July: Columbus Children’s Theatre

Columbus Neighborhoods: New Americans is the last segment to premiere in the second phase of the Emmy® award-winning documentary series and outreach project, Columbus Neighborhoods.

Immigrants built Columbus. In Columbus Neighborhoods: New Americans you will discover how the immigrant experience not only defined the character of this city during its foundation and early growth, but how immigrants now are adding to our culture, supporting our economy and reshaping the American dream.

But before the premiere of this compelling documentary, we want to hear from YOU. WOSU Public Media is hosting Columbus Neighborhoods: New Americans—“Share Your Heritage Day” on Saturday, July 18 from 11am–4pm at our studios at WOSU@COSI. This will be your chance to share the story of how you and your family arrived in Columbus. Are you proud of your Irish roots? Do you come from Appalachia? Are you Italian or Jewish or Russian? Did your ancestors fight in the Civil War? What part of history did your family witness?

If you’ve been here for generations, or are a recent arrival, we want to know about the pride you have in your heritage!

So join us for this chance to share your heritage. All of the stories will be recorded and so you may see yourself in Columbus Neighborhoods: New Americans when it premieres this fall on WOSU TV. For more information, please call 614.247.2675.

89.7 NPR News’ daily news interview show, All Sides with Ann Fisher, has a simple goal: to help you better understand the things you, your family and your friends are talking about.

Each day Ann and the All Sides production staff start with a simple question: What are people taking about? Once they have the answer, they swing into action to produce a show that explores that topic.

Events of a recent month perfectly illustrated that strategy and effort. On a Monday afternoon, Caitlyn Jenner’s profile in Vanity Fair re-ignited the conversation about transgender people. All Sides devoted the next day’s program to the Bruce Jenner transition, interviewing Columbus members of the transgender community. The show brought a national phenomenon home to central Ohio listeners.

Also that same week, a Columbus Dispatch investigation shined a spotlight on scores of Ohio dams in danger of failing. All Sides listeners heard from one of The Dispatch reporters, a dam expert and a man who owns property on a partially drained lake with a deteriorating dam.

As that show aired, The Columbus Dispatch announced it planned to sell the newspaper, ending a century-long period of family ownership. The story shook the city and left many with unanswered questions. The next morning, All Sides interviewed national and local newspaper industry experts who profiled The Dispatch’s new owners and explained what the change might mean to local journalism and the Columbus community.

For the listener, it’s easy to hear these programs—you just turn on the radio. But for the All Sides staff, keeping up with rapidly changing developments presents a challenge and a few hours of stressful scrambling. First producers must scrap the show they had planned, reschedule guests for an alternate date and put aside what was likely hours of research. Then they start over; finding and booking new guests, conducting new research and compiling prep materials for Ann.

It’s not easy, but it’s what our listeners expect. When a big story breaks, they ask, “I wonder what Ann Fisher and her guests have to say about it?” When they turn on the radio, they expect her to be talking about it. And Ann usually is.

All Sides with Ann Fisher airs weekdays from 10am to noon on 89.7 NPR News. You can listen to the show anytime at wosu.org/allsides and through the WOSU Public Media Mobile App.
