference

how is twitter being used in schools?

twitter in schools

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Twitter is amazing. Like Shrek and his view on Ogres. Twitter is like an onion - They have layers. Look at the layers of engagement Twitter can offer.

Page 23: Qsite Conference

6 reasons why educators should get involved with

Twitter?1. Together we’re better

2. Global or local: you choose

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Twitter can be like a virtual staffroom where teachers can access in seconds a stream of links, ideas, opinions, and resources from a hand-picked selection of global professionals.

2 With Twitter, educators can actively compare what’s happening in their with others on different continents. GPS-enabled devices and advanced web search facility allow searches that tell you what people are tweeting within a certain distance of a location, so if the other side of the world isn’t your bag, you can stick with your own patch.

Page 24: Qsite Conference

3. Ideas workshop and sounding board

4. Newsroom and innovation showcase

Saturday, 3 October 2009

3 Twitter is a great medium for sharing ideas and getting instant feedback. You can gather a range of opinions and constructive criticism within minutes, which can help enormously, whether you are planning a learning experience, writing a policy, or putting a job application together. 4 Twitter helps you stay up-to-date on news and current affairs, as well as on the latest developments in areas of interest like school leadership and technology.

Page 25: Qsite Conference

5. Quality Assured searching

6. Getting with the times has never been so easy! -- By Laura Walker. Follow Mrs. Walker on Twitter

Saturday, 3 October 2009

5 Trust the people you follow. Hone and develop the list of people whose insights you value. Once your Twitter network grows past a critical mass, you can ask them detailed questions and get higher-quality information back than a Google search would generally provide. 6 A little light searching using key words for your areas of interest will soon yield a list of interesting people to follow. Your biggest challenge is likely to be getting the twitter unblocked on your school network if your main usage will be at school.

Documents

Saturday, 3 October 2009INCLUDES★ Latest iSpreadsheet (mobile spreadsheet app)★ Text Editor (Easy to use text pad)★ Google Sync (Upload & Download directly to Google)★ Photo Album (Photo manager)★ Direct Email (Email any documents to anyone)★ Integrated Preview (Preview any known document)

This is great because you can share your google documents with your students and truly allow collaborative learning in and outside your class.

Page 27: Qsite Conference

DropBox and iDisk

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Both these apps are relatively new. Dropbox is for everybody. iDisk is really only for MobileMe subscribers. The fantastic thing about them is that a student need not say he or she has lost their USB thumb drive again.File SyncDropbox allows you to sync your files online and across your computers automatically.

• 2GB of online storage for free, with up to 100GB available to paying customers.

• Sync files of any size or type.

• Sync Windows, Mac and Linux computers.
