WOSU + COSI = QED with Dr. BIt’s absolutely remarkable that, despite the pandemic, the creative teams at WOSU and COSI have come together to produce a brand-new weekly science series on WOSU TV! QED with Dr. B – starring COSI CEO Dr. Frederic Bertley (a.k.a. “Dr. B”) – explores and explains the latest in scientific breakthroughs with stories captured right here in Central Ohio.

The partnership history of these two Columbus nonprofits dates to 2006 when WOSU opened television studios at COSI and the organizations developed the WOSU@COSI kids’ space. The kids’ space on the second floor of COSI is still popular with hands-on digital media activities and exhibits.

Now, we are thrilled to have built a production partnership with COSI to tap the expertise of Dr. Frederic Bertley, a science educator and immunologist who is brilliant at distilling complex scientific principles into concepts even I can understand. Dr. B has a joyful enthusiasm that makes working with him a blast!

Watch every Wednesday night at 7:30pm starting January 27 to improve your science literacy as Dr. B breaks down advances in

medicine, technology, the study of climate change and more.

Thank you to COSI and Dr. B for overcoming so much during the past year to work with our talented producers and videographers in creating this television series. QED with Dr. B joins WOSU’s other weekly series Columbus Neighborhoods, Broad & High, Columbus On The Record and In The Know.

There is no other time in recent history when it was more important to understand scientific advances and processes. Tune in to QED with Dr. B or watch online and let us know what you think!

Frederic Bertley, Ph.D. President and CEO, Center of Science and Industry (COSI)

Dr. Frederic Bertley is a scientist, scholar and evangelist for innovative thinking. After graduating from McGill University where he studied Physiology, Mathematics, the History of Science, and earned a Ph.D. in Immunology, Dr. B worked internationally in preventative medicine and basic vaccines in Haiti, The Sudan and the Canadian Arctic. He continued this focus by joining a vaccine research group at Harvard Medical School focusing on the development of DNA vaccines for HIV/AIDS. Dr. B’s background also includes collaboration on educational and science projects in Egypt, Paraguay, Senegal and the Caribbean. Prior to COSI, he was the SVP of Science and Education at the Franklin Institute.

Q&A with Dr. BQ: What does QED mean? Why is it the title of the new show?

A: For centuries since the Renaissance, mathematicians, physicists and philosophers would pen Q.E.D. at the end of their proofs. Q.E.D. is Latin for Quod Erat Demonstrandum, which roughly translates into “Quite Easily Demonstrated.” QED fits perfectly then as part of our show title because our primary goal is to have the audience easily and effectively understand cutting-edge science. In short, we want to “quite easily demonstrate” to the viewers that science is accessible, enlightening and also really cool.

Q: Why is science literacy so important to you?

A: Science – and its offspring, technology – are all around us, they impact our lives substantially. The more we know about science and technology, the better decisions we can make. For example, the more scientifically literate we are about the science of climate change, the better decisions we can make to lessen our impact on the planet.

Q: What do you hope our viewers will learn about scientists from QED with Dr. B?

A: Scientists are just like everyone else. They had the same wonky childhood. They have multiple interests and hobbies. They eat and drink the same foods as everyone else. And yes, they are very approachable. The only differentiator is that scientists have this insatiable passion to peer deep into a subject and try to best understand a truth about nature and our elegant universe. And no doubt about it, we all are better off because of it!

Q: Tell us something you’ve learned about making a brand-new television show?

A: Three things: One, it’s a lot of hard work coupled with a prescribed and calculated process. Two, it’s a fantastic fusion of creative energy and disciplined research. And three, that the WOSU team REALLY knows what they are doing!

Watch the new series QED with Dr. B Wednesdays at 7:30pm starting January 27 on WOSU TV.

QED with Dr. B is a new weekly half-hour TV series that explores how scientific discoveries impact our daily lives. Hosted by Dr. Frederic Bertley (“Dr. B”), president and CEO of COSI, QED with Dr. B talks one-on-one with the scientists, engineers and innovators who are redefining how we interact with our world. Here, it’s Dr. B’s turn to answer some questions and introduce you to this exciting new series coming to WOSU TV this month.

