Mahjong Tiles

Main Suits: There are three main suits of tiles numbering 1 to 9. There are four such tiles in a mahjong set.

Sticks (Bamboos)

ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE Beads (Or Balls, as some would call them)

ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE Characters (Literally, ten thousand to nineteen thousand in Chinese)

ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE Special Tiles: These tiles are used to pair up with the suits above in order to gain extra points. Wind Tiles (Corresponding to the seating order of East, South, West and North)

EAST SOUTH WEST NORTH (DONG) (NAM) (SAI) (BUG) Dragon Tiles (Red, Green and White): Having a three of a kind of these would earn you 1 extra point.

RED GREEN WHITE (ZHONG) (FAT) (BAAK)

Flower Tiles (Having one with a matching number to your seat would give you one extra point): (1-East, 2-South, 3-West, 4-North) Red Flowers Blue Flowers

1/East 2/South 3/West 4/North 1/East 2/South 3/West 4/North

TERMINOLOGY: CHOW (Sequences): A three-tile set of sequential numerical order, e.g.

PONG (Triplets): A three-tile set of the same tile, e.g.

KONG: Four of a kind. Declaring a kong allows you to draw one extra tile from the tail-end of the tile wall.

HOW TO WIN A GAME To win, you will need four sets of chows / pongs PLUS a pair (called the ‘eyes’). For example, below is a semi-pure hand with 9 of balls as eyes:

In most games of mahjong you will need a minimum of 3 points to win. How high you score will depend on the quality of your hand. Priority should be given to good scoring hands such as: PURE HAND (All tiles from same suit), SEMI-PURE (Mix of one main suit + Winds/Dragons) ALL PONGS (four pongs + pair of eyes)

Having three of a kind of these that match your seat or current round will give you an extra point, e.g.

At the start of the game, each player gets: 3 Reds (150pts / 50 pts each), 4 Yellows (40pts / 10pts each), 10 Green chips (10pts / 1 pt each). Starting the game: Decide who sits at the East end. The dealer rolls the three dices after the four walls are built. Count the starting tile wall based on total number on the dices. Start counting from the dealer (who rolled the dice), then shift ANTI-CLOCKWISE (East->South->West->North). (Numbers that indicate the wall on the dealer’s side: 5, 9, 13, 17) (Numbers that indicate the wall on the opposite side of dealer: 3, 7, 11, 15) From the starting wall, count up to the dice total number in the clockwise order (Starting from the right hand side of the player whose wall is the starting wall, going from right to left), then dealer can start picking tiles. For instance, rolling 13 = Start on dealer’s side, start picking tiles from the 5th leftmost tile on the wall) Each player picks FOUR tiles (two columns) at a time, going CLOCKWISE. After each player has picked twelve tiles (three rotations), the dealer (East) picks two tiles from the top, skipping one column. Each player picks one subsequent tile. If any player has flower tiles, they must be shown and replaced with tiles from the tail end of the walls. Again, dealer replenishes his flower tiles first, followed by South player, West, North etc.

Dealer discards the first tile to start the round.

Seating Arrangements

Scoring In Hong Kong style mahjong scoring is usually based on the “faan-laak” scoring system. Each winning hand is worth a number of “faan” (points), which is then converted into a payment amount based upon the payment table below. Winning hands, bonuses and extra penalties are explained further on the next pages.

• Win by a discarded tile: Discarder pays winner full points. • Win by self-pick tile: All player's pay half the value of the winner's hand.

How much each person has to pay: (the “faan-laak” table)

Faan (Points)

Player who discarded the winning tile

If game is won by self pick

3 4 2 per player (6 total)

4 8 4 per player (12 total)

5 12 6 per player (18 total)

6 16 8 per player (24 total)

7 24 12 per player (36 total)

8 32 16 per player (48 total)

9 48 24 per player (72 total)

10 64 32 per player (96 total)

Last five tiles to pick:

Obtaining discarded tiles:

CHOWS (Sequences) can only be obtained from your previous player. PONGS (3-of-a-kind) can be obtained from anyone. KONGS (4-of-a-kind) can be obtained from anyone or declare it at your turn. Replenish a tile from the tail-end of the wall. The set counts as a PONG. If two players wish to take a discarded tile and one of them is a PONG, then the player with the PONG takes precedence. If more than one player declare a WIN when someone discards a tile, the one closest to the discarding player takes precedence. You can win the game from any player’s discarded tile.

HOWEVER, if you have ignored a win by a discarded tile, you cannot declare a win if someone else throws the same tile later on (i.e. You must self-pick to win.)

Common Winning Hands, Bonuses and Penalties: Every winning hand has a base point (“faan”). Base points and bonus faan are accumulative; they are added to form the total winning score, which is used in payouts. Calculating your score – Checking base points Does your winning hand look like:

A mixed hand (Mix of tiles from different suits)

No points

A semi-pure hand (Mix of tiles from one suit and winds/dragon tiles)

Add 3 Faan (points)

A pure hand (All tiles are from the same main suit)

Add 7 Faan (points)

On top of the above, does your hand contain:

Mix of chows and pongs

No points

All chows (Every set is a sequence)

Add 1 Faan

All pongs (Every set is three of a kind)

Add 3 Faan

The combined score from above is your base score. You may add to it a number of extra bonus points – See Bonuses on the next page.
