Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is held each year in Australia to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer is still the deadliest women’s cancer. Every day in Australia four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and three will die from the disease.
Symptoms:
• Abdominal or pelvic pain
• Increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bloating
• Needing to urinate often or urgently
• Feeling full after eating a small amount
Increased Risk factors: Age - most common in women aged over 50, but can also affect women of all ages. Genetics & Family History - women who have two or more relatives from the same side of her family affected by ovarian, or ovarian and breast cancer can increase the risk. Child-bearing history - women who have not had children, unable to have children, never used oral contraceptives or have had children over the age of 30. Endometriosis - women who have suffered from this condition Lifestyle - smoking, overweight or eating a high fat diet can increase the risk. Hormonal - including early puberty (menstruating before 12) or late menopause (onset after 50).
Treatment: Treatment of ovarian cancer usually involves a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Less often, treatment may include radiotherapy. Treatment is best managed by a gynecological oncologist.

World Day of PrayerWorld Day of PrayerWorld Day of PrayerWorld Day of Prayer Friday, 2nd March
Since 1887, on or near the first Friday in March every year, millions of Christians have gathered world-wide to pray for the issues of family violence, child abuse, human trafficking and other forms of injustice. In 2018, that prayerful support will be directed at the 540,000 inhabitants of the Republic of Suriname, on the north-eastern coast of South America. Despite a history steeped in slavery and political coups, this tiny nation has achieved remarkable progress since its independence in 1975. Suriname enjoys multi-ethnicity and biodiversity, freedom of religion, free primary and secondary education and free medical care for children and seniors. But behind closed doors, family violence, abuse and neglect are ongoing issues. Children are particularly vulnerable, many growing up in orphanages or one-parent families. While education is free, there is no compulsory school attendance. Child labour in the form of street selling is common, but of far more serious concern is the fact that many children are labouring in the gold mines of Suriname.
The people of Suriname are reaching
out for our prayerful support. Surely we can spare a short time thinking of others in that small
country.
10.30 am is the time set aside on Friday, 2nd March and hosted this
year by the Anglican Church.

Bowls News Oh, it’s all happening! It’s just not all happening the way we had hoped and dreamed. Mid-Week Pennant We knew that the finals series would be different to the usual run of the mill seasonal play, but we didn’t compre-hend just how different. On Wednesday last week Division 1 Mid-week players fronted up to Kerang in the second semi-final which was played at Barham Services. We were expecting a tough match but it turned out to be more of a challenge than we anticipated. The greens were changing pace as the temperature changed going from slick to quite slick. The bowls were running in and out of the shadows thrown by the tall surrounding trees. The humidity was steadily climbing and the nerves were a little strained – all factors that were constant for both teams. The major difference was that our opponents had had previous finals experience and they adapted to the conditions and the situation much quicker than we did. To put it bluntly, they out played us. When the heat rule was evoked with the temperatures topping 38° we were down on our knees - but not out. Twenty-one shots in arrears was looking pretty dire and we couldn’t seem to break the pattern of play. The call to resume play the following day did us no great favours as we forced into a situation whereby two players (Nola & Graham) were unable to play due to previously arranged appointments. Consequently replacement players (Jean & Lorraine F.) were called into action. They both played their roles superbly. After the completion of the last16 ends of play the 21 shot deficit had been reduced to just 9. Oh, but for a few more ends!! We may have been able to reel them in! Marg, Jean, Ian & Tony kept their opponents scoreless apart fro a desperate single shot on the last end. They went from 12-18 down to 18-19 down which was a wonderful turn around. Glenys, Kate, Jeanette and Bill pulled themselves up from the depths to finish 11 short – 24-35. They had started to redeem themselves the previous day after getting off to a very disastrous start (and we will not dare mention the 8 given on the very second end). They played a much steadier game and will no doubt put this one behind them and fare much better next time round. Marie S., Marie N., Brian and Lorraine F began the second session with the scores all tied up 19-19 after 19 ends of play.
They improved their game to increase their score to gain a three shot win 25-22. The overall tally left us 67-76 on the wrong side of the ledger. Hopefully, this hit-out will give as a better feel for finals play and we will come out better equipped to take on Cohuna Golf next week at Cohuna. Heads up folk, a Premiership is still quite do-able. We are hoping for a very happy Valentine’s Day. A very big thank you to those who came along to offer support. Your attend-ance was much appreciated (even if we did try to ignore you and focus on our game). Great joy and jubilation! Division 1 Midweek Pennant narrowly defeated Cohuna Golf by just 3 shots in a history making moment. Grand-final here we come!! Match to be played at Cohuna Golf against Kerang next Wednesday. 9.00 am start - Go Hill! Saturday Pennant With eight of our regular players missing in action it once again became a challenge for the Selectors to choose teams. However depleted as we were for numbers both Divisions equipped themselves very well against some top opponents. Division 1 were pitted against the top of the ladder team, Kerang and really challenged them for the win. Marie S., Ray, Kate (sub) & Bill went very close to defeating the rink Skippered by Ritchie Murray (22-24). Lionel, Kate, Jean & Lorraine were going even-stevens at 18 all after 22 ends but didn’t manage to score on the last three ends and finished18-17 down. Beau, Glenys, Nola & Graham found the going too tough and were beaten comprehensively 12- 32. On the whole, Kerang were too strong but the two rinks led by Lionel and Marie S., really gave them something to think about. Division 3 also contested strongly. With the full quota of three subs and still a player short they can be mightily proud of their efforts. Robyn (Skip), Rhonda (sub), Tony & George won 27-24. Allan F. (Skip), Wayne, Kath (sub), & Beth won 27-19 and earned themselves the Incentive Award. Lorraine, Marg (sub) & Rose had to play a member short and in doing so had 50 fewer bowls in play than their opponents. They lost 10 -37 but it was a mammoth ask and they were not disgraced. This week sees Division 1 host Barham Services who are still vying for a place in the final four, and Division 3 will take on Wakool. Both teams play at home. Duty Rink honours have been given to Division 1 – all players are asked to help out with the jobs to be done.
60 & Over The sizzling heat gave the chooks another chance to escape death row. The sixty and over guys could enjoyed the comfort of their own homes instead of battling it out in the heat.
Barefoot Bowls What a difference a week makes! One week it is so it’s enough to make your camp fire freeze; the next week it’s so hot the birds had to use pot holders to pull the worms out of the ground. Once again, the night got off to a prompt start with all bowlers doing a roll to get closest to the ditch. Perhaps the instructions should have included “without going into the ditch” as quite a few bowls were well over-paced. Georgie, however, was very clever and won the prize for getting nearest. Despite the heat the bbq cooked up by Allan and Robyn, along with the Kim’s was still a hot favourite. Second round winners were Donnie Stewart, Kelvin Matthews & Teagan Stewart (The Legendary Team) with Runners-Up Max Farrar, Joe Cauchi & Paul Walters. Elders Pairs Tournament: This Sunday 18th Feb is the day we hold our Any Combination Three Bowl Pairs Tournament. It is a 1:00pm start. All entries welcomed. Names should be placed on the board or given to Lionel. .

