Q3 – What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why

Production companies

A production company is a group of people that helps to make a film. They help with scripting, casting scheduling and most importantly budgeting. The company will watch the process from plans to the final product of a film. They are in charge of finding a director and most of the cast. As well as this, they are responsible for anything that goes wrong for example, injuries or property damage. Each production company will focus on a different genre for example, Lionsgate specialise in action thrillers and thriller in general.

Distribution

In all production companies there are distributors. A distributor is someone that delivers your product into stores around the world for audiences to see. They decided between them where and when the film will be shown for example, in cinemas. As well as this, they are in charge of promoting the product weather it be through television or posters.

Firstly, the distributors discuss how many copies they want to distribute. They then send the film to some buyers such as cinema owners and then goes on to cinemas just before release. After the public have seen it, it gets sent back to the distributers and a price for purchase is agreed.

Our production company

The name of our production company is called Cadavereel Studios. The production company logo is shown on the right. To help us come up with the ide about our production logo, we researched some other production companies and their logos to see what had already been created. In the end we took inspiration from Se7en’s camera style opening. This inspired us to create the logo shown above. I thought that it looked really effective and suited the genre and sub-genre of our thriller opening that we were going to create. We designed a logo that had elements of the camera style opening from Se7en but then edited it so that it looks original and our own.

Distributor

The distribution company that I think would be good for our thriller film would be Paramount Pictures. Paramount Pictures is a UK based film company that has produced some of the biggest films of the year. Some of these film include; Terminator: Genisys, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.

I have chosen Paramount Pictures because they are universally known and are one of the best production companies in the UK. As well as this, they are great at promotion so our thriller will be promoted well with Paramount Pictures. The theme and genre of our thriller suits Paramount Pictures as they specialize in creating this type of film and I think that we would work well together. Also, working with s large production company would help to promote our production company.

They have produced a wide range of films including the likes of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Noah, Hercules, Daddy’s home and World War Z. Audience members that watch Paramount Pictures films share interest in the same genre and style of movies that they watch. This genre is action thriller. The audience will be expecting action, fight scenes and a typical protagonist/antagonist narrative. When the audience see Paramount Pictures in the opening sequence of a film they will instantly link to other movies

Opening sequence

Opening sequence is extremely important to all of the production team that help to make the product. It should include:

Production Company Main actors Name of the film Written by Executive producer Directed by Costume designers Sound editor Make up designer Casting by

It may also include other staff that have helped in the production of the film. Other members of the team will be mentioned in the end credits. The main idea about an opening sequence or opening titles is to honour the main people that are involved.

As well as this, it can be used to attract the target audience for example, if people see their favourite actor then they might like the film more. Also they might know what to expect in terms of what happens in the film as they know the actor well. Likewise, with the production company. If someone sees a production company that they know and like, then they are likely to connect with it more and be more engaged with the film. In our opening sequence, we have honoured all of the people in the list above with credits of their names. We have also included our production company logo at the very start of the opening.
