DOLAN M. WILLIAMS, ESQ.Law Office of Dolan M. Williams Concord Law School Graduate, 2015

Dolan M. Williams earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Concord Law School at Purdue University Global in 2015. After earning his law degree, Williams worked for the Law Offices of Young, Minney & Corr, focusing his practice on representing public schools throughout California. In 2017, Williams left the firm to start his own law practice, The Law Office of Dolan M. Williams. He published two articles in 2018. He was featured in the San Diego Downtown News for his article “4 Steps Toward Planning Your Path to a New, Rewarding Career in the New Year” and was also published in the Times of San Diego for his article “Opinion: How to Balance Your Priorities to Pursue a Dream Career,” which reflected on his career change journey.

Today, Williams lives with his family in San Diego, California, where he continues his solo law practice in civil litigation, centering mainly on small businesses and their varying needs. He continues to support Purdue Global as an elected member of the Purdue University Alumni Board, and by volunteering his time to assist with prospective student webinars. Williams also served on the Concord Law School Advisory Council for the past 3 years.

In addition to his juris doctor degree from Concord Law School, Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northern Arizona University, as well as two master’s degrees: master’s in criminology from Arizona State University and master’s in education with a specialization in adult education and training from the University of Phoenix.

THE MACEThe mace was originally a medieval weapon that was carried by bishops of the church into battle as a protective device. After more than 900 years, a ceremonial mace continues to be designed in a shape similar to a club, commemorating its very early use.

In later times, the mace was carried by sergeants-at-arms who were bodyguards of kings and others of high rank. Both Richard I of England and Phillip II of France ordered their sergeant-at-arms to carry a ceremonial mace. Legislative bodies such as the English Parliament also adopted the ceremonial mace as part of the pomp and circumstance associated with opening the meeting of the body.

As universities developed during this same period, they too adopted the mace for use in academic processions. Today, the mace is carried by the Macebearer who leads the platform party, which includes the University Chancellor and other dignitaries, onto the stage for the graduation ceremony.

Throughout history, special craftsmen were presented with the task of decorating the mace so it carefully embodied the history, traditions, and symbols of the academic institution.

Military RecognitionMilitary graduates and veterans are announced at the ceremony. Before the ceremony, Purdue University Global’s challenge coin was offered to graduates who served in our armed forces, in honor of their academic achievements and their sacrifice for our country. The challenge coin is a tradition in the military which started following World War I. Initially, coins were awarded by commanders for above and beyond accomplishment. This tradition continues to be popular in both military and veteran culture.