LIBRARY UPDATE: Date a Book: Last week the library hand-selected and wrapped some Valentine’s Day inspired books as a lucky dip for borrowers. Within 24 hours all the books were borrowed. This week we have all new mystery & crime books as well as new audio books. Any fiction books that haven’t been borrowed in the past 12 months have been returned to Bendigo and we expect three crates of new titles to be brought up here next week to replenish the shelves. I have requested a selection of Filipino books for both youth and adults to be stocked BE CONNECTED is a digital literacy programme designed to assist older Australians (over 50) to become comfortable using computers, smart phones and tablets to connect to family, community and the digital world. For some, it can be very overwhelming to begin the digital journey. Be Connected aims to reduce the anxiety and fear associated with learning basic computer skills and has a very clear and no-nonsense approach that removes the technical jargon and complexity that can be a block for people. Joan Harley is currently taking part in the programme: Q. What is your first impression? A. Excellent, very well written and easy to follow. Q What do you think people should know? A. Just come in and give it a go! Q. What surprised you about the programme? A. The thoroughness of the content. Q. Is it for complete beginners? A. Absolutely! Come in even if you don’t have a smart phone, tablet or computer. Q. As an older Australian, why would you want to Be Connected? A. It’s very handy. If you are with somebody in an emergency, such as an accident on the farm, you are able to use their smart phone to call an Ambulance or somebody else to get help. Also, it’s fun to do in secret and then surprise your grand-children by emailing them or posting on their Facebook timeline! If you, or somebody you know could benefit from the Be Connected programme, call or drop into the house and we can chat about how it could make a positive difference.
VOLUNTEER UPDATE: Please join me in welcoming our very first junior volunteer (and comedian), Andrew Knight, to the house. It’s only been a week, and he’s fitting in tremendously while generously giving one hour, 3 days a week to assist us. Please come in and welcome our new and valued team member. Q. Who are you? A. Andrew, I’m 16 and in year 10. Q. Your hobbies? A. No hobbies, but like gaming I guess Q. Favourite book/movie? A. Ghostbusters Q. Your strengths? A. Flexible (literally). Also, I can be awesome! Q. What are you most proud of? A. I can dislocate my shoulder. Q. Who inspires you? A. My valentine (no, Kylie. I wont tell you who it is) Q. What does the house offer for younger people? A. We are still thinking of ideas. Anyone can visit the house. I’ve heard that we may start a gaming group here Q. What skills have you learnt so far? A. To never mess with the children’s book section. It’s never in alphabetical order and hurts the brain. But that aside, the house just relaxes me for a while. Q. If you could make a difference to the world, what would it be? A. Every day to be made Taco Tuesday (where you wear a sombrero and just dance however you want) Q. What’s the one thing I would like people to know about you? A. I’m Andrew and welcome to the neighbourhood house!
