Preface Data presented in the Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) are collected and published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to fulfill data collection and dissemination responsibilities as specified in the Federal Energy Administration Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-275), as amended. The Quarterly Coal Report (QCR) presents U.S. coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, stocks, and refined coal data. In addition, the QCR offers U.S. coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports data. The first quarter 2014 QCR includes detailed quarterly coal data for January – March 2014 and aggregated quarterly historical coal data for 2008 through first quarter 2014. All data for 2012 and prior years are final. All data for 2013 and 2014 are preliminary.

1 Includes refuse recovery.

2 Reported as of the last day of the quarter.

3 'Losses and Unaccounted For' is calculated as production plus imports plus waste coal supplied minus the change in producer and distributor stocks minus consumption minus exports minus the change in

consumer stocks.

* Estimated.

Note: Beginning with 1999, the first three quarters of Producer and Distributor Stocks data for each year are estimated. Total may not equal sum of components because of independent rounding.

1 The electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) comprises electricity-only and combined-heat-and-power (CHP) plants whose primary business is to sell electricity or electricity

and heat to the public (i.e. NAICS 22 plants). The reported coal consumption is the total for producing electricity and useful thermal output.

2 Industrial combined-heat-and-power (CHP) and a small number of industrial electricity-only plants. The reported coal consumption is the total for producing electricity and useful thermal output.

3 All industrial sector fuel use other than in 'Coke Plants' and 'Industrial CHP.'

4 Includes commercial combined-heat-and-power (CHP) and a small number of commercial electricity-only plants, such as hospitals and universities. The reported coal consumption is the total for producing

electricity and useful thermal output.

5 All commercial sector fuel use other than that in 'Commercial CHP.' Excludes residential use.

Note: Total may not equal sum of components because of independent rounding.

1 The electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers) comprises electricity-only and combined-heat-and-power (CHP) plants whose primary business is to sell electricity, or electricity

and heat, to the public (i.e. NAICS 22 plants).

2 Manufacturing plants only.

* Estimated.

Note: Beginning in 1999, the first three quarters of each year's data for Coal Producers and Distributors are estimated. Electric power sector stocks include anthracite, bituminous coal, sub-bituminous coal, and

lignite, and exclude waste coal. Total may not equal sum of components because of independent rounding.
