Background

The modern analytics era began with the launch of QlikView, our classic analytics solution, and the game-

changing Associative Engine it is built on. QlikView dominated the market, as the platform of choice for

nearly two decades. The innovations Qlik brought to market revolutionized the way organizations use data

with intuitive visual discovery that put business intelligence into the hands of more people than ever.

Customers readily adopted QlikView to solve business problems because it allowed them to rapidly

create highly interactive dashboards and analytics apps without dependence on stack technology.

QlikView drove tremendous value for customers of all shapes and sizes, across all major industries and

geographies.

In 2014, we advanced the revolution by introducing Qlik Sense, our next-generation modern platform

for end-to-end self-service-oriented analytics. Qlik Sense supports the full range of analytics use cases

across an organization—from self-service visualization and exploration to guided analytics apps and

dashboards, custom and embedded analytics, advanced mobile analytics, and reporting. And it does

this within a governed, multi-cloud architecture that delivers maximum trust, scale, and flexibility. With

unmatched associative exploration capabilities (running on our Associative Engine), alongside augmented

intelligence functionality, Qlik Sense drives data literacy for all types of users.

The Qlik Associative Engine is radically different from query-based tools that limit flexibility resulting in

blind spots. It supports near limitless combinations of data sources, leaving no data behind. And, it allows

people to explore freely using interactive selection and search, without restrictions or boundaries.

What makes Qlik Sense different?

Qlik Sense is not a new version of QlikView. While both are built on our Associative Engine and have similar

core capabilities, differences in design reflect both modernized technology and the evolution of customer

needs in the market.

Qlik Sense sets the benchmark for 3rd-gen analytics platforms, empowering everyone to see the whole

story that lives within their data. It supports the entire analytics life-cycle, from data preparation to

visualization to exploration and collaboration, with augmented intelligence capabilities to accelerate

tasks and reveal new insights. Its multi-cloud architecture supports seamless deployment across

combinations of on-premise and cloud sites, as well as online and offline mobility. And open APIs make

it easy for web developers with standard skill sets to build custom applications and embed analytics. In

contrast, QlikView is a development environment requiring QlikView-specific skills to build and deliver

interactive guided analytics applications and dashboards to users.

Looking toward the future, many organizations

like yours are taking on modernization initiatives,

and we are too. One example is our new unified

licensing, which aligns Qlik products under a

one user, one license, one analytics experience

strategy. This brings the products closer together

and provides a single license key to access more

than one Qlik product, starting with QlikView

and Qlik Sense. Unified licensing is enabled by

the Qlik Licensing Service, a license management

mechanism used to activate licenses, and provide

visibility and monitoring of license use.

You don’t have to choose between QlikView

and Qlik Sense.

As a QlikView customer, the QlikView and Qlik

Sense Dual Use licensing offer gives you a

cost-effective way to adopt Qlik Sense while

maintaining your QlikView footprint. By entitling

you to Qlik Sense, in addition to QlikView, Dual

Use provides you with freedom of choice and

greater control over Qlik product usage, allowing

you to adopt Qlik Sense at your own pace.

Dual Use licensing offers you the flexibility of

either Perpetual or Subscription-based licensing.

For a modest uplift on your Annual QlikView

maintenance, your QlikView users receive

equivalent access to Qlik Sense, including the

value-add products that come with it. Starting

with April 2019 releases, you’ll also be able to

leverage the Qlik Sense Hub to access both

QlikView and Qlik Sense, available with our Qlik

Cloud Services and Kubernetes deployment

options. We find the most common initial Qlik

Sense implementations, as part of Dual Use, are

for new apps and new use cases.

As you begin to adopt Qlik Sense, you’ll discover

many QlikView apps can be migrated easily, as

QlikView data models and analytics expressions

can be re-used in Qlik Sense. To see which

can download the free QlikView Governance

Dashboard and analyze your apps by clicking the

Sense Profile Score. We plan to invest heavily in

the Qlik Sense platform, with innovations across

the entire product.