    QED with Dr. B | Wednesdays at 7:30pm | Starting January 27

QED with Dr. B is made possible through the generous support of:

Last January this column previewed 2020 by predicting, “The new year promises to be an extraordinary one.” We promised balanced coverage of the impeachment and campaign. Little did we know those stories would become subplots to the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice protests and incredible election drama. Let’s hope 2021 is as extraordinary for progress we make in overcoming COVID-19 and achieving racial justice. Here are some of the big stories we’re watching:

COVID-19. With coronavirus cases and hospitalizations surging at the end of 2020, health care professionals began administering vaccines aimed at ending the pandemic. 89.7 will continue to provide the latest news on COVID-19’s spread and the vaccine’s effectiveness. We’ll report on the impact the pandemic is having on schools, businesses and life in general. You can count on WOSU to put science and facts first.

The Biden Administration. America swears in a new president on Wednesday, January 20. 89.7 and NPR will provide live coverage of the historic transition of power which promises to be outside the norm. In the weeks and months following the oath, 89.7 will deliver thoughtful coverage of how President Biden takes on the pandemic, a struggling economy, and the many issues our nation faces.

89.7 FM NPR News can also be heard on our regional network stations on HD Radio as well as streaming online at wosu.org and on WOSU’s mobile App.

    Things We’re Watching in 2021

Legislative Redistricting. Following the 2020 census, Ohio lawmakers will re-draw Ohio’s congressional and state legislative districts. Ten years ago, Republicans drew some of the most gerrymandered districts in the country which greatly helped GOP candidates win and hold a super majority of seats. A new process is in place to encourage lawmakers to draw fairer districts. 89.7 will report on just how fair the map-making is.

The Unexpected. No doubt, something else will happen in 2021 that we cannot predict. When it does, you can count on 89.7 to be your source for factual, balanced reporting.

January Programming Highlights As 2021 gets underway, live performances are still problematic. However, Classical 101 and the Metropolitan Opera are taking that as an opportunity to revisit outstanding performances we think you’ll enjoy.

The Metropolitan Opera has an amazing archive of historic performances by some of the world’s greatest artists. This month, we’ll reach all the way back to 1961 for a performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore with Fausta Cleva conducting. The stellar cast includes a young Leontyne Price in her Met debut role as Leonora, with Franco Corelli as Manrico. That airs Saturday, January 23 at 1pm. It’s a must hear!

Met performances kick off with Satyagraha by Philip Glass on January 2. January 9, it’s The Barber of Seville featuring Joyce DiDonato, Lawrence Brownlee and Samuel Ramey. From earlier this year, not long before the shutdown, there’s Verdi’s La Traviata with Aleksandra Kurzak as Violetta,

airing January 16. And the Met month wraps up on January 30 with a 2011 performance of Gounod’s Faust, led by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

There are plans for a February “Listeners’ Choice” broadcast, so tune in on February 6 to see what listeners chose. You can see the entire Toll Brothers—Metropolitan Opera Saturday Matinee Broadcast Season at metopera.org. All broadcasts this season on Classical 101 begin at 1pm.

The Columbus Symphony broadcast season with host Christopher Purdy also kicks off in January, with nine performances slated for Sundays at 1pm. The series launches on January 3 with an irresistible program of music by Mozart, Beethoven and the Chevalier de St. Georges, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. Rossen Milanov conducts.

Milanov returns on January 10 with more Beethoven, and the Symphony No. 4 joins Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Lena Frank’s Elegia Andin. On January 17, Milanov is on the podium for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral,” along with a Mozart wind serenade and George Walker’s elegant Lyric for Strings.

American music is front and center on January 24 with selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and a performance of Paul Moravec’s celebrated Sanctuary Road.

It’s The Romantic Cello on January 30. Pablo Fernandez joins Milanov and the CSO for Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Music by Torres and Brahms is also on the program.
