The Calla Lily is a traditional symbol of purity due to its smooth curves and stark white color. The Calla Christian Church mimics both the organic shapes and sense of purity. The program for this project called for a worship space, re-ception area, classrooms, and admin-istrative space..

Current Issues

Situate the school near the library and residential areas and adjacent to the park for access to sport fi elds.Locate civic facilities along access routes to public transportation. To ensure clean air, place civic spaces away from the industrial area.

Cluster residential along minor streets to safeguard pedestrians from automobile traffi c.Arrange residential spaces around shopping and culinary districts Provide direct access to green space for residents.

Allow high rise commercial to act as a buf fer between residential areas and the freeway.Cluster high rise commercial in one area so as not to impose on the residential areas.Position high rise commercial to capitalize on views of the bay.

Create a pedestrian friendly environment.Introduce green space and public gathering areas wherever possible.Widen sidewalks to insert green space on pedestrian pathways.Locate green space adjacent to proposed school site and along access routes to public transit.

The bus drop-of f includes staging for 2 busses and is conveniently located near special education classrooms.

The bus drop-of f area is separate from the parent drop-of f area and parking area to provide a safe exit for the students and reduce congestion.

Administrative offi ces are designed to control the main point of entry and circulation areas on campus to monitor visitors.

Vehicular access from two streets is provided to expand access and allow for reduced congestion.

The community room is in close proximity to the library to allow for public access to the space.

The community room is accessible by the public during time frames when access to the classroom is not available.

The delivery and trash pickup area is sepa-rated from the drop of f area, and designed to avoid having trucks circulate where students may be present.

School staf f is able to close the campus through the use of automated gates within a matter of minutes in a case of emergency.

The hardscape play area is located in the inte-rior of the school to provide a buf fer between the children and the street, and to provide admin-istrators with clear views of the play area.

The early elementary play yard is located adjacent to the kindergarten classrooms and separated from other school play areas for safety reasons.

Close Gallery The Close Gallery is a retail, living, and work space designed for Chuck Close, one of the most respected artists of our time. Close became a quadriplegic in 1988 and many believed he would never paint again. Close found, that with the right environment, he could continue his work. This space is inspired by Close’s art and designed to accommodate his special needs. The facade of the building is composed of concrete, steel and stained glass with a self portrait of Close imposed. The gallery is designed to display the maximum number of paintings while allowing viewers space to navigate. The studio is equipped with a rotating canvas and low storage to make the space workable for Close.
